Aswe celebrate 20 years of caring for the community. we look back with appreciation to all of the people who helped us get to where we are today. We've taken some big steps through the past 20 years. Merging the Mattoon Memorial and Charleston Community hospi- tals was no small feat in itself. And since then we've added a Regional Cancer Center; established six busy community clinics; added countless programs and services; added nearly 11 5.000 square feet during our recent construction; and built a solid staff of physicians. Every step of the way. we've been blessed with the support of so many fine people: our founders, board members, donors, employees, volunteers - and of course the residents of all of the communities we serve, whose trust and confidence we've worked so hard to earn. Our thanks to each and every one. We couldn't have done it without you! I I I- l BUSH LaJC~N €dS1000 HealthHEALTH Ccntu Drive SYSTEM RO. Page 2 Comments From The Artistic Director Someone once said it takes three elements to make theatre: a performer, a space in which to perform, and an audience. Without you, that vital third element, there would be no the- atre - not in Sullivan, not in Chicago, not even on Broadway. So, you can see how impor- tant you are to us, not just because you fuel our coffers, but because you fuel our very artis- tic soul! If you see Lost World or watch reruns of Roseanne, no matter how you react, the dinosaurs (reptilian or human) clon't change their behavioral patterns. You have no effect, other than financial, on their performances. In theatre, your presence and reactions alter the energy, the very chemistry, of every single performance. In simple terms, we need you to make our performance complete. It is, therefore, altogether appropri- hlI. Seth Reines - Artistic Director ate as we celebrate our 40th Season, that we take time to thank Seth is delighted to be returning for his 10th season as Artistic you, our audience, for being an essential part of our theatrical Director of The Little Theatre. • Gretchen Cryer and Nancy Ford
GRETCHEN CRYER AND NANCY FORD: ELEVATING THE FEMALE VOICE IN AMERICAN MUSICAL THEATER A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN MUSIC DECEMBER 2018 By Nancy Jane Kerns Thesis Committee: Katherine McQuiston, Chairperson Abigail Fine Laurence Paxton DEDICATION For my parents, Ellen Louise (Denzer) Kerns and Charles Fredric Kerns i ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am grateful for the support of so many people as I wrote my thesis. My Ohio visits with my sister, Pat, and my brother, Mike, and their families were filled with days of research, writing, and editing. They understood, and have continuously nurtured and cheered me on. My friends (and I wish I could name them all) have listened to, consoled, and encouraged me through many challenging moments, and celebrated with me in the happiest ones. My thesis committee generously provided the guidance I needed to see this project through. My patient and compassionate advisor, Dr. Kate McQuiston, spent countless hours wading through drafts, and consulting in person. Through her wisdom and writing expertise I was able to achieve far better results than I could have accomplished on my own. Dr. Abigail Fine provided perspectives, from the initial proposal through the final product, which changed the nature of my thesis, and greatly aided my writing process in general. In addition to his assistance with this project, Professor Laurence Paxton has guided me through two vocal performance degrees, and, as department chairperson, constantly looked after me during my thirteen years of learning.

  • Playhouse on the Square Programs Collection
PLAYHOUSE ON THE SQUARE PROGRAMS COLLECTION Processed by Joan Cannon Memphis and Shelby County Room Memphis Public library and Information Center 2008 PLAYHOUSE ON THE SQUARE PROGRAMS COLLECTION The Playhouse on the Square Programs Collection was donated to the Memphis Public Library and information Centers by several individuals over many years. The programs were then gathered together to create this collection. Playhouse on the Square was formed when $30,000 from Overton Square was provided for renovation of the 2121 Madison building along with increased funding from the Memphis Arts Council. A production of Godspell was performed at the grand opening on November 12, 1975. Memphis now had a professional theatre after a seven-year hiatus. Beverly Baxter, John Dunavant, Michael Jeter and Larry Riley were among the fine actors who performed during the first season. They later worked in Hollywood and New York. In 1981 Playhouse initiated the intern program. They assist in all phases of production. By 1985 the 2121 Madison building was becoming inadequate. Seating was limited and Overton Square was sold. The old Memphian Theatre, located on Cooper near Union, was available to lease. Instead of leasing, the Theatre was purchased. Money was raised to renovate the building. The opening celebration was held on November 13, 1985 with a production of Gypsy. It was also the inauguration of the newly renovated theatre. In 1990 Playhouse instituted the City’s first independent theatre school. The Theatre was the recipient of the 1990 Governors Award in the Arts. Customers interested in the development of theater in Memphis may also wish to consult the Theatre Memphis Programs Collection, Circuit Playhouse Programs Collection, Memphis Open Air Theater Collection and the Ethel Taylor Maxwell Collection.
