EDUCATION : THE NEW NORMAL – Dr. Indu Shahani Teachers & Students Adapt To This New Way Of Teaching Learning It was on March 11, 2020 that WHO declared COVID-19 as pandemic and on the same day ISDI & ISME with all its five schools of Design, Innovation, Business Management, Entrepreneurship, Communication, and Hospitality & Film Making School decided to go online. All our faculty went into a war zone and while grappling with the same challenges, which all educational institutions faced due to the lockdown i.e. they trained themselves overnight on how to leverage technology and break the physical and mental barriers for continuing the process of education in a digital format, over a sustained period. Our educational institutions developed a 'new normal' of Work from Home which for our educators has Training for Faculty however been how to Teach from Home and help students Learn from Home.

Digital education is providing both teachers and students new opportunities to teach and learn thereby ensuring greater participation in the overall learning process. The real test was to see how quickly the faculty and the administration adapted to adopting technology in the teaching learning process. An overwhelming support from parents coupled with the support from the Schools to staff who did not have the facilities at home, has led to what we can term as 'Digitality' - the New Normal in Education which required the educational institution to have the agility for digital transformation. New experiences and use of the best digital platforms has generated an unprecedented participation of students breaking all previous records of class attendance. The faculty engagement has also reached to a new high and a renewed enthusiasm is seen among the faculty to try out newer ways of teaching and assessing students.

Student Speak- Sahil Gandhi says, “My College has come up with a really innovative solution to an otherwise dire situation and I'm glad to be a part of this institution that always puts its students first and offers such a versatile learning experience.” Student Teacher Engagement The last three months (April – June 2020) have thrown up some very interesting statistics as far as the teaching learning at the five schools goes:

11700 lecture hours till date 2000 Students taking Online Classes each day 150 Unique Faculty 145 Classes per day 2.5 hours average per day teaching by a faculty 93% Average Class Attendance per day

Design Cannot be taught online- A Myth There was a general sense that design cannot be taught online. The faculty at ISDI- School of Design & Innovation have broken that myth and have established beyond any doubt, that Design can be taught through digital medium and all learning outcomes can be achieved just as they would be achieved in any physical classroom. To give an example here: Our Fashion Design Department used technology at its best to teach all aspects from Sketching, Cutting, Assembling, Constructing to Displaying through a virtual Ramp walk, the fashion apparels designed in the virtual classroom. The students of the Film School too under the guidance of faculty have created some outstanding class work using the digital software and technology

Student Speak - Zubaida Basrai says, “The digital learning sessions have really been exciting. It has taken the same learning experience a notch higher by making them even more interesting. Thank You for such enthusiastic and motivated faculty.” The new normal that we are currently experiencing in education has thrown up some great opportunity of industry interactions for the students and faculty at the five schools. Industry stalwarts who would have found it impossible to spare any time in the past have managed to spend a few hours engaging in Webinars and such interactions have opened up newer horizons for our students for career options Continued on page 3 July 2020 Amil Samachar

Student Speak -Shaili Jhaveri says, "The classes have allowed us students to enhance our time management skills along with helping us understand concepts in a more holistic manner. We feel at par with the world that is digitizing so quickly."

The new normal that we are currently experiencing in education has thrown up some great opportunity of industry interactions for the students and faculty at the five schools. Industry stalwarts who would have found it impossible to spare any time in the past have managed to spend a few hours engaging in Webinars and such interactions have opened up newer horizons for our students for career options. The virtual mode has also thrown the world open to renowned external faculty who are being invited from various countries such as UK, Russia, United States and Latin America and from prominent universities like Rutgers Business School for taking master classes for students. In a short span of 90 days, the five schools have seen close to 250 special sessions with Industry experts on myriad topics covering the most contemporary issues to guide the students into a bright future. To name a few of these webinars: ¢What is Design & Understanding of Design Galaxy by Harshvardhan Upadhaya | Lead Designer Samsung Designing for E-commerce and Career options by Sidddhartha Saini | Associate Director of Design for Anouk and Taavi @ Myntra.com ¢Future of fashion magazines in a post Covid-19 world by Meenakshi Iyer | Associate Editor Elle Magazine ¢Fire Side Chat - Benaisha Kharas & Yash Dongre - Image & Mental Health Consultant | TEDx Speaker |Fashion Style Expert ¢Rich Legacy of Family Business (4 generations of Bajaj Family) by Shekhar Bajaj | Chairman and MD, Bajaj Electrical Ltd. ¢COVID 19 - Will Pharma Be The White Knight by Ranjit Shahani | Former chairman and MD, Novartis Ltd. ¢Investing in Turbulent Times by Mr. Karan Bhagat | Founder, MD and CEO, IIFL Wealth and Asset Management ¢Modern Monetary Theory and Covidonomics by Dr. Farrokh Langdana | Director, EMBA & Professor of Economics, Rutgers Business School ¢Paying The Piper - A snapshot of western classical music by Mikel Toms | Resident conductor, Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI) ¢In conversation with Avani Davda on food retail post COVID 19 by Avani Davda | Advisor, Bain and Company New Records Set with New Normal in Education Student attendance has never seen greater heights. A study of the past months' records has shown a remarkable boost in student attendance on an average at 93% and on many days as high as 99%. Class participation has jumped up to 86.15% while Knowledge delivery has shown a rise to 95.66% The Way Ahead- A Hybrid Model Education is probably the only field after Healthcare that has seen such dramatic and a positive change against all odds during these times and a New Normal has set in that will never allow it to go back to its Traditional ways. Blended Learning will be the new method. Blended learning is the term which combines the in-classroom information with asynchronous tasks and content which is being consumed outside the classroom. Imagine sitting in a classroom connected with a two way audio and high definition video with a mixture of virtual components in it. It consists of a high level of engagement and interaction in the course, an effective way of learning, and the best environment to be in (flexibility). A beautiful future awaits the world of education where the best advantages of both Traditional and Digital modes would be combined to create a Hybrid Model and Blended Learning is here to stay!

