It is one of the oldest educational trusts of India and has 27 institutes under its umbrella. HSNC University is the private cluster of University established in India by HSNC Board. It is the first University in the State and in India where the parent body of the State University is a charitable Trust. Dr. Niranjan Hiranandani is appointed as the first Provost of the HSNC University About College: Smt. CHM College with its forward-looking approach, committed faculty and enthusiastic student community belonging to every class of society, stands as a centre of diverse learning. The college is proud of its glorious history which defines its tradition of high values. It was established in 1965 with about 250 students and four departments has transformed into one of the largest colleges of University of Mumbai with an enrolment of more than 11000 students, 27 Under Graduate Departments, 7 Post Graduate Departments, 6 Research Centres and 2 UGC sponsored study Centres. The college has strong NCC and NSS units. The College Incubation Centre is established to create opportunities for learners to develop entrepreneurial culture so as to initiate their startups. Digital Language Laboratory with Orell Software is available for enhancing the language skills of the students. About Department: The Department of Microbiology was established in 1970 and its pioneering Research Department was established in the year 1977. The department offers the B.Sc., M.Sc. [Papers and Research] and the PhD degree Courses in Microbiology. The department has 07 faculties each with a caliber of academic excellence and research potential and is headed by Dr.Bela Nabar. The teachers are involved with Mumbai University as BOS member, syllabus committee member, paper setters, moderators and examiners. The department has 04 laboratories, an Instrumentation room, preparation room, and is on the second floor of the main college building with built up area of 3320 sq ft with exclusively. The department has permanent affiliation to Mumbai University and are allotted 20 research seats for MSc (by research) and PhD courses. The department has well equipped laboratory to cater to the students and teachers up to doctorate program and for the research projects. The department has an Animal Tissue Culture laboratory and facility for Molecular Biology experiments, Microbial Cultivation & Identification, Testing of potability of drinking water, Sound Monitoring and Microbiological assays for antibiotics & Vitamins potency determination. The department has Mumbai University approved 05 PhD and 07 MSc (Research) research guides, 25 PhD students and 48 MSc research students have completed degree from the department. The teachers have undertaken 03 Major (UGC, DBT, RGSTC), 36 Minor (14 [UGC] 22[UOM]) research projects .The department was involved with Municipal Corporation and NGO projects also. About 130 Publications in reputed journals and 250 Presentations has been done. Teachers & students have received several awards in Avishkar, DST-AWSAR, Innovation award, Best poster presentation, Best research paper award and Young scientist award and so on. The department coordinates the NAMP & SAMP project of the college which is sanctioned by Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). Concept note: The world is at a crossroad now as 2019 turned into 2020, COVID-19 pandemic came into the global spotlight. Lockdown and social distancing has undoubtedly welcomed a tremendous loss for the economy all over the globe. The effect of COVID-19 on economy of India has been most noticeably upsetting, the country is relied upon to lose over ₹32,000 crores (US$4.5 billion) consistently during the initial 21-days of complete lockdown. As economies around the globe are experiencing the effect of COVID-19, pharmaceutical organizations, contract research organizations and pathological testing laboratories are becoming the dominant focal point. During this unprecedented phase, pharmaceutical organizations are reacting to the quick difficulties emerging from disturbance in gracefully embracing the need to change business forms. To help us understand the job opportunities in various sectors, Department of Microbiology, Smt.CHM College, Ulhasnagar is organizing One day National webinar on “Post Pandemic Career Opportunities for Life Science Students” on 14th June 2020. The webinar focuses on COVID-19’s potential impact on global pharmaceutical and allied industrial market dynamics, the relative strength and prognosis for the developed and the emerging job opportunities to Life science graduates. Participation: The free webinar is intended for Faculty, Research Scholars, and Postgraduate and Undergraduate students.
