Manufacture of antivenoms (AVs) therefore requires potency testing using in vivo models to ensure AV efficacy. As part of ongoing research to replace small animals as the standard model for AV potency testing, we developed an alternate in vivo method using the embryonated egg model (EEM). In this model, the survival of chicken embryos envenomated in ovo is determined prior to 50% gestation, when they are recognized as animals by animal welfare legislation. Embryos were found to be susceptible to a range of snake, spider, and marine venoms. This included funnel-web spider venom for which the only other vertebrate, non-primate animal model is newborn mice. Neutralization of venom with standard AV allowed correlation of AV potency results from the EEM to results from animal assays. Our findings indicate that the EEM provides an alternative, insensate in vivo model for the assessment of AV potency. The EEM may enable reduction or replacement of the use of small animals, as longer-term research that enables the elimination of animal use in potency testing continues.

HISTORY OF DISCOVERY OF THE REPTILIA FIRST ENCOUNTERS When Australia was first encountered by Asian and European seafarers, the entire continent, together with Tasmania, was occupied by indigenous peoples who had an intimate knowledge of the country’s reptiles and their habits. Reptiles then and now figure large in Aboriginal culture, including art and religion. It is ironic that herpetologists (Cogger 1970) first formally recorded the pig-nosed turtle (Carettochelys insculpta) from Australia in 1970, only to find later that this species had long ago been recorded for posterity by Aboriginal artists in the caves of western Arnhem Land (Fig. 13.1). The large Oenpelli python, Morelia oenpelliensis, was not known to science until 1975 (Gow 1977), but is also recorded in the early rock art of Arnhem Land. Before the discovery of the eastern coast of Australia by Captain James Cook in 1770, and the subsequent establishment of the first European settlement in Australia—the British penal settlement at Sydney (Port Jackson) in 1788— Australia had been visited, though not always intentionally, by a number of European seafarers and explorers (Whitley 1970). Few records (and apparently no specimens) derived from these early encounters with the Australian fauna exist. Whitley (1970) recorded that no reptiles were among the few Australian animals recorded, apart from crocodiles and marine turtles noted from the southern coastal waters of New Guinea by the Spaniard Luis Vaez de Torres, who in 1606 passed through the Strait subsequently named in his honour.

Building upon the innovative and world- recognised Devil Ark model, the Committee of Management approved and executed actions to change the object of our fund throughout the year. Rather than exclusively raising funds for the Tasmanian Devil, we have now have the ability to raise funds for ‘Native Australian Wildlife Conservation’. This was the birth of Aussie Ark. Aussie Ark is a conservation initiative located in the Barrington Tops of NSW, adjacent to, and in association with Devil Ark - a highly successful conservation breeding facility for Tasmanian Devils. The land forming both projects has been generously made available by the Packer family. Both projects are managed by the Committee of Management of Australia’s Wildlife Ark (Aussie Ark) a not-for-profit deductible-gift-recipient organisation under the Registry of Environmental Organisations.
