Executive Summary The snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is categorized as an ’Endangered Species’ in the IUCN Red Data Book and protected by the National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1973; thereby making it a priority species for conservation. This is the first study aiming at assessing status, distribution and conservation threat of snow leopard and its prey in Limi valley of Humla district and the first study to successfully capture a camera trap image of the species in the area. Snow Leopard Information Management System (SLIMS) technique (Jackson & Hunter, 1996) was followed with a sign survey. Based on the sign survey, camera trapping location were identified and one camera was placed in each grid for larger area coverage and confirming presence of snow leopard. Point count was used for estimating the abundance of prey in the valley. Similarly, structured questionnaires were used to collect information on livestock loss to snow leopard and related conservation threats. In total, 19 transect (average length = 616.5m) were walked covering a total length of 11.7 km. Snow leopard sign abundance of 12.89 ± 2.96 (mean ± SE) per km with scrapes abundance of 10.64 ± 2.50 (mean ± SE) per km was observed. Of the total signs, 82% were scrapes followed by 11% feces, 3% pugmark and 4% others (Rock scent/hair).

    Between China and Nepal: Trans-Himalayan Trade and the Second Life of Development in Upper Humla Martin Saxer, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich Abstract Upper Humla, an area in northwestern Nepal bordering the Tibet Autonomous Region, has lost much of its prosperity over the past five decades. The region’s recent history has been shaped by modernization efforts and development initiatives on both sides. However, the author argues that, contrary to the common conception that Communist reform in Tibet dismantled the traditional economic foundation of trade-based Himalayan livelihoods, different forces were at work in the case of upper Humla. Three benevolent development initiatives in public health, wildlife conservation, and community forestry triggered the decline. The “second lives” of successful development, rather than the side effects of modernist planning, are responsible for upper Humla’s current predicament. There was a queue in front of the public satellite phone in Halji, the largest village in the Limi Valley in the district of Humla. Among the crowd were two staff members of a Nepali NGO. They had traveled from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj; flown to Simikot, the district headquarters of Humla; and walked for seven days to reach the village. Saville April 2001 Preface This case study was written as a contribution to a project on ‘pro-poor tourism strategies.’ The pro-poor tourism project is collaborative research involving the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), the Centre for Responsible Tourism at the University of Greenwich (CRT), together with in-country case study collaborators. It is funded by the Economic and Social Research Unit (ESCOR) of the UK Department for International Development (DFID). The project reviewed the experience of pro-poor tourism strategies based on six commissioned case studies. These studies used a common methodology developed within this project. The case study work was undertaken mainly between September and December 2000. Findings have been synthesised into a research report and a policy briefing, while the 6 case studies are all available as Working Papers. Abstract The Humla Tibetan language [hut], spoken in the far northwest of Nepal, has received little scholarly attention. This report presents the results of sociolinguistic research conducted among the Tibetan- speaking communities in Humla District. The main goal of this research is to describe the primary dialect areas and investigate the relationships between them. Other goals are investigation of the ethnolinguistic identity, assessment of language vitality, and understanding of the desires for development of the communities. In 2012 and 2013, three fieldwork trips were undertaken for data collection. During these trips seven sociolinguistic tools were used. These were wordlists, informal interviews, knowledgeable insider questionnaires, Recorded Story Questions, observation schedule, and two participatory method tools, namely Dialect Mapping and Appreciative Inquiry. This research found that the different speech varieties among the Tibetan-speaking villages of Humla District should be seen as dialects of the same language. Four dialects are identified, namely: the Limi dialect (Til, Halji, and Jang), the Upper Humla dialect (from Yari to Yalbang), the Lower Humla dialect (from Kermi to Kholsi to Tanggin), and the Eastern Humla dialect (from Burangse to Dojam).
