Email: [email protected] Graham Oliver Department of Biodiversity and Systematic Biology, National Museum of Wales, Cathays Park, Cardiff CF10 3NP, Wales, United Kingdom Email: [email protected] (Corresponding author) ABSTRACT. – Seven species belonging to the genus Barbatia were collected from the Kungkrabaen Bay region of southeastern Thailand: B. foliata (Forsskål, 1775), B. decussata (Sowerby, 1833), B. trapezina (Lamarck, 1819), B. grayana Dunker, 1867, B. fusca (Bruguière, 1789), B. virescens (Reeve, 1844), and B. bistrigata (Dunker, 1866). Soft tissue colouration of the living animal is found to be a reliable taxonomic character and this is supported by the anatomical characters of the gut looping and anal papilla. Using ana- tomical characters to confi rm shell characters allowed a review of the foliata/decussata complex resulting in the recognition of three species: B. foliata, B. decussata and B. trapezina. A lectotype is selected for B. trapezina. Barbatia grayana is redescribed and a neotype is selected; it is considered not to be part of the foliata/decussata complex and most closely resembles B. multivillosa (Iredale, 1939). The nomenclature of all species is reviewed and the name B. fusca (Bruguière) is retained in preference over B. amygdalumtostum (Röding, 1798). Barbatia signata (Dunker, 1868), although not found during the workshop, is described as it has been confused with both B. -

Albuquerque, NM 87104 USA 2 The State Museum of Pennsylvania, Section of Paleontology and Geology, 300 North Street, Harrisburg, PA 17120-0024 USA 3 University of Pennsylvania, Department of Earth and Environmental Science, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6316 USA ABSTRACT This study provides a detailed osteological description of an isolated proximal caudal centrum and two nearly complete isolated metatarsals II and IV of the left foot of a gracile theropod dinosaur from the Lower Campanian of the Merchantville Formation in northern Delaware, USA. The caudal centrum and the metatarsals are referred to Tyrannosauroidea. The centrum is not well preserved, and thus not diagnostic; however, both metatarsals are diagnostic. The referral to Tyrannosauroidea is supported by several morphological features, including extensive surfaces on metatarsals II and IV for the articulation with metatarsal III, and a characteristic low, slightly convex muscle scar on metatarsal IV developed as a thin low ridge located on the posterior surface between the M. gastrocnemius pars lateralis insertion scar and the metatarsal III articular surface. This ridge has been previously interpreted as the plantar ridge, which is present in some derived Late Campanian tyrannosauroid taxa. Additionally, metatarsal IV has a deep medial notch for the accommodation of an“ L”– shaped proximal articulation of metatarsal III, and a“ U”– shaped proximal articular end. -

ABSTRACT•Geminate species are morphologically similar sister-species found on either side of the Isthmus of Panama. The existence of all geminates in the tropical Eastern Pacific ocean and the Caribbean Sea is most often explained by vicariance: closure of the Central American Seaway 3.1 to 3.5 Ma simultaneously isolated populations of species with amphi-American distributions. In this paper, we test the potential of morphological measurements for discriminating between Recent geminate species pairs from three genera (Area, Arcopsis, and Barbatia) in the bivalve family Arcidae and examine the prospects for distinguishing nominal species in the fossil record. Fourteen morphological variables were used to characterize shell shape and multivariate methods were used to discriminate between five Recent species pairs. Collection sites were also used as a priori groups for discrimination to describe patterns of intraspecific morphological variation and to evaluate differences among samples from different geographic regions. On average, 84 percent of specimens within geminate pairs are classified correctly following five separate discriminant analyses with nominal species as the grouping variable. Although all but one arcid species pair are discriminated with high statistical significance, some collection sites within species are highly morphologically distinct. -

In the past few years, the vertebrate faunas of several Appalachian sites have been described. One such locality, the Ellisdale site of the Cretaceous Marshalltown Forma- tion of New Jersey, has produced hundreds of remains assignable to dinosaurs, including those of hadrosauroids of several size classes, indeterminate ornithopods, indeterminate theropods, the teeth, cranial, and appendicular elements of dromaeosaurids, ornithomimosaurians, and tyrannosauroids, and an extensive microvertebrate assemblage. Taxonom ic studies of Bivalvia fro m the sandy facies of the K limont6w area (Holy Cross Mts.) of southern Poland indicate 99 species, 19 of which have previously not been reported from the Polish Miocene . Fo llowing species have previously not been known from the Miocen: Barbatia (Cafloarca) modioliformis and Montilora (M.) elegans (both Eocene), Callista (C.) sobrina (Oligocene), and Cerullia ovoides (Pliocenc). Pododesmus (Monia) squall/us and Gregariella corallio phaga a rc not iced for the first time in the fossil state. Twenty two species are revised and thei r taxon omic position are shifted.
