Responsibilities include: • organization and oversight of surveys of historic Jewish and other sites of ethnic and religious minorities in the following countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and writing and publishing reports of surveys, overseeing compilation of a database of information based on surveys: • Ukraine Jewish sites (1996-2001, rpt 2005) • Romania Jewish sites (1998-2002, rpt 2010) • Lithuania Old Believer sites (2001-04, rpt 2005) • Lithuania Jewish & Holocaust sites (2001-04) • Latvia Jewish sites (2001-05) • Bulgaria multi-ethnic sites (2001-06, rpts 2007) • Moldova Jewish Sites (2003-05, rpt 2010) • Bosnia Jewish & Holocaust sites (2004-06) • Estonia Jewish & Holocaust sites (begun 2004) • Poland Roma sites (2005-06, rpt 2007) • research on the history, location, condition and potential of individual historic sites in Central and Eastern at the request of the Commission • participation in fund raising activities for Commission • writing of speeches, press releases, web-postings and other material • preservation project planning and management, including: • Pogrom Memorial in Kielce, Poland (2006) • Erection of Holocaust memorial markers in Estonia • Memorial design for Jasenovic Concentration/Death Camp, Croatia • Cemetery conservation and monuments in Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine • Restoration of synagogues (Bulgaria, Latvia, etc.) • Restoration at Jewish cemetery in Sarajevo, Bosnia 1995–2000 Jewish Heritage Program Consultant, World Monuments Fund (New York): Responsibilities similar to below, including (1995-2000) continuation of oversight of programs in progress, but with greater focus on management of the following specific preservation projects: Tempel Synagogue, Cracow, Poland; Etz Hayim Synagogue, Hania (Crete), Greece; Paradesi Synagogue, Cochin, India; Ibn Danan Synagogue, Fez, Morocco; Old Jewish Cemetery, Venice, Italy; and subsequently (since 1999) project reviews, fund raising advice, and other assistance to the program as needed. 1999–2000 Executive Director Preservation Association of Central New York (part-time) Responsibilities included: §administration of the organization §organization and oversight of advocacy, education & research efforts §outreach through public speaking and writing §grant writing and fund raising 1989-1995 Director, Jewish Heritage Council World Monuments Fund Responsibilities included creating and administering an international program for the documentation and preservation of historic Jewish sites and structures worldwide. Specific tasks included overall administration and planning, fund raising, and writing grant and contract proposals (over 1.2 million dollars raised over five years). Projects completed or initiated in 1989-1994 included: • -- organization and planning of an international conference, The Future of Jewish Monuments, with over thirty speakers from a dozen countries (17-19 November 1990). • -- curating a traveling exhibition on the preservation of Jewish monuments (opened in New York, November, 1990, traveling through February 1995 with stops in eight cities. • -- organization and supervision on a multi-year inventory and survey of Jewish sites in Central and Eastern Europe on behalf of the United States Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad (begun March, 1991) • -- organization of a preservation program for the Jewish catacombs in Rome (completed 1996) • -- organization and planning of an architectural and photographic survey of Jewish heritage in Morocco (completed autumn 1990, report published 1993, photograph archive completed 1995); and Syria (completed 1996) • -- organization and planning of restoration of the Tempel Synagogue, Krakow, Poland and the preparation of a list of preservation priorities for WMF. • -- identification and selection of ten
