Three Maori theoretical approaches underpin the thesis: Kaupapa Maori; Mana Wahine, Maori Feminism; and Aitanga. Kaupapa Maori takes for granted being Maori; Maori language, te reo Maori; and tikanga, Maori cultural practices. Whakapapa, Maori descent lines and Pakeha genealogy connect with Maori/Pakeha identity. Mana Wahine, Maori Feminism, is about how Maori women live their lives and view their worlds. Aitanga relates to the distribution of power and Maori as active participants in social relationships. Eight decades of problematic, complex, multi-layered, multi-sited, multi-faceted life experiences of one Maori woman teacher are explored. Memories and events are presented through a metaphor of ‘play’ in a socially constructed milieu of power relationships, language and dialogic encounters reflected upon and analysed. Three main recurring themes of Whakapapa and Identity, Cultural Navigation and Cultural Flexibility, Resilience and Endurance, are woven into the thesis fabric. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Nga Mate, those who have passed on and who deserve particular mention for the wonderful memories that I treasure: My first grandson Michael Mouti Taylor (1 December 1988 – 17 June 2013), Te Atiawa iwi, Ngati Rahiri and Puketapu hapu, Bachelor of Physical Education, Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Partial) Otago, budding Physiotherapist, whose early years I was very fortunate to share. As a young man Michael later monitored my post-surgery exercise and swim programmes with the energy, wit, humour and exuberance of youth. He also wrote me proper letters about his university studies, student life style, sporting developments, future possibilities and news of family. My nephew, Peter Errol Karipi Ngatai, Te Atiawa and Ngati Mutunga Iwi, who designed my personal moko kauwae, woman’s chin tattoo, adorning the spine of my Master’s thesis. Peter also carved ‘Tokotoko’, my personal walking/talking stick, depicting his interpretation of my achievements along the pathways of my life. My very dear friend Ramai Hayward, for her inspiring telephone calls and notes of encouragement, but more importantly for unexpectedly producing, in the form of an old sepia photograph, the painting of my father’s whangai parent, foster mother, Harimate Epiha: ‘for all your achievements that have never been acknowledged dear’.1 My wonderful friend Joy Rakena, whom I met at Christchurch Teachers’ Training College, who shared her family with me, kept my feet on the ground, talked much common sense when I needed it and regularly visited my mother. My precious aunt, Ngapera Taupiri Teira, Aunty Pera, my father’s sister, who signed the application to the Maori Land Court to constitute the Ngahina Trust. The original Ngahina Trust families of Beneficial Owners and their descendants, who changed my retirement years in ways I had never ever envisaged. 1 Ramai Hayward, personal communication, 1994. iv My cousins, the late Te Akerama Manuka Taiaki and his sister, the late Wharemawhai Mina TimuTimu, for contributions to historical information, tenor of meetings, and guidance for my Maori language presentations. Paul Brunton, close friend and first Chartered Accountant for Ngahina Trust, who, under pressure of early Paraparaumu land sales, said, ‘Now hang on a minute. What can we save for the owners?’ Paul often commented on his interpretation of what he termed “historic dishonourable treatment’ by Pakeha towards the Ngahina Trust Maori Beneficial Owners. Bruce Mansell, Chairman Alpha Corporation, Coastlands Shopping Town Limited, Paraparaumu, and Ngahina Developments Limited, veteran of the Boardroom, who said, ‘I don’t know what is wrong with them, I don’t have a problem with you.’ I sat in meetings with Bruce for thirty years, always learning something new. John McKenzie, NZEI, greeting me with, ‘Happiness is Marie Taylor!’ The thirty close friends and relatives who passed away between June 2013 and November 2017, who also trod the highways and byways of life with me. Moe moe ra koutou. Kia ora mo to mahi me nga korero. Moe moe ra. Moe moe ra. Inevitably over eighty years, there are many others who have touched my life, engaging in both positive and negative learning experiences, and to whom I would also like to register my heartfelt and unreserved thanks. School Committees, teachers, parents and children at schools to which I was appointed, who participated in, and contributed to, the joy in learning that we shared throughout my forty years of growth as a teacher. The New Zealand Educational Institute, in particular Helen Anderson and Joh Cogle, for their friendship and enlightening experiences that broadened my learning as an adult. Our discussions in the fields of meeting procedures, teacher politics, v persistent questioning of government policies leading to educational change, and international travel to Switzerland were opportunities that contributed markedly to my growth. Most important are the management skills I learned and was able to transfer to the administration of the Ngahina Trust and the development of business relationships during my third age. The Beneficial Owners of Ngahina Trust, some travelling long distances, who regularly participate in the decision-making processes and activities of the Trust. The Directors of Coastlands ShoppingTown and Ngahina Developments Limited, who continue to guide Ngahina Trust through land retention and development projects on our Maori ancestral land, located in Paraparaumu on the Kapiti Coast of New Zealand. The women of the Arahina Branch Maori Women’s Welfare League, Dominion Executive, Regional Council, and members I encountered in the course of my membership and while in office, for the Maori intangibles they brought to my life. The members of the New Zealand Teacher Registration Board and the Auckland College of Education Council, with whom I sat through many years of meetings. My friends: Pam and Barry Darney, for information about early Waitara, copying of photographs and support; Natalie Horter (nee Rowe); Nan Lineham (nee Tamati); Betty Miege (nee Tate); Waiora Port; Joce Jesson; Maxine Stevenson; Terehia Brock; Gloria Culley; Jan Taylor; and Ellen Chan, for their encouragement and interest in my writing and general wellbeing.     A Survey of Recent New Zealand Writing TREVOR REEVES O achieve any depth or spread in an article attempt• ing to cover the whole gamut of New Zealand writing * must be deemed to be a New Zealand madman's dream, but I wonder if it would be so difficult for people overseas, particularly in other parts of the Commonwealth. It would appear to them, perhaps, that two or three rather good poets have emerged from these islands. So good, in fact, that their appearance in any anthology of Common• wealth poetry would make for a matter of rather pleasurable comment and would certainly not lower the general stand• ard of the book. I'll come back to these two or three poets presently, but let us first consider the question of New Zealand's prose writers. Ah yes, we have, or had, Kath• erine Mansfield, who died exactly fifty years ago. Her work is legendary — her Collected Stories (Constable) goes from reprint to reprint, and indeed, pirate printings are being shovelled off to the priting mills now that her fifty year copyright protection has run out. But Katherine Mansfield never was a "New Zealand writer" as such. She left early in the piece. But how did later writers fare, internationally speaking? It was Janet Frame who first wrote the long awaited "New Zealand Novel." Owls Do Cry was published in 1957. A rather cruel but incisive novel, about herself (everyone has one good novel in them), it centred on her own childhood experiences in Oamaru, a small town eighty miles north of Dunedin -— a town in which rough farmers drove sheep-shit-smelling American V-8 jalopies inexpertly down the main drag — where the local "bikies" as they are now called, grouped in vociferous RECENT NEW ZEALAND WRITING 17 bunches outside the corner milk bar.

    2.2 THE MONARCHY Noel Cox and Raymond Miller A maturing sense of nationhood has caused some to question the continuing relevance of the monarchy in New Zealand. However, it was not until the then prime minister personally endorsed the idea of a republic in 1994 that the issue aroused any significant public interest or debate. Drawing on the campaign for a republic in Australia, Jim Bolger proposed a referendum in New Zealand and suggested that the turn of the century was an appropriate time symbolically for this country to break its remaining constitutional ties with Britain. Far from underestimating the difficulty of his task, he readily conceded that 'I have picked no sentiment in New Zealand that New Zealanders would want to declare themselves a republic'. 1 This view was reinforced by national survey and public opinion poll data, all of which showed strong public support for the monarchy. Nor has the restrained advocacy for a republic from Helen Clark, prime minister from 1999, done much to change this. Public sentiment notwithstanding, a number of commentators have speculated that a New Zealand republic is inevitable and that any move in that direction by Australia would have a dramatic influence on public opinion in New Zealand. Australia's decision in a national referendum in 1999 to retain the monarchy raises the question of what effect, if any, that decision had on opinion on this side of the Tasman. In this chapter we will discuss the nature of the monarchy in New Zealand, focusing on the changing role and influence of the Queen's representative, the governor-general, together with an examination of some of the factors that might have an influence on New Zealand becoming a republic.

    Oral history news Elayne retires from MOTAT Elayne Robertson worked with great NOHANZ enthusiasm at MOTAT in various Newsletter roles from 2001 to 2005. She found her metier in the Walsh Memorial Library and worked with the tenacity Volume 19, number 3 of a bloodhound researching the MOTAT photograph collection and SEPTEMBER 2005 cataloguing it. But really Elayne’s lasting achievement was the establishment EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE of the MOTAT Oral History section. In 2002 the new MOTAT Director, President: Jeremy Hubbard, took advice from Lesley Hall the existing staff and volunteers and approached Elayne. Executive Committee: Emma Dewson His faith was very well rewarded Linda Evans when Elayne immediately drew up Gillian Headifen equipment lists, plans, and budgets. Megan Hutching She recruited volunteers to carry out Alison Laurie interviews and brought all the Rachel Morley resources together, organised Rachael Selby training for us in interview Anne Thorpe techniques, machine operation and project planning.     77 MĀORI LAND AND LAND TENURE IN NEW ZEALAND: 150 YEARS OF THE MĀORI LAND COURT R P Boast* This is a general historical survey of New Zealand's Native/Māori Land Court written for those without a specialist background in Māori land law or New Zealand legal history. The Court was established in its present form in 1865, and is still in operation today as the Māori Land Court. This Court is one of the most important judicial institutions in New Zealand and is the subject of an extensive literature, nearly all of it very critical. There have been many changes to Māori land law in New Zealand since 1865, but the Māori Land Court, responsible for investigating titles, partitioning land blocks, and various other functions (some of which have later been transferred to other bodies) has always been a central part of the Māori land system. The article assesses the extent to which shifts in ideologies relating to land tenure, indigenous cultures, and customary law affected the development of the law in New Zealand. The article concludes with a brief discussion of the current Māori Land Bill, which had as one of its main goals a significant reduction of the powers of the Māori Land Court. Recent political developments in New Zealand, to some extent caused by the government's and the New Zealand Māori Party's support for the 2017 Bill, have meant that the Bill will not be enacted in its 2017 form. Current developments show once again the importance of Māori land issues in New Zealand political life.

Judith Dell Panny 1991. i ABSTRACT This investigation considers some aspects of Janet Frame's fiction that have hitherto remained obscure. The study includes the eleven novels and the extended story "Snowman, Snowman". Answers to questions raised by the texts have been found within the works themselves by examining the significance of reiterated and contrasting motifs, and by exploring the most literal as well as the figurative meanings of the language. The study will disclose the deliberate patterning of Frame's work. It will be found that nine of the innovative and cryptic fictions are allegories. They belong within a genre that has emerged with fresh vigour in the second half of this century. All twelve works include allegorical features. Allegory provides access to much of Frame's irony, to hidden pathos and humour, and to some of the most significant questions raised by her work. By exposing the inhumanity of our age, Frame prompts questioning and reassessment of the goals and values of a materialist culture. Like all writers of allegory, she focuses upon the magic of language as the bearer of truth as well as the vehicle of deception.

She currently teaches Creative Writing in the English Department, and her latest book of poetry Tender Machines has recently been published by University of Otago Press. Hone Tuwhare New Zealand's most distinguished Māori poet, and a former Burns Fellow at Otago. Hone Tuwhare is the people’s poet. He was loved and cher ished by New Zealan ders from all walks of life. A picture of Hone's poem in Krakow is featured below. David Eggleton David is editor of pre-eminent NZ literary journal Landfall, published by University of Otago Press. Landfall is New Zealand's foremost and longest-running arts and literary journal, showcasing new fiction and poetry, as well as biographical and critical essays, and cultural commentary. He recently won the 2015 Janet Frame Literary Trust Award for Poetry. A picture of David's poem in Krakow is featured below. Janet Frame Janet Frame is New Zealand’s most distinguished writer. Among her numerous honours, Frame is a Member of the Order of New Zealand, a Nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature and an Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. She was among ten of New Zealand’s greatest living artists named as Arts Foundation of New Zealand Icon Artists in 2003.