OVERTAKING COVID... With new structures in place, it becomes imperative to adapt to the challenging times. 10 things to keep in mind while taking a virtual class

By Dr. Akhil Shahani, Managing Director, The Shahani Group

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected the education sector adversely, with a sudden shift in teaching pedagogies due to the shutting down of schools and colleges. Students, teachers and parents have had to relearn and readjust with the changing times. Over the last one month, 1.38 billion students across 138 countries have been forced to adapt to online learning, this has altered the mind set of students and teachers. With a sudden shift to digital classrooms, teachers have to go an extra mile to ensure that students continue to learn the quality of education is not hampered. Teachers and educators can keep in mind the following points to make a virtual classroom a success. Access and connectivity The most important thing when taking a virtual class is to ensure that one has access to a high-speed bandwidth connection for a favourable experience. It is also important to test all the tools and get well acquainted with the platform that you intend to use to understand it's working. Keep students informed It is imperative that a clear communication is established with students regarding the schedule of the class to ensure maximum attendance and preparedness. The access details and instructions should also be sent well in advance so that students can prepare for the class and manage their schedule accordingly. Interact with the students A virtual classroom is very different from a physical one, and students tend to lose attention easily if the class is not engaging enough. Most teachers run presentations or indulge in monologues which may be grave mistakes as they tend to wear the student out. Teachers should instead adapt a 'flipped classroom' approach, to increase student engagement and active learning. In a flipped classroom, students watch online lectures and collaborate together in online discussions. They carry out research at home in order to engage in concepts in the classroom under the supervision of a mentor. Communicate effectively Communication is key, especially in a virtual classroom where a teacher is not physically present. Teachers need to ensure that the course material is effectively communicated to students. They need to constantly ask students whether or not a topic is understood and encourage them to ask questions. General rules regarding the class should also be set down with students with clarity. Availability It is important to be available for students throughout the course of the lecture. It is also advisable to regularly check the course and make updates to presentations and notes to keep the course upto date. It is important to follow the established course schedule. Make sessions engaging The best way to tackle with a student's limited attention span,is to grab their attention with an interesting hook. A hook could be an anecdote or a scene from a movie or sitcom, or even a chapter or quote from a book at the beginning of the lecture that is related to the topic of the lecture. Research shows that students can lose 20% of their attention if teachers for more than 2 minutes. Hence, it is recommended to keep the lectures short, informative and interesting. Use video conferencing tools While many platforms provide the option keep the video switched off, while still being a part of a class, it is advisable to encourage students to keep their video on at all times. Through this the teacher can access the student better in order to make sure he/ she are attentive, and connect with them by asking questions and establishing eye contact. Small class size In a virtual classroom, it is always advisable to limit the number of students participating to 30. By doing so, teachers will be able to take shorter and more sessions, as well as interact with each and every student who has joined the class. Recording a class For teachers that may have to resort to recording lectures, it is important to follow a few tips to ensure quality learning. The clip should be rehearsed before recording. The audio/video should be recorded in a closed room sans background noise and in a well-lit and bright room to avoid a grainy, unclear picture or voice. Classroom Discipline To maintain discipline in a classroom, a coordinator should be assigned during each session. The coordinator can assist the teacher in ensuring a smooth operation of the lecture and also help assess student behaviour and check that discipline is maintained throughout the session. MOVING FORWARD.... THE ONLINE EDUCATION Faculty Development Program – FDP v3

