Overview A powerful 9.0-magnitude earthquake hit Japan on March 11 at 1446 local time (0546 GMT), unleashing massive tsunami waves that crashed into Japan’s northeastern coast of Honshu, the largest and main island of Japan, resulting in widespread damage and destruction. According to the Government of Japan (GoJ), as of Friday (April 1), 11,734 people are confirmed dead and 16,375 people are reported to be missing. (Kyodo, Reuters, April 1) There are no new figures for the number of injured, but the UN reported last week that 2,766 people 1 were injured. Casualty numbers are likely to increase as emergency teams continue to reach and assess affected areas. The earthquake sparked widespread tsunami warnings across the Pacific. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the shallow quake struck at a depth of six miles (10 km) (20 km deep according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency), around 80 miles (125 km) off the eastern coast of Japan, and 240 miles (380 km) northeast of Tokyo. Key Concerns: • There are more than 166,000 evacuees. • UN says priority needs remain: fuel, prefabricated housing, clothing and medicine. Request for international assistance Japan has asked for international help to deal with the disaster and has so far received offers of assistance from 134 countries and 33 international organizations. It has accepted relief items from 24 countries to date. According to OCHA, the GoJ says the need for further international assistance is limited and any support should be in accordance with the GoJ’s criteria. -

Moreover, there is a lot of contradictory information in the literature about oriental arborvitae, especially in terms of microscopic structure. Therefore, the sapwood (S) and heartwood (H) of Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco from Central Europe were subjected to examinations. The presence of helical thickenings was found in earlywood tracheids (E). Latewood tracheids (L) were characterized by a similar thickness of radial and tangential walls and a similar diameter in the tangential direction in the sapwood and heartwood zones. In the case of earlywood tracheids, such a similarity was found only in the thickness of the tangential walls. The volume swelling (VS) of sapwood and heartwood after reaching maximum moisture content (MMC) was 12.8% (±0.5%) and 11.2% (±0.5%), respectively. Japanese Journal of Human Geography 64―6(2012) Reemerging Political Geography in Japan YAMAZAKI Takashi Osaka City University TAKAGI Akihiko Kyushu University KITAGAWA Shinya Mie University KAGAWA Yuichi The University of Shiga Prefecture Abstract The Political Geography Research Group (PGRG) of the Human Geographical Society of Japan was established in 2011 to promote political geographic studies in Japan. The PGRG is the very first research unit on political geography in the Society which was established in 1948. Political geography was once one of the weakest sub―fields in Japanese geography with a very limited number of scholars and published works. This, however, is not at all the case now. Political geography is a reemerging field in Japan. In this review paper, four of the PGRG members contribute chapters on general trends in Japanese political geography, legacies of Japanese wartime geopolitics, the introduction of “new geopolitics” into Japan, and geographical studies on environmental movements. All of them have confirmed with confidence that Japanese political geography has been reemerging and making steady progress in terms of theory, methodology, and case study since the 1980s. Although the current stage of Japanese political geography is still in the regenerative phase, they strongly believe that political geography should be firmly embedded in Japanese geography. From maple syrup to maple furniture. From musical instruments due to their tone-carrying trait to a wondrous range of landscape plants. Here are a few queries about maples I have received recently and a few rhetorical questions I have added to the mix for proper seasoning. Q. – Which maples are used to make maple syrup? A. – How topical. The obvious answer is sugar maple, Acer saccharum, with sweetness of the sap sewn into its Latin name. Silver maple is also sometimes used, and its Latin name, Acer saccharinum, suggests this is so. Black maple, Acer nigrum, is commonly used and it is so closely-related to sugar maple that it is often considered a sub-species. Box elder, Acer negundo, is also used somewhat in Canada, but to me one of the most surprisingly tapped maples, increasing in popularity in Ohio is red maple, Acer rubrum. Its sap is less sweet but red maple sugar-bushes are easier to manage. Q. Where does the name “Ácer” come from? A. The origins are somewhat obscure, but one theory is that its roots mean “sharp”, which if true would relate to the pointed nature of the leaf lobes on many maples. As a Latin genus name, Acer has over 120 species worldwide, with only one in the southern hemisphere. Q. – Which maples are native to the United States? A. - Five are familiar to us here in the northeastern U.S., namely sugar maple, red maple, silver maple, striped maple and box elder. -
