GR Yaris: Ukován v žáru světového rallyového šampionátu Když Toyota v roce 2015 ohlásila návrat do světového rallyového šampionátu (WRC), součástí plánu byla i myšlenka postavit sportovní vůz inspirovaný rallyovými speciály. Vizí konstruktérů bylo využít technické poznatky a zkušenosti z mezinárodních soutěží na nejvyšší úrovni a aplikovat je na nový vůz schválený do běžného provozu, vhodný však i k soutěžnímu nasazení a zároveň cenově dostupný. Sportovní vůz vyráběný samotnou Toyotou – první po 20 letech – zároveň zhmotňoval osobní ambice Akia Toyody, prezidenta automobilky Toyota. V souvislosti se ziskem mistrovského titulu WRC 2018 v kategorii továrních týmů byl Akio Toyoda toho názoru, že vítězný vůz je klíčový k dosažení celosvětového uznání. Právě takovým vozem je GR Yaris, navržený a vyráběný zcela od nuly a určený k vítězství na těch nejvyšších úrovních. Jedná se o druhý globální model Toyoty s označením GR, navazující na úspěšné uvedení Toyoty GR Supra v roce 2018. Pokud jde o technické know-how a vznik vozu, o jehož koupi by zákazníci měli zájem, bylo nutné splnit několik základních podmínek. Tým vývojářů od počátku úzce spolupracoval s firmou Tommi Mäkinen Racing s cílem pochopit, jak vytyčených cílů vlastně dosáhnout. Jednalo se o detailní a velmi pracný proces, který však přinesl přesvědčivé výsledky v podobě vozidla, které se chlubí ideálním spojením tuhé a lehké konstrukce, agilního podvozku se skvělou odezvou a výkonného, nicméně kompaktního přeplňovaného motoru. Volantu vyrobených prototypů se chopili profesionální rallyoví jezdci, včetně členů továrního týmu TOYOTA GAZOO Racing WRT (World Rally Team), kteří vývojářům následně poskytli cennou zpětnou vazbu. Testování se zúčastnil i Akio Toyoda v odborné roli tzv. -

It’s a huge shame that the recent warm weather has conspired to take the edge off what has to be one of the biggest sporting spectacles of the season: World Rally Cars dancing on ice. The World Rally Championship is full of stop-you-in-your-tracks moments and the sight of a World Rally Car on the lock-stops – front corner nibbling a snowbank at the apex while the opposite corner leans on a wall and fires powder 15 feet in the air – is right up there. Right up there. But it’s not to be this time. The warm weather has forced a complete rethink of the route and even blizzard conditions for the rest of the week wouldn’t be enough to deliver the perfect winter rally. Recipe for perfect winter roads: heavy (like heavy, heavy) snow, semi-melt, deep-freeze, light snow shower. The semi-melt puts moisture into the road and snow base which, when frozen hard, provides a rock-solid ice base for the studded tyres to dig into. The freeze will also pack the snowbanks really hard, allowing the guys to go a gear higher through some corners. We’re missing a couple of elements of that recipe this week! This week will be about staying out of trouble and keeping as many studs in place as possible. That in itself provides an intriguing event, however. Let’s see who can drive smart as well as super-quick in these compromised and challenging conditions. -

2016 Rally Sweden February 11 - 14, 2016 ROUND 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 Rally Sweden February 11 - 14, 2016 2016 HYUNDAI’S HELLO Welcome to Rally Sweden, round two of the 2016 FIA World Rally Championship and another new challenge for Hyundai Motorsport. Rally Sweden will be the second event for the New Generation i20 WRC and a second different surface. We have tested on snow back in December and again last week with the new car and it’s gone well with no major issues. The drivers have been happy too; they’ve found good set-ups for the differential and the dampers so I think they are all quite confident. Thierry finished second in Sweden last year in the 2015 car but the drivers say that the New Generation i20 WRC feels even better. The car is a bit longer so it should be more stable on fast sections of road like you get in Sweden. We believe we have gained a bit of traction too, which is important on a low-grip surface like snow. In Sweden the car runs on gravel specification but there are specific details you can prepare for this event. You don’t want to get too much snow in the car because it adds extra weight so you have to make sure it is well sealed, inside the wheel arches and underneath the car. Also, because of the cold temperatures we don’t have to cool down the car as much as usual so we’ll use a different radiator. -

