Go with the Faux: Re-Evaluating the Design of the Richardson Dilworth House Abstract When elected to the office of Philadelphia's Mayor in 1956, Richardson Dilworth pledged his administration's dedication towards the physical improvement of Philadelphia. The Mayor made the revitalization of southeast quadrant of the city's core, known as Society Hill, a priority during his administration. As a symbol of his commitment, Dilworth decided to move himself and his family to the neighborhood. The Dilworths commissioned restoration architect, G. Edwin Brumbaugh. Brumbaugh designed a three and a half story, single family Colonial Revival house on the former site of two, 1840s structures. Dilworth resided in the house until his death in 1974. Discussions pertaining to the site's significance have focused narrowly on the building's associations, rather than the physical structure.

    MARTIN GROVE BRUMBAUGH, PIONEERING SUPERINTENDENT OF THE PHILADELPHIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS By V. A. CIAMPA Orbisonia High School, Orbisonia, Pennsylvania A FTER graduation, Martin Grove Brumbaugh became an Alinstructor in and later president of his Alma Mater, Juniata College of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. From 1884 to 1890, he was Superintendent of Schools of Huntingdon county. In the next few years, after one year at Harvard, he secured his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1894. Heeding Dr. Brumbaugh's persistent plea for more adequate training in pedagogy, Provost Harrison of the University of Pennsylvania created a chair of pedagogy the following year, 1895, and in recognition of his leadership in educational matters Dr. Brumbaugh was appointed first professor of pedagogy. This position he filled on a part-time basis, rendering his services to Juniata College at the same time. During the week he attended to his duties as president and teacher of Juniata College, and on Saturdays he taught his graduate classes in pedagogy at the University of Pennsylvania. After the Spanish-American War, Dr. Brumbaugh was per- suaded by Provost Harrison, who granted him a two-year leave of absence, to accept President McKinley's appointment as first United States Commissioner of Education to Puerto Rico. There Dr. Brumbaugh set up and put into running order a thoroughly American school system. His success in this task is un- questionable. With the termination of his work in Puerto Rico in 1902, he returned to teach his classes at the University of Pennsyl- vania. Rosenberger from Europe and the British Isles to America and Migrationsultimately to the four corners of continental United States comprise a fascinating study. The identifying of the migra- tions of any one major segment of the vast throng, throughout a half- dozen or more generations, is not an easy task. In general the early arrivals settled near the Atlantic coast. Later waves of immigrants tended to move beyond the coastal area in order to find inexpensive land. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries hundreds of thousands of people from the British Isles and from German-speaking parts of Europe migrated west. InNew York they followed the Mohawk Trail and later used the Erie Canal from Albany to Buffalo. InPennsylvania they travelled the Lancaster Turnpike, opened in 1797 from Phila- delphia to Lancaster, and the Pennsylvania State Road from Phila- delphia to Pittsburgh via Lancaster, now known as the Lincoln High- way or U.S. Route 30, a thoroughfare dating back to the construction of the Forbes Road in 1758. In the 1840's a large proportion of the persons travelling from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh on their way to the Ohio country rode the cars of the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad and the boats on the Pennsylvania Canal which were carried over the mountains by the Allegheny Portage Railroad. Traditional historical narrative typically sets out to add new knowledge about a historical event and/or era—the so-called “filling in of the gaps.” In other cases, it may “set the record straight” or offer a new angle to an older accepted narrative.

Edwin Brumbaugh and His Contributions to the Field of Restoration Architecture Abstract This thesis examines the career of restoration architect G. Edwin Brumbaugh in order to map the evolution of his ideologies, methodology, and professional practice, and to determine the degree to which his career affected the professionalization of restoration architecture during the twentieth century. Working primarily in Philadelphia and the surrounding area, Brumbaugh was well known among those interested in early American architecture and was widely regarded as one of the leading practitioners in the Mid-Atlantic states, in addition to being nationally recognized for his expertise and accomplishments. Brumbaugh was deeply interested in the vernacular architecture of southeastern Pennsylvania, specifically that of the ennsylvP ania Germans. His spiritual connection to seventeenth and eighteenth century architecture, along with his insistence upon accurate and careful restoration based in sound historical, archaeological, and architectural investigations set him apart from his contemporaries.