On 24th& 25th June, 2020, Smt. MMK College of HSNC Board and North Storm Academy jointly organized Faculty Development Program - FDP v3. The topic was Live Online Teaching and Classroom Management Tool. The program was organized through Webinar. As per the google record, this program was witnessed by 29000 viewers. Mr. Hitesh Motwani, Director, North Storm Academy and Alumni of MMK College, presented his views on the topic. Dr. K.H. Mansukhani, President, HSNC Board, was Chief Guest at the Program. He delivered inspiring words to the young faculty. Extract of Speech of Dr. K.H. Mansukhani: "Greetings to our MKK Principal Dr Kishore Peshorianad our Alumni Dr. Hitesh Motwani and teachers and special warm welcome to our HSNC family . Let me begin with quote of ALVIN TOFFLER" The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn" . This quote is from the Book "Future Shock" of Dr. Toffler, written in 1970. These words are true and we have entered most challenging years of our lives. The last decade has been a test of our ability to embrace change, adapt, and advance. Let's look back at the last ten years. The present nature of mobile phones, access to fast internet, adoption of technology and the influence of social media have changed the game. The Covid 19 Crisis is a Good Time to Reflect the Way We Learn. There are many industries catering to change management and learning and our alumni of MMK Dr. Hitesh Motwani is leading the development. An essential skill for the next decade will be the ability to view change not as a challenge, but as an opportunity to grow and innovate. The change leaves us with two options - to act or to be acted on. Today, learning to navigate and adapt to change is not just a survival tactic, it's the only way to thrive. So, what does a Teacher in this environment look like? Teacher will be committed to a proactive and persistent pursuit of excellence - through unlearning, relearning, and learning. I am proud that our Board which is one of the biggest board in Mumbai University having 14 colleges spread across , Bandra and Ulhasnagar , educating 45000 students, has taken the challenge. On 11th of this month, our Board launched a HSNC University. The HSNC University is the First Minority Private CLUSTER University in India. So Lockdown has unlocked by us. Your ability to adapt to change will make crucial difference where you find yourself in coming five years. To quote Mr Darwin: "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change." I had never imagined that in teaching class rooms would be google class rooms. Intelligence will be measured through artificial intelligence. People would be replaced by robots.

But let me tell you the only thing that will survive through generations will be HUMANITY. BE HUMAN and above all be a Proud INDIAN.

I welcome you all once again and wish you all the very best in your lives.

JAI HIND !!! JAI MAHARASTRA!!! JAI JHULELAL!!!"

SAGE Foundation receives INR 17 croregrant from J.P. Morgan for upskilling of economically weak/challenged students

Aims to train and upskill 4,800 students for the BFSI sector with evolved pedagogy to meet the needs of employers duringthe economic slowdown

Mumbai, April 2020: Shahani Academic & Global Empowerment Foundation (SAGE), a non-profit trust focused on skills training, has received a grant of INR 17 crores from J.P. Morgan to help train 4,800 economically disadvantaged graduates in banking jobs, with a focus on upskilling. The funds will be utilised to impart training through a revised pedagogical method that will use state of the art technology and innovative concepts, with an aim to meet the evolving needs of employers amidst the economic slowdown.

The Covid-19 pandemic has transformed functioning in every industry, and the BFSI sector will see a faster and more widespread shift to digitalisation as a result of the crisis. This will create a demand for individuals with specific skills and talents along with a practical knowledge of the industry, to meet the changing demands of the sector. The Shahani Group will adopt innovative teaching methods to provide job skill specific training to these underprivileged youth, to enable them to obtain entry level white-collar jobs in the BFSI sector. This will be achieved through a blended-learning model that develops the students' communication, sales and problem-solving skills while providing them with domain knowledge. The Foundation will collaborate with its training arm Smart Institute Pvt. Ltd for skills training.

Akhil Shahani, Managing Director, Thadomal Shahani Group, said, "In light of the increased demand for job-ready professionals with detailed industry knowledge, it is imperative that institutions alter their approach to make students employable and relevant, especially in view on the current economic scenario. J.P. Morgan is one of the leading companies in the financial sector, and receiving this grant from such a prominent institution has truly uplifted our resolve to ensure a change in the education sector. The fund will facilitate our goal of helping students reach their full potential and find jobs in the banking sector, with the apt skill set."

Maneesha Chadha, Head of CSR for India, J.P. Morgan, said "We have observed that businesses across sectors are facing challenges in finding and employing skilled talent. Through this program, we aim to empower underprivileged youth through education andtraining, and make use of this opportunity by acquiring the right training for the right skills that are needed to build careers. Moreover, SAGE Foundation's credibility and repute is beyond reproach, and we look forward to high-yield results"

Every year thousands of fresh graduates look for employment in the financial sector, but there is often a gap between educational achievements and practical requirements. Lack of skills to secure a good job is one of the biggest barriers to economic opportunity. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the BFSI sector is set to experience a technological wave, with the advent of machine learning, data analytics, artificial intelligence and mobile banking. Hence, it is imperative to bridge the gap between employee skills and employer needs.
