SPORTS SATURDAY, APRIL 1, 2017 Global talent shines in US college Final Four WASHINGTON: International players have played key roles in helping three teams reach today’s semi-finals of the US national college basketball tournament and could prove decisive in deciding the “Final Four” champion. While five-time winner North Carolina (31-7) boasts an all- American lineup, semi-final foe Oregon (33-5) and last- four rivals South Carolina (26-10) and Gonzaga (36-1) all have five players from beyond US borders gathering at Glendale, Arizona. “I’ve coached a lot of foreign kids. And I understand their journey. That’s what my family went through,” said South Carolina coach Frank Martin, the son of Cuban political exiles and first American-born member of his family. “I respect the journey that they’re on. I respect the fact they come here to figure out a way to make a better life so they can do better to help their families. And they go through difficult moments.” Martin said his international team would have no problem with a traditional champion visit to the White House despite US President Donald Trump’s recent immi- gration crackdown. “We live in the United States of America. I’m not visiting an individual’s home,” Martin said. “We’re visiting the top building that represents the great country that has given every single one of us an opportunity. That’s the way I’d look at it.” Gonzaga, a small-school perennial contender making a Final Four debut, features Polish 7-foot-1 center Przemek Karnowski, who averages 12.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.0 blocked shots a game. -

SPORTS SATURDAY, MARCH 18, 2017 Freediver Nordblad: A mermaid in icy water SOMERO: As a young girl she dreamt of becoming a lion tamer. Johanna Nordblad became a freediving sensation, capable of incredible exploits under the ice. No woman has ever before managed to swim over 50 meters under the ice in freezing temperatures wearing just a swimsuit. The 41-year-old set a new world record at Lake Paijanne in her native Finland in March 2015, braving the tenebrous depths to swim 55 seconds between two small holes drilled in the thick ice. “If someone had said to me ten years ago that one day I would dive under the ice I would have said ‘no never’,” Nordblad told AFP. “I like the idea of constantly testing myself. I like to really know where my limits are. I tell myself I can’t do something but then when I do I find it’s quite easy. I was just scared.” Nordblad tried freediving for the first time aged 25. Four years later she was a world record holder after covering 158 meters underwa- ter with flippers. Capable of holding her breath for over six minutes, she could have continued to push the limits solely in snorkeling. But a serious biking accident in 2010 that almost took her leg opened another door. The only relief for the shattered bones in her leg was cold water treat- ment. “Little by little I got used to it and after several months I wanted to put the two legs in cold water. And then I dived. -

Wheeler led the league with two goals and eight assists, including a trio of three-point performances, to propel the Jets to a 3-0-1 week and the top of the Western Conference standings. The 31-year-old Plymouth, Minn., native leads the NHL with 28 assists and ranks fourth in the league with 35 points through 27 games this season. Price went 4-0-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and .950 save percentage to help the Canadiens (13-12-3) post a perfect week and extend their win streak to five games overall. The four-game win streak comes after he missed 10 games with a lower-body injury. Faksa had an NHL-best five goals and plus-7 rating in four games to power the Stars (16-10-1) to a 4-0-0 week. https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/manitoba-moose/winnipeg-boasts-dynamic- hockey-duo-461983633.html\ Winnipeg boasts dynamic hockey duo Local squads tops in NHL, AHL standings By: Mike McIntyre These are heady days for hockey fans in Winnipeg, who have not one but two first-place clubs to cheer for.
