She's a local historian and she shared her expertise with last year's 2rst grade in the spring of 2018 and again this month with this year's 2rst grade. Kids learn about Erving, historical maps, and get to touch centuries old artifacts that would be commonplace in their homes generations ago. It has gotten COLD and winter seems to be right around the corner as we settle into November. Fresh air, exercise and time spent outside affords students a break from the structure of the classroom and time to socialize with peers. Teachers see that students perform best at school when they have an opportunity for vigorous outdoor play. We do get outside whenever possible, so it is important that your child is dressed appropriately for recess every day. A winter jacket, snow pants, mittens, and hat are all essential items for cold weather play. Each school year, the students at Erving Elementary school participate in a bus evacuation drill. When the school buses arrived on Thursday morning, each bus driver gave his/her riders a brief explanation of bus safety rules and regulations. Afterwards, the students were shown ways to exit the bus safely in the event of an emergency. All students from PreK to grade 6 did a wonderful job participating in this exercise and several grade 6 Community Helpers assisted the preschool students as they exited the bus. I want to thank you, Erving Elementary families, for your support of our students and your attendance at school conferences this week. Your participation in your child’s education, and your child’s school, make a tremendous difference in the quality of their education. Conferences provide an opportunity for parents and teachers to work together as a team to ensure success both in and out of school. Have a wonderful weekend! ERVING SCHOOL UNION #28 (Erving, Leverett, Shutesbury, New Salem and Wendell) INCLEMENT WEATHER AND SCHOOL CLOSING INFORMATION WHO IS WATCHING THE WEATHER? The Superintendent and school administrators carefully watch the weather conditions during the snow season. WHERE DO THEY GET THEIR INFORMATION? Our school district staff listens to the weather forecasts. The Superintendent of Schools and Town Road Superintendent test the road conditions on our bus routes. We also contact the local police about road conditions. We must give careful consideration to the most dangerous bus routes in the district. So, even if it looks clear on your street, dangerous conditions may exist in other parts of our district. WHAT FACTORS ARE CONSIDERED WHEN MAKING THE DECISION TO CLOSE SCHOOL? The safety of all district children is our primary concern in making our decision. In deciding whether children will be safe, we look at the following factors: • Information on road conditions from the town’s superintendent of roads and from the police, including whether roads are icy • Time snow starts and the amount of snow • Weather predictions • Building conditions (e.g. whether we have power and heat) • Parking lot conditions • Temperature and wind-chill WHO MAKES THE DECISION? The Superintendent of Schools is responsible for the final decision, based on the above factors and recommendations from the road crews and police. WHEN IS THE DECISION MADE? The Superintendent must make the decision at the earliest possible time so that radio and TV stations can be notified. HOW IS THE PUBLIC NOTIFIED? Radio is the official medium for notifying all students and parents as to whether or not schools are closed because of weather conditions. Tune to the following stations for up-to-date information on school closings. Do not call the school unless it has an emergency weather extension. The safety of your child is first and foremost! The Union #28 school district covers an enormous amount of geography with many terrain variations. Conditions can change suddenly. On days of questionable weather, you are empowered as a parent to make decisions on what is best for your child. 11/5/2019 Step Squad Wednesday Walking Club Permission Slip I give permission for my child, _________________ (please print student’s name), to participate in the Step Squad Wednesday afternoon walking group on _________ (this Wednesday’s date) from 1:30-2:30PM.
