Darkness Rises of Evanescence has many moods. Of course she’s goth. ARTIST IN TOWN Evanescence singer Amy Lee has had one helluva year, in all senses of the phrase. Her multi-platinum goth band scored a string of radio hits off their second album, “Fallen,” and the group recently won two Grammys for Best New Artist and Best New Rock Album, beating 50 Cent for the former.

But on top of handling the pressures of new-found fame, Lee has had to deal with the exit of her longtime friend and bandmate, gui- tarist , who abruptly left the band in October. “He wasn’t happy with things, and he didn’t enjoy [the band] anymore,” Lee said, speaking from St. Cloud, Minn. “It was bad enough that he left, but he gave us no warning.” Not that she’s bitter. Moody’s spot was filled by former Cold gui- tarist Terry Balsamo and then, well, two Grammys can help any- one’s mood. “We’ve been nominated for so many awards at dif- ferent ceremonies — but we usually lose!” she said with a self- deprecating laugh. “So the Grammys were a surprise, and it was a great experience, but we’re back on tour now and things are back to normal.” Their Boston show on Sunday will be the last stop of the tour. With some much-needed downtime coming up, Lee is looking for- ward to buying a house and catching up on sleep. “After I sleep for a solid two weeks I’ll be ready to get in front of the piano and start working on new songs for the next album,” she said. Lee is reluctant to guess what the new material will sound like, but it’s safe to say that even without Moody’s nu-metal guitar influ- ence, the group won’t be going soft. “Sometimes people assume that Ben brought the rock, and I was just the girl vocalist, but I love heavy stuff,” Lee says. “I like dense guitars and strings, and programming — so those will all be elements in the new stuff.” Travis Smith

Evanescence plays with Default and Atomship this Sunday, 6:30 p.m., at Aval- on (15 Lansdowne St.). MBTA: Green Line to Kenmore. Tickets are $30.25 and available online at nextticketing.com. The show is sold out.
