    CHAPTER 7 A TALE OF FAITH AND LOVE: RELIGIOUS ENTHUSIASM AND NATURAL AFFECTION IN RICHARD GRAVES’ THE SPIRITUAL QUIXOTE Religious Nonconformism: Methodism as Quixotism In his 1905 talk, “Tercentenary of Don Quixote: Cervantes in England”, delivered at the British Academy, Fitzmaurice-Kelly affirms that “The Spiritual Quixote of Graves, published in 1773, and similar productions of this period have lost whatever interest that they may once have had”.1 Labelled by the literature as an anti-Methodist satire, a minor novel like The Spiritual Quixote is of interest, I argue, because, like other previous canonical eighteenth-century texts, it takes Quixotism as a critique of Methodism. A Nonconformist Christian confession born within the Church of England, Methodism was, spiritually and politically, a cultural institution “with the sovereign at its head”.2 Graves’ novel fills yet another gap in the Enlightenment cultural critique filtered through the lens of Quixotism, in that it draws attention to the hazardous practice encouraged by a sectarian movement driven by religious enthusiasm as true faith in God. My intention is not to probe the historical and political factors underlying this issue, but to look at Graves’ not wholly satirical treatment of Methodism as religious practice and spiritual reform in an “orthodox Quixotic narrative”,3 as Scott Paul Gordon points out. The Spiritual Quixote is a comic romp born of an incident that took place when Graves was a rector at Claverton. In Kierkegaard’s writings one can find a description of a passionately committed way of life that is distinguishable from both his conception of ethics and his version of Christianity. He calls this form of ethical religion or religious ethics “Religiousness A,” but he fails to give a vivid illustration of it that definitively distinguishes it from ethics and Christianity. As a result, the scholarship on Religiousness A is impoverished, and what would otherwise amount to a promising new way of being religious in a secular world has been largely regarded as unimportant or simply a watered-down version of Christianity.

The literary figure in which this formulation inheres is the Female Quixote – an eighteenth-century amalgamation of Cervantes's reading idealist and the satirized figure of the learned woman – who embodies both aesthetic enthusiasm and a feminist claim on the world of knowledge. While the Female Quixote has generally been understood as a satirical figure, I show that she is actually at the forefront of a development in British aesthetics in which art comes to be newly valued as a bulwark against worldliness. Such a development arises as part of mid-eighteenth-century sensibility culture and changes the meaning of an aesthetic practice that had been to that point criticized and satirized – that of over-investment in the arts, associated, as I show, with both the figure of the connoisseur and of the Female Quixote.

    Quixotic Legacy: The Female Quixote and the Professional Woman Writer Jodi L. Wyett Abstract: This essay argues that Charlotte Lennox’s The Female Quixote or, The Adventures of Arabella (1752) served as a fulcrum in eighteenth-century literary history by providing a figuration of the female quixote for subsequent women novelists who were keen to court absorbed readers on the one hand while countering stereotypes about women's critical failings on the other. The figure of the female quixote proves to be a significant mark of literary professionalism by reifying the spectre of the professional writer’s need for absorbed readers and dramatizing the occasion by which the woman writer demonstrates her own authority, paradoxically allowing both woman novel reader and woman novel writer to lay claim to intellectual authority. Ultimately, the main character Arabella's fictional model potentially echoes more actual eighteenth-century women’s experiences than her adventures at first suggest: the female quixote emerges as less a social outcast or a freak than a figure for women’s commonality, especially their intellectual and ethical ambitions in a world inimical to their interests. Famously, Henry Fielding himself provided a commentary on the phenomenon: in Joseph Andrews, he explains that the purpose of the “Contents prefi xed to every Chapter” resembles that of “Inscriptions over the Gates of Inns … , informing the Reader what Entertainment he is to expect, which if he likes not, he may travel on to the next.”1 In Joseph Andrews or other novels of the period, however, these titles in fact work in a less straightforward way than this quote suggests: while some do seem calculated to convey an adequate idea of a chapter’s contents, others appear as ironical, superfl uous, mysterious, or self-contradictory. While interpretations of individual novels have included references to the chapter titles, the phenomenon as a whole has not received the attention it deserves.

Romance, novel, satire, and history were not clearly differentiated. The newly emerging novel was challenging the once dominant romance genre and subsuming the traditional forms of verse satire. However, the former genres’ influence was so pervasive that writers often could not escape their influence, which made many eighteenth century texts the sites of contrasting literary genres. Lennox’s The Female Quixote (1752) is a text that captures such mid-century debates between novel as the new genre and romance and satire as older genres. The Female Quixote is Lennox’s comment on the intersection of literary genres and an experiment with the novel as genre for the woman writer at a time when the male practitioners of this new genre dominated the literary scene. Romance and novel are the dominant genres at play in this text, while satire is a weaker “genre” oscillating between these two and distorting their boundaries.
