Mr Harwin to move— 1. That this House acknowledges with sadness the death of Sir John Leslie Carrick AC KCMG. 2. That this House recognises: (a) his service in the Australian Imperial Force during World War II, (b) his service to the people of New South Wales as a member of the Australian Senate from 1971-1987, (c) his service to the people of Australia as a Minister in the Fraser Government and the Leader of the Government in the Senate, (d) his service to the New South Wales education system, particularly arising from his work as Chair of the Committee of Review of NSW Schools, and (e) his service to the New South Wales Liberal Party as General Secretary from 1948 to 1971. 3. That this House offers its sincere condolences to the Carrick family. (Notice given 22 May 2018) 2067. Mr Shoebridge to move— 1. That this House note that: (a) on Monday 15 August 2016, a witness who gave his name and position as Mr Nicholas Peterson, Strategy and Legals Executive, United Land Councils, was sworn and gave evidence to General Purpose Standing Committee No. 6 as part of its Inquiry into Crown Lands, (b) a transcript of evidence was subsequently published referring to the witness by that name, (c) the same witness, under the name of Nicholas Petroulias, former assistant tax commissioner, was convicted of corrupt conduct and publishing documents without authorisation in 2008 in the decision in R (Cth) v Petroulias (No. 36) [2008] NSWSC 626, and (d) in the decision, Johnson J said that Mr Petroulias refused to acknowledge his ‘clear and gross wrongdoing’, despite his ‘clear impropriety and deceit during the period when the offences were committed and the investigatory aftermath’. 2. That Portfolio Committee No. 6 inquire into and report on the circumstances of the appearance of Mr Peterson before the Committee on 15 August 2016, including whether he appeared under a false name. (Notice given 12 April 2018—expires Notice Paper No. 168) 2213. Dr Faruqi to move— That this House notes that: (a) Boomerang Bags Inner West are celebrating one year of service to their community in May 2018 and they have sewn over 1000 bags and saved over 1km of fabric from being dumped in landfill, (b) there are over 680 Boomerang bag communities, each of which comprises volunteers sewing hand-made bags using fabric that would otherwise end up in landfill in order to reduce the use of single use plastic bags, and (c) that this House congratulates Boomerang Bags Inner West and recognises their significant impact on reducing plastic waste. (Notice given 17 May 2018—expires Notice Paper No. 174) 2217. Mr Searle to move— 1. That the report of the Independent Legal Arbiter, the Hon Keith Mason AC QC, dated 22 May 2018, on the disputed claim of privilege on documents relating to the order for papers regarding Sydney stadiums, along with all the submissions received by Mr Mason during his evaluation of the documents, be laid on the table by the Clerk. 2. That, on tabling, the report and submissions are authorised to be published. (Notice given 22 May 2018—expires Notice Paper No. 175) 2218. Mr Secord to move— 1. That this House expresses its disappointment that the Premier, the Honourable Gladys Berejiklian, MP and the Minister for the Arts, the Honourable Don Harwin, MLC continue to lose major arts events to other States including the glittering television awards, the Logies to Queensland and, as announced on 22 May, the renowned Helpman Awards to Victoria. 2. That this House calls on the Berejiklian Government to immediately put a stop to the cultural heist by other States which the industry fears will continue soon with the Australian premiere of “Hamilton” going to Victoria. (Notice given 22 May 2018—expires Notice Paper No. 175) 2219. Mr Shoebridge to move— 1. That this House notes that: (a) 26 May is National Sorry Day, a day to remember Australia’s shameful Stolen Generations policy, (b) despite the landmark “Bringing Them Home” report, and despite the Commonwealth Parliament’s apology to the Stolen Generations, Aboriginal children continue to be removed from their families at tragic rates, (c) there is now double the number of Aboriginal children in out-of-home care than there was at the time of the apology, and (d) Aboriginal children are ten times more likely to be removed from their families than non- Indigenous children, they are not ten times more likely to suffer abuse or neglect. 2. That this House recognises that “Sorry” is supposed to mean you don’t do it again. (Notice given 22 May 2018—expires Notice Paper No. 175) 2220. Mr Veitch to move— 1. That this House notes that Wednesday 23 May 2018 is Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW Day). 2. That this House acknowledges that WOW Day is a way for the community to show their support for SES volunteers Australia wide. 3. That this House acknowledges the courage and dedication of the NSW SES volunteers who are on the frontline in our communities each and every day of the year. 4. That this House commends and congratulates the SES volunteers for their outstanding efforts during times of severe weather and other catastrophic events which occur throughout New South Wales. (Notice given 22 May 2018—expires Notice Paper No. 175) 2221. Mrs Taylor to move— 1. That this House notes that: (a) 20 to 26 May 2018 marks Palliative Care Week 2018, (b) the theme of 2018 Palliative Care Week is “What Matters Most”, to encourage Australians to plan ahead for their end-of-life care, and (c) many events will be held throughout New South Wales this week to raise awareness and promote discussion about palliative care. 2. That this House acknowledges the importance of palliative care and end of life care. 3. That this House