June 23, 2017 Toyota Motor Corporation GAZOO Racing Company Rally Poland: Preview TOYOTA GAZOO Racing accelerates onto super-fast Polish stages The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team will take on some of the fastest roads in the FIA World Rally Championship on Rally Poland from June 29 to July 2, when it will look to continue its strong momentum last time out in Sardinia. Now the team faces a brand-new challenge on rapid gravel stages that are very different from those of southern Europe, but with the possibility of more very hot weather. Car 10(Jari-Matti Latvala, Miikka Anttila) Although it is the fourth consecutive round held on gravel, Rally Poland poses a very different challenge to the events held before it, with soft, sandy and flowing stages. The high speeds can be similar to those seen on Rally Finland, so it will provide a good opportunity for the team and three crews to develop the performance of the Yaris WRC in these demanding conditions ahead of the following round. Rally Poland is based at the town of Mikolajki in the north-east of the country, where a super special stage hosts the opening stage on Thursday evening. It features again at the end of both Friday and Saturday’s action, when it follows two loops of four stages. The rally ends on Sunday with two stages ran twice, featuring the new 18.68-kilometre Paprotki test that serves as the event-closing Power Stage. To prepare for next week’s rally, all three drivers took part in a test on gravel in Estonia, using similar roads to those that will be seen in Poland. -

Reigning champs Gaurav Gill/Glen Macneall, which won the title in 2013 and 2016, will compete with Norwegian rookie team Ole Christian Veiby/Stig Rune Skjaermœn. Both teams enter the competition in ŠKODA FABIA R5 run by Australian team MRF. Gill won all last year’s rallys in the APRC and had already secured the championship one round before the end of the season. In 2017, however, he’s likely to face fierce opposition from promising Norwegian rookie Ole Christian Veiby. “The FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship is of major strategic significance to ŠKODA as the rallies are run in extremely important growth markets like India and China. On top of that, the demanding gravel tracks are ideal for challenging talented young drivers,” stresses ŠKODA motorsport boss Michal Hrabánek. ŠKODA can look back on unparalleled success in the APRC. November 10, 2017 Toyota Motor Corporation GAZOO Racing Company Rally Australia: Preview Australia the final test for the Yaris WRC in its development season The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team will conclude its debut season in the FIA World Rally Championship season at Rally Australia on November 16-19. At the end of a campaign where learning and car development has been the main priority, the Yaris WRC will be put through its paces competitively for one last time this year by Jari-Matti Latvala and Esapekka Lappi. Esapekka Lappi, Janne Ferm Rally Australia is held in New South Wales on varied gravel roads, with a combination of tight and twisty forest tracks and fast and flowing sections across open countryside. Trees line the side of the roads in many places, ready to catch out the unwary, while hanging dust can also be an added challenge. The rally is based in the coastal city of Coffs Harbour, and begins just to the north on Friday morning with three new-look stages that are then repeated in the afternoon. Friday and Saturday end with two passes of a sea-front super special stage in Coffs Harbour. The rest of Saturday’s action takes place to the south and includes the 49-kilometre Nambucca stage, which is separated in two for the afternoon pass. There are five stages on Sunday, with the second pass of Wedding Bells as the Power Stage. One-two at the “Monte”, the third in a row for driver, co-driver and team – Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) enjoyed a magnificent success at the Rally Monte Carlo. Their team-mates Andreas Mikkelsen/Anders Jæger (N/N) finished runner-up to complete a Volkswagen one-two and round off a dream start to the 2016 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). The latest victory marked the 35 th triumph in 40 rallies for the Polo R WRC the 33 rd career win for Ogier/Ingrassia, while Mikkelsen racked up his 15 th podium finish. Furthermore, Mikkelsen’s new co-driver Anders Jæger crowned his debut in the top category of the World Rally Championship with his first podium.
