Arvidsson Lifts Predators Over Capitals with 2-1 SPORTS SATURDAY, MARCH 18, 2017 Freediver Nordblad: A mermaid in icy water SOMERO: As a young girl she dreamt of becoming a lion tamer. Johanna Nordblad became a freediving sensation, capable of incredible exploits under the ice. No woman has ever before managed to swim over 50 meters under the ice in freezing temperatures wearing just a swimsuit. The 41-year-old set a new world record at Lake Paijanne in her native Finland in March 2015, braving the tenebrous depths to swim 55 seconds between two small holes drilled in the thick ice. “If someone had said to me ten years ago that one day I would dive under the ice I would have said ‘no never’,” Nordblad told AFP. “I like the idea of constantly testing myself. I like to really know where my limits are. I tell myself I can’t do something but then when I do I find it’s quite easy. I was just scared.” Nordblad tried freediving for the first time aged 25. Four years later she was a world record holder after covering 158 meters underwa- ter with flippers. Capable of holding her breath for over six minutes, she could have continued to push the limits solely in snorkeling. But a serious biking accident in 2010 that almost took her leg opened another door. The only relief for the shattered bones in her leg was cold water treat- ment. “Little by little I got used to it and after several months I wanted to put the two legs in cold water. And then I dived. I’m a freediver, it’s normal for me to dive in the water. Even if it’s cold.” ‘Beautiful, scary’ She’s aware that she is doing something different, but for her nothing extraordinary, the result of training and self awareness. “Most people are convinced they would panic. So they are fascinated because I’m very relaxed. “People think it’s so cold, its so scary and it’s so dark but it’s not like that, for me it’s beautiful. “I like to dive, it makes me happy. I don’t have to go to the other side of the world,” she said. In two months she will participate in the Finnish freediving national championships before bid- ding to break her own world record in 2018 and the record of Dane Stig Avall Severinsen, who swam 76.2 meters under the ice on April 17, 2013. SPORTS SATURDAY, APRIL 1, 2017 Global talent shines in US college Final Four WASHINGTON: International players have played key roles in helping three teams reach today’s semi-finals of the US national college basketball tournament and could prove decisive in deciding the “Final Four” champion. While five-time winner North Carolina (31-7) boasts an all- American lineup, semi-final foe Oregon (33-5) and last- four rivals South Carolina (26-10) and Gonzaga (36-1) all have five players from beyond US borders gathering at Glendale, Arizona. “I’ve coached a lot of foreign kids. And I understand their journey. That’s what my family went through,” said South Carolina coach Frank Martin, the son of Cuban political exiles and first American-born member of his family. “I respect the journey that they’re on. I respect the fact they come here to figure out a way to make a better life so they can do better to help their families. And they go through difficult moments.” Martin said his international team would have no problem with a traditional champion visit to the White House despite US President Donald Trump’s recent immi- gration crackdown. “We live in the United States of America. I’m not visiting an individual’s home,” Martin said. “We’re visiting the top building that represents the great country that has given every single one of us an opportunity. That’s the way I’d look at it.” Gonzaga, a small-school perennial contender making a Final Four debut, features Polish 7-foot-1 center Przemek Karnowski, who averages 12.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.0 blocked shots a game.

  • Turnbull Hockey Pool For
Turnbull Hockey Pool for Each year, Turnbull students participate in several fundraising initiatives, which we promote as a way to develop a sense of community, leadership and social responsibility within the students. Last year's grade 7 and 8 students put forth a great deal of effort campaigning friends and family members to join Turnbull's annual NHL hockey pool, raising a total of $1750 for a charity of their choice (the United Way). This year's group has decided to run the hockey pool for the benefit of Help Lesotho, an international development organization working in the AIDS-ravaged country of Lesotho in southern Africa. From www.helplesotho.org "Help Lesotho’s programs foster hope and motivation in those who are most in need: orphans, vulnerable children, at-risk youth and grandmothers. Our work targets root causes and community priorities, including literacy, youth leadership training, school twinning, child sponsorship and gender programming. Help Lesotho is an effective, sustainable organization that is working at the grass-roots level to support the next generation of leaders in Lesotho." Your participation in this year's NHL hockey pool is very much appreciated. We believe it will provide students and their friends and families an opportunity to have fun together while giving back to their community by raising awareness and funds for a great cause. Prizes: > Grand Prize awarded to contestant whose team accumulates the most points over the regular NHL season = 10" Samsung Galaxy Tablet > Monthly Prizes awarded to the contestants whose teams accumulate the most points over each designated period (see website) = Two Movie Passes How it Works: > Everyone in the community is welcome to join in on the fun.

  • Feature Selection and Dimension Reduction
DATA SCIENCE REPORT SERIES Feature Selection and Data Reduction (DRAFT) Patrick Boily1,2,3,4, Olivier Leduc1, Andrew Macfie3, Aditya Maheshwari3, Maia Pelletier1 Abstract Data mining is the collection of processes by which we can extract useful insights from data. Inherent in this definition is the idea of data reduction: useful insights (whether in the form of summaries, sentiment analyses, etc.) ought to be “smaller” and “more organized” than the original raw data. The challenges presented by high data dimensionality (the so-called curse of dimensionality) must be addressed in order to achieve insightful and interpretable analytical results. In this report, we introduce the basic principles of dimensionality reduction and a number of feature selection methods (filter, wrapper, regularization), discuss some current advanced topics (SVD, spectral feature selection, UMAP) and provide examples (with code). Keywords feature selection, dimension reduction, curse of dimensionality, principal component analysis, manifold hypothesis, manifold learning, regularization, subset selection, spectral feature selection, uniform manifold approximation and projection Funding Acknowledgement Parts of this report were funded by a University of Ottawa grant to develop teaching material in French (2019-2020). These were subsequently translated into English before being incorporated into this document. 1Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Ottawa, Ottawa 2Sprott School of Business, Carleton University, Ottawa 3Idlewyld Analytics and Consulting
