hiyabucks.com | 19 Did you know? If you have a Pacemaker you should not be within 2 ft (0.6m) of an induction hob.

Late last year I had a pacemaker fitted at the same time my daughter was having a new kitchen installed. One of the items she had in her new kitchen was an induction hob and she had been advised that anyone with a pacemaker was not to get any closer than 2 ft. The electrician who wired up the kitchen did not know of this problem, but the fitter who put the hob in advised my daughter of this danger. When my daughter purchased the hob the shop did not tell her of this risk. I would think by law this should be a requisite on the vendor selling this product to advise all purchasers of the harm this could cause to someone like me! Those who have pacemakers fitted should be aware of other areas to be kept clear of: • Abdominal stimulators for body building • Electronic body fat scales • Magnet mattresses & pillows • Welding equipment above 130 amps For additional information please visit www.bhf.org.uk/ informationsupport/heart-matters-magazine/medical/ask-the-experts/ induction-hobs-and-pacemakers Robin Gardner

Independence In Your Home

How we as a country fund support for the elderly is very much in the news at the moment. Political debate has included a hastily backtracked ‘death tax’ and currently includes: • Considering funding a universal care entitlement with a potential privately funded ‘care supplement’ • Insurance to pay for improved service levels • Taxing or making the winter fuel allowance means tested • Reduced or no free television licences • Increased National Insurance charges

It’s a politically difficult area, but with finite local government budgets and increasing demand it is clear that answers must be sought. A government ‘green paper’ is long overdue. We can debate the age at which one becomes ‘elderly’ but in reality one is as old as one feels. However just about everyone agrees that being in your own home is the best bet given normal circumstances. At The 50plus we are increasingly providing support for the elderly at home and last year introduced a service package designed to assist with this. The 50plus Independence In Your Home service provides a broad range of adaptation, maintenance and improvement options to the home for the elderly for easier and improved comfort. The Gardening club have gone “Cosmos Crazy”! We have a greenhouse packed with cosmos; they are so easy to grow and the children love them. They often describe them as “happy flowers” which is rather sweet. There are also geraniums, sweet peas and garzania’s filling the shelves so we are definitely summer ready here. Outside the pace of growth is a little slower but it’s early days. We do try and plant early so all our vegetables can be harvested before we break up for the summer but it’s a bit hit and miss I must admit. Summer’s Head Gardeners will be announced shortly, always a time for smiling and a lot of jumping around the greenhouse, so watch this space. Heath Singer’s Peggy Woolhouse wins British Citizen Award

This prestigious Award is given to people who have made an outstanding contribution to their local community. Peggy has led the Heath Singers Ladies choir for 50 years starting from a small group of W.I. members. From the very start choir concerts have raised money for local charities and to date to the value of well over £50,000. For 42 years Peggy also played the piano for the local dancing school; just two of her many contributions to the community of Flackwell heath. Her enthusiasm for acknowledging talented young musicians means she has invited many of them to give solo performances in the choir concerts. She also enthusiastically formed a choir of children at the local infant school. Music is Peggy’s life and always will be. She is a very special lady. She was surprised at being given the British Citizen Award and said, “I can’t believe how doing something I love and enjoy has brought me such recognition”. The Heath Singers 50th anniversary concerts will be held in Christ Church Flackwell Heath on 13th and 14th June. Tickets will be available from Peggy Woolhouse on 01628 523464.

Peggy would love to hear from any former Heath Singers.

hiyabucks.com | 37 38 | hiyabucks.com “On Fire” tour comes to Wycombe Swan Theatre Wednesday 9th October 2019

Celebrating 55 years since the release of the debut smash hit single ‘Shout’, Lulu’s ‘On Fire’ tour will see the Grammy-nominated singer play 35-dates across the UK, starting on September 19th and ending on 2nd November. ‘On Fire’ is a show packed full of hits, such as ‘The Man Who Sold The World’, ‘Relight My Fire’, ‘To Sir With Love’ and, of course, ‘Shout’, amongst many others, as Lulu recounts her remarkable life now at 70 years old and a career that has outshone many of her contemporaries. Backed by her band, a huge LED screen (for the first time) showing carefully selected personal and career defining moments, Lulu will have audiences nationwide sitting, standing, dancing, singing, laughing and simply listening to an amazing story that started on 3rd November 1948. Lulu said, “I’ve so enjoyed touring with my amazing band over the past few years that it didn’t take very long for me to get the urge to hit the road again. We’ll be playing here, there and everywhere, so I invite fans old and new to come along and share a great night covering my six decades in music”. Singer, songwriter, actress, business woman and national treasure are all labels that have been attributed to Lulu, who has stayed the course, when many have faltered, simply because of her talent as an artist and her determination as a person.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE …. 5th June - 1st July

Jeny Sarreti and Trisha Scott, two of the founder members of the Watercress Painters based in the historic village of Ewelme, will be exhibiting in Bourne End library. Going under the exhibition title ‘Where the Wild Things are’, many of the paintings are inspired by the beauty of the surrounding Chiltern hills and countryside. The synergy created by the two artists is evident in their different styles. Jeny loves the freedom and unpredictability of watercolour whilst Trisha loves colour and this is reflected in her vibrant landscapes. They would love you to come and visit to cast a critical eye over their paintings and selection of greetings cards.

Looking for a great location for a lunch date, or perhaps just somewhere to grab that morning brew? There’s no need to look further than NORSK., the Scandi-inspired café and coffee shop that’s changing the way we think about eating and drinking. We took the journey over to Haddenham, a village just outside Aylesbury, to try some delicious, mindful food in an intimate environment. It must be very satisfying for Cathrine Tjore and devotion to the Scandinavian concept of ‘hygge’, her husband Simon Keeley to now be the proud a type of mindfulness that takes a simple and owners of NORSK., which is situated in the clear approach to life. However, when it comes to flavour, NORSK. doesn’t hold anything back – everything has a rich tapestry of flavours, from the salmon open-sandwich that delights the senses by adding the subtle flavour of cucumber with the strengths of horseradish, lemon and dill, to the carefully spiced, curry-marinated cauliflower that provides a flavoursome base of the roasted cauliflower salad. If you’re not looking for a whole meal, there are plenty of cakes and pastries on offer, too. If you’re in need of a little extra headspace and some wholesome food, NORSK. is the perfect place to get a coffee, a hearty meal and decompress away from the busyness of everyday life.
