For our July meeting we were delighted to welcome Mrs Carol Hunt, who is a professional dressmaker. She trained at Annabelinda under the watchful eye of Belinda O’Hanlon. Carol informed us that after four decades of trading, Belinda finally retired in May 2012. We marvelled at the tips that Carol showed us on how to take our tired, old clothes and turn them into something up-to-date. Carol had brought with her a dress rail that was full of all sorts of clothes, all of which had been altered, modernised or even just dyed. It’s amazing what you can do by just adding different buttons! She passed on trade secrets on how to cover up tears in garments, even showing us how to reline a jacket that was perfectly good on the outside but had a very worn and threadbare lining. It was very interesting to see what you A special car for your could achieve with the use of dye. Not just clothes, but shoes and cotton bags. Planned developments for St Peter’s School

In February this year the Head Teacher and Governors of St Peter’s School announced to parents, and to the community in Cassington and Worton News, the hope to build a new Foundation Stage Unit in place of the existing Pre-School Playgroup, and make other improvements to the school. Since then outline plans have been developed and will be discussed and presented to planning officers in the coming months.

The existing Pre-School is managed by an unpaid committee of volunteers, and the fluctuation in the number of children means that income can be unreliable. Changes in the education system has meant that Foundation Stage children have been introduced into mainstream schooling at the age of four which has further complicated the balance of age groups across the existing three classes in the School.

We are confident that a permanent building and formal management will create a sustainable environment for the future education of our young children. The new unit will be integrated into the school, managed by the Headteacher, and overseen by the School Governors. It will accommodate Foundation Stage children aged three and four, with most children joining a better balanced main school at age five.

If approved, the complete project is estimated to cost around £600,000. The majority of this will be funded by the Diocese, and the School already has some funds reserved or held in trust towards our contribution. However, before we can make our application for funding we need to raise an additional £25,000 and, when School resumes after the summer break, we hope to begin our fund-raising in earnest.

Can you help? Do you have some time and energy to spare, and the will to support St Peter’s School and help us achieve our target? If you are organised and enthusiastic, or have experience of applying for grants and sponsorship (or ideally all of these), and would like to volunteer to help then we would love to hear from you.

The School will be closed over the summer holidays, so please contact the Chair of Governors, Mrs Jan Macdonald on 01865 880006. After 3rd September, please contact the Headteacher on 01865 880443.

Thanks and best wishes, Mrs Jeanette Millward (Headteacher) Mrs Jan Macdonald (Chair of Governors)

17 New banks for recycling small electrical items

You can now recycle small electrical items at new depository banks being rolled out across Oxfordshire. West Oxfordshire District Council is providing a host of new WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) banks to allow people to recycle minor electrical items more conveniently. The new banks can be used for anything with electrical or electronic parts from hair straighteners to shavers, and toys to toasters. These will then be recycled or refurbished, reducing waste sent to landfill. Councillor David Harvey, Cabinet Member for the machines and anything that doesn’t fit in the chute of the Environment said, “We are committed to making the banks should be taken to a household waste and recycling District a greener place to live by making it more convenient centre (tip).
