Dear Friends: s you know, both myself and Bishop Gregory were in Lebanon Afor approximately three weeks in June to attend the Annual Maronite Bishops’ Synod and various meetings. It was a great experience for both, receiving and sharing ideas with other Maronite Bishops from around the world. On my return, as the plane flew over American soil, I began to reflect on the various countries which we passed over. My heart went out to the people of Syria, Iraq and Jordan in the Middle East where there is persecution and heartache. I realized more and more, in that part of the world where Jesus began His teachings, the people endure much danger and are even losing the faith that has been instilled in them from Apostolic times. This is due to the environment in which they live. Except for Lebanon, there is no freedom, no liberty, no justice for all, as we enjoy in this great country. I begin to ask, do our people appreciate what we have in this great land? Yes, we are not perfect, but we must remind our immigrants and natural citizens alike, that despite our defects, where in the world would you find the freedom that we have in this United States of America? Let us thank God for his goodness to all of us for we are able to live in the land of the " FREE and the HOME of the BRAVE." During this time of the year as we celebrate the Fourth of July, let us thank God for all those who continue to work and sacrifice to make this the greatest country in the world.

February 10, 2009 The Honorable Barack Obama President of the United States of America 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. President: In early December, as half of the world’s governments signed the Convention on Cluster Munitions in Oslo, a spokeswoman for your Transition Team said that you would “carefully review the new treaty and work closely [with] our friends and allies to ensure that the United States is doing everything feasible to promote protection of civilians.” We welcomed this statement. We write now to urge you to launch a thorough review within the next six months of past U.S. policy decisions to stand outside the treaty banning cluster munitions, as well as the treaty banning anti‐personnel landmines. We expect that such a review will give appropriate weight to humanitarian and diplomatic concerns, as well as to U.S. military interests. The closest allies of the United States negotiated the Convention on Cluster Munitions based on their conclusion that these indiscriminate and unreliable weapons pose an unacceptable threat to civilian populations during and long after combat operations have ceased—in much the same way as do landmines. British Foreign Minister David Miliband, representing the world’s third largest user of cluster munitions in the past decade, asked states at the signing conference to “tell those not here in Oslo that the world has changed ... that a new norm has been created.” He went on to say: “Our global community must continually keep challenging itself about the way it behaves.

In recent times, to keep us on the path of light and good order, the Holy See has given us the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and having taken these into consideration, the Maronite Church has given us a code of Maronite Particular Law. For the sake of clarity, uniformity, and impartiality, the Statutes of the Eparchy of Saint Maron of Brooklyn have been formulated to guide the clergy, religious, and laity, in our Eparchial mission of sanctifying, teaching, and governing the Christian faithful in our Eparchy. These Statutes have been revised and reformulated based upon the precepts of the Holy Scriptures, and the norms established by the Holy See, the Maronite Church, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and prior Eparchial legislation. Also considered, were the customs of our Church in the United Sates and, perhaps most importantly, years of real pastoral experience.     The Maronite Catholic Church THE CATHOLIC CHURCH Before He suffered His passion and death, Jesus prayed that his followers would be known by their love (John 13:35). “See how they love one another,” the early Church Father, Tertullian, heard it said of the first Christians. Today, the Gospel of Christ has reached the four corners of the world. Christians went forth from Jerusalem and encountered different traditions, cultures, customs and languages and the Church became a communion of Churches united in love with each other, looking to the See of Peter in Rome as the first among them. Jesus also prayed for unity, “that they all may be one” (John 17:21). Today there are Catholic, Orthodox and Protestants who pray and work for this desired unity. However, for Catho- lics united with the Pope in Rome, there is already an amazing unity even within the reality of cultural diversity. The Catholic Church, comprised of 21 Eastern Churches and 1 Western Church, is a communion of Churches, with the Pope as the visi- ble head, “gathered in the one spirit, breathing as though with two lungs - of the east and of the west - and burning with the love of Christ in one heart - having two ventricles.” (Sacri Canones; Pope John Paul II) One of the Eastern Catholic Churches is the Maronite Church. She has her own hierarchy composed of a Patriarch who is her father and head, and over fifty Bishops who shepherd the many Eparchies (Dioceses) in Lebanon, the Middle East and throughout the world. The Patriarch governs the Church in a synodal manner with his body of bishops as is customary in Eastern Churches.

    The Maronite Voice A Publication of the Maronite Eparchies in the USA Volume VI Issue No. VIII September 2010 The Holy Cross is the Ultimate Victory of Love Every Suffering, Even Death Itself, by the Power of God, Can Bring Something Good Into Our Lives Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: he Season of the Holy Cross is one of my favorites, for we are called to reflect on the ultimate victory of Love T and how this victory puts everything back into perspective. The Cross is not a symbol of resignation or defeat, Jesus is not a helpless victim. On the contrary, he endured man’s twin enemies of sin and death, and by a divine love and mercy so strong, and unfortunately so lacking in the world, he overcame victoriously all that oppresses us. The Season of the Cross, when Love triumphs over sin and death, comes at a time when we return to school, reapply ourselves after the summer months, and reflect on the Lord’s call to examine ourselves carefully, for “we know not the time or the hour of our Master’s return” (Matt 25:13). In this Season we focus on the Cross and see that our Heavenly Father would never have allowed suffering, sin or death to distort his creation unless he could richly bestow upon us, even in the midst of our trials, that love and mercy which makes “all things work together for the good of those who love him” (Rom 8:28). Thus, every suffering, even death itself, by the power of God, can bring something good into our lives, if only we allow it.
