Most of the Golden Bears head to the 60th-annual Modesto Relays, Sat., May Mar. 24 at UC Davis Invite M: 1st, W: 1st 12. A handful of athletes also are at the Stanford Qualifier Friday. Cal juniors Matt Blair and M. 31-A. 1 at Stanford Invite NTS Shawn Adkins vie for the Pac-10 decathlon and heptathlon titles at home at Edwards Apr. 5-7 at Texas Relays NTS Stadium, May 12-13. Competition begins each day at 11 a.m. Apr. 13-14 Brutus Hamilton M: 1st, W: 4th Apr. 20-22 at Mount SAC Relays NTS CAL AMONG CONFERENCE BEST IN MULTI-EVENT HISTORY Apr. 21 at Woody Wilson Invite NTS The Bears have dominated the Pac-10 multi events in recent memory. They have won the Apr. 28-29 at Cal-Nev. Meet M: 1st, W: 2nd last four conference decathlon crowns (1997 and 1998 – Ross Bomben – 1999 and 2000 May 5 at Big Meet M: 2nd, W: 2nd May 11 at Stanford Qualifier 5:00 p.m. (7890) – Bevan Hart.) Last year, Missy Vanek claimed the heptathlon title (5505) for Cal. In May 12 at Modesto Relays 11:00 a.m. 1993, Chris Huffins won Cal’s first Pac-10 decathlon title. Hart has graduated and Vanek is May 12-13 Pac-10 Multis + 11:00 a.m. redshirting this season with a stress fracture in her back. Blair and Adkins are the Bears top May 19-20 Pac-10 Meet + 10 a.m./1 p.m. hopefuls this year. Blair ranks third in the league with a PR of 7208, while Adkins is sixth M. 30-J. 2 at NCAA Champ. TBA with a total of 5000 points in the only helptathlon of her career. Last year, Blair finished sixth June 14-17at USATF Champ. TBA at the Pac-10 Championship with 7008 points. The favorites at this year’s meet are UO’s All home meets in bold are at Edwards Santiago Lorenzo (7,726) and UCLA’s Michelle Perry (5657). Stadium/Goldman Field (22,000). * taped delayed FOX Sports Net broadcast BEARS COME UP SHORT AT BIG MEET HEAD COACH ERV HUNT For the first time since 1997, Stanford swept Cal in both the men’s and women’s team races Erv Hunt begins his 30th season at at the annual Big Meet. In the 107th men’s Big Meet, the Cardinal nipped the Bears, 82-81, for California and 29th as head coach. Since the closest Big Meet victory since the Bears defeted the Cardinal by the same score in 1988. 1992, Hunt has overseen Cal’s men’s and Stanford clinched the dual meet with second- and third-place finishes in the triple jump. CAL’S 2001 NCAA QUALIFIERS Automatic BERRO, ADKINS TURN IN HUGE PRS AT BIG MEET Bolota Asmerom 5000m 13:31.88 Sophomore Joe Berro and junior Shawna Adkins turned in perhaps the biggest PRs of the Jennifer Joyce Hammer 203-8 day for the Bears at the Big Meet. Berro placed third in the javelin with a mark of 197-0, Dana Lawson Shot Put 53-4.5 bettering his previous PR by almost 16 feet (181-11) and ranking him eighth all-time at Cal, Provisional ahead of Huffins (193-8). Adkins also had a huge PR in her fourth-place finish in the javelin Bolota Asmerom 1500m 3:42.73 Matt Blair Decathlon 7208 of 131-11, which improved upon her previous best of 121-1. Adkins also took third in the Nate DeSomber Shot Put 58-5.25 long jump with a PR of 18-10w, improving upon her old best mark of 18-6.5. Payton, this was scheduled long before you hit your little speed bump a week or so ago. So we'll tell the folks about that, but as we start doing this, I think of you and I sharing the better part of the last 50 years telling stories to one another. Laughing with one another. Laughing at one another. [laughter] Murphy: [0:38] But here we are to recap this. Tell the folks about your little speed bump, you're doing fine, you look great, things are gonna be fine. Payton Jordan: [0:46] I'm sure everything will be fine, I had a slight bump in road, had a little lump on my neck. And they found out it was a very rare cancer and we had to do a little cutting and we'll be doing some radiation and in no time at all, I'll be back up and at them. Murphy: [1:00] They didn't give you a face lift, too, because you're looking so pretty here. [both laugh] Jordan: [1:05] They kind of knit my nerves on one side a little bit, but I'm going to be OK. The NCRR is available at many road races and track meets throughout the area for 25^ an issue, or for $3.50 per year by subscription (12 issues). A ll West Valley TC members receive their copies by mail if their dues are paid up for the current year. This paper's success depends on you, the readers, so please send us any pertinent information on the NorCal running scene that you would lik e to see in p rin t. We can always use good photos fo r our publication, preferrably black & white, and of good contrast. A l l information should be sent to the e d ito r: NorCal Running Re­ view, P.O.     UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA • JEW§ Bierman Field Athletic Building 516 15th Avenue Southeast Minneapolis, MN 55455 (612) 625-4090 Fax 625-0359 For Immediate Release April18, 1997 GOPHERS SIGN CLARK TO NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT The University of Minnesota basketball office announced today that Kevin Clark of Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City, Kan., has signed a national letter of intent. Clark, a 6-2 180-pound guard, was named one of the top shooting guards in the country by Basketball Times magazine. He averaged 23.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game this past season for Cowley County and led them to a 19-12 record in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. Clark was named the MVP of the conference all-star game after recording 24 points; eight rebounds and four assists. Prior to attending Cowley County, Clark played one season at Odessa Junior College in Odessa, Texas, where he averaged 22.1 points and was an all-conference selection, finishing second in the conference in scoring. A native of Savannah, Ga., Clark graduated from Richmond Hill Academy in Richmond Hill, Ga., in 1995. He averaged 30 points per game his sophomore year, and led his team to the state title. That year he was an all-conference and all-state selection and was the Class A Player of the Year. His junior season, he upped his scoring average to 32 points per game and was again the Class A Player of the Year, leading his team to another Class A state title. Going into his senior season of high school ball he began to complain of fatigue and dehydration.

    C OBB T RACK AND A NGELL F IELD in the women’s 10,000 meters at Cobb Track and Angell Field and in 2003 Ethiopia’s Werknesh Kidane set a U.S. All-Comers record in the women’s 10,000 meters. The list of stadium records at Cobb Track and Angell Field is second to none. In addition, Cobb Track and Angell Field was the site of the 2002 and 2003 U.S. National and Junior National Championships, that featured track and field stars Marion Jones, Maurice Greene, Gail Devers, Allen Johnson and Adam Nelson. At the 2004 Cardinal Track and Field Invitational, 15 Olympic A-standards were achieved, including a track record by the great Sonia O’Sullivan of Ireland. Stanford’s Cobb Track and Angell Field has become the epicen- ter of track and field in the United States. Upon its renewed inception in 1996, former Director of Track and Field Vin Lananna stated, “The newly renovated Cobb Track and Angell Field is a wonderful homecoming for Stanford Track and Field. This restored facility makes it possible for Stanford to host top quality, national and international meets and provides a more intimate setting for the fans and a more visible location within the Stanford community. It is a tremendous step forward for our program, Stanford Athletics and the track and field world as a whole.” Cobb Track and Angell Field is the home of Stanford Track and Field. Through the dedicated efforts of many people, including Chuck Cobb, Otis Chandler and Pitch Johnson, Stanford’s dream for a state-of-the-art track and field facility has become a reality.

During those 25 years, the association had grown to become the largest in the United States with innovative and unique programs in all of the sports disciplines. This has been done by the concerted effort of our dedicated office staff and the many volunteers who work for the sport of athletics in Northern California and Northern Nevada. Consequently, the Board now felt that it was time to recognize these lifetime contributions of the members and athletes during that period. These include the disciplines of track & field, road racing, race walking, cross country, ultrarunning, mountain running and athletics for the disabled. Although there are a number of individual committee and board awards already in place to recognize the contribution of current endeavors and even a few for lifetime service, the Pacific Association Hall of Fame allows the membership to recognize and immortalize contributions to our local athletics sport scene, which are exceptional as well as sustaining.