acknowledges the work of Palliative Care NSW in promoting palliative care and educating health professionals, volunteers and the community on palliative care, death and dying. As I said on 18 June on behalf of the Government in opposing the Hon. Mark Buttigieg's private member's bill, nobody wants to see a tragedy repeated like the one we saw at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital. As I undertook then, the Government has taken the steps necessary to provide a strong, robust licensing framework for those persons installing and working on medical gases in New South Wales. Mr STEPHEN BALI (Blacktown) (16:36): Parliamentary colleagues, distinguished guests and my dear family. I acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora nation and I pay my respects to elders past and present for their custodianship of the land on which we meet. I also acknowledge the Dharug people whose ancestors walked the Blacktown electorate. It is an incredible honour and a humbling experience to address this historic Chamber, the oldest Parliament of Australia, and to represent the needs and aspirations of the people of Blacktown. To do so as the son of a refugee says much about the equality and opportunity of Australian society. I recognise in the gallery the Ambassador to Hungary, His Excellency Dr Attila Gruber, and the Polish Consul General, Ms Regina Jurkowska. My family story has much in common with many of the constituents of Blacktown, and indeed with many members of this Chamber. My parents came to Australia by boat as refugees after the 1956 Hungarian communist revolution. My father, Karoly—known as Charlie—was 20 years old and learnt English on the boat. My mother, Eva, was a teenager accompanying her family who were settling in Melbourne. My father travelled the countryside, working wherever he got a job. They met and married in 1959 and moved to a house in Doonside, which was the home of my Aunt Gizi. When Gizi returned to Hungary my parents took over the mortgage on the fibro house, which is still my mother's home today.

    Children’s Festival Organisation Inc. 2017 - 2018 ANNUAL REPORT ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING REVESBY WORKERS’ CLUB AGM29 July 2018 President’s Report I would like to start by acknowledging the traditional owners of this land and pay my respects to the elders past and present. I would also like to acknowledge the presence of the Advisory Committee and the Management Committee today. I warmly welcome you all to our AGM in this beautiful environment, thanks to the generosity of Revesby Workers' Club. It is with much pleasure that I present the President’s report for the year ended 31st May 2018 at our Annual General Meeting here today. It has been another great year of achievements. First of all, our Nineteenth Children’s Festival in the City of Canterbury-Bankstown on the 17th of September last year attracted thousands of participants, thanks to the tireless efforts of all involved. Our fifth Children’s Festival in the City of Sydney was also a huge success. This festival was again proclaimed the biggest event in the “Living in Harmony Festival 2018” staged by the City of Sydney. The Children’s Festival in Sydney was something to treasure for the international students working with us and for the tourists arriving in Sydney at the International Passenger Terminal. Hopefully the experience will inspire the students to continue community service wherever they live, whether it’s in Australia or in their home countries. May I congratulate Mai, Mark, and Kana and their respective teams for their magnificent effort in making our various events big successes. The details of our two festivals held during the year 2017-2018 can be found in the reports of our Chairpersons.

    NSW LABOR POLITICAL BRIEFING Report from the Administrative Committee Meeting July 2015 1. VALE JOAN KIRNER Joan Kirner was born on 20 June 1938 in the Melbourne suburb of Essendon. She studied to become a teacher at university and later became President of the Victorian Federation of State School Parents’ Clubs. Joan joined the Australian Labor Party in 1978 and was elected to the Upper House of the Victorian Parliament in 1982. She became the Minister for Conservation, Forests and Land in 1985. In this role, Joan introduced the first Australian legislation which gave legal protection to rare species and was instrumental in the formation of the first ever Landcare groups. Joan was elected the Legislative Assembly in 1988 and subsequently became the Minister for Education. In this role, Joan introduced a new system of high school assessment – the Victorian Certificate of Education. Joan became the Deputy Premier of Victoria in 1988 and in 1990 she became the first female Premier of Victoria following John Cain’s resignation. The Labor Government was defeated at the 1992 Election and Joan retired from Parliament in 1994. She remained active in public affairs. Joan led the formation of EMILY’s List in Australia and was a leading figure in the introduction of the Party’s Affirmative Action rules at the 1994 National Conference. She has mentored many women Members of Parliament and candidates. Joan’s career in politics and her subsequent work has been recognised over the years. In 2001 she was awarded the Centenary Medal. In 2012 she was named a Companion of the Order of Australia for "eminent service to the Parliament of Victoria and to the community through conservation initiatives, contributions to gender equality, the development of education and training programs and the pursuit of civil rights and social inclusion." Joan was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and sadly passed away on 1 June 2015.
