In November, we celebrated National Rad Tech Week. I hope that all of you were recognized in some manner at your place of work.

I took it upon myself to offer (1) Category A CE to the RT’s in my area. A few months ago, the ASRT sent an email offering to review a live lecture at no charge. The one stipulation was that it had to be presented during NRTW. So, I asked an ISRT colleague if she would do a presentation and then submitted all required documents to ASRT. A short time later, I had an approval letter and was on my way to giving my fellow workers a free CE.

As you know from my speech at the recent Annual Conference Business Meeting, I am very passionate about the many Rules of Ethics set forth by the ARRT. I also have taken an active part in our efforts to spread the word about the CARE Bill and to solicit support from Indiana’s Representatives in Washington.

Kellie Hart, M.S.R.S., RT(R)(BD) gave her presentation on “Radiation Safety in the Cardiac Cath Lab”. My objective was to educate my co-workers on what the ISDH says about who can and who cannot perform duties of the RT in a cath lab. We have a few nurses in our lab that obtained the Limited Cardiac Cath Radiography Certificate when they were allowed to be “grand-fathered” in 2007 under the new law. Although they have the certificate, no one really understood what it means.

The law itself is just too long to discuss here, but I am providing a link for you to read it on the ISDH web-site. The highlights of this law, are as follows: The healthcare worker must be employed in a cardiac cath lab. The healthcare worker must enroll and pass a state approved course in radiation safety. This certificate is not transferrable to any area outside of a cardiac cath lab. They cannot actuate radiation, i.e., no actual imaging. They cannot do anything other than the responsibilities listed in the law. Again, they cannot use this certificate to do anything outside of the cardiac cath lab.

So, what can they do? They can assist the MD during a procedure, whether it is diagnostic or interventional. They can set machine parameters and position the patient and x-ray tube. (Remember, no activating of radiation) They can reset the fluoroscopic timer. They can develop images. They can print images. They can assure proper radiation protection for the patient and staff in the room.

In 2010, members of the ISRT met with the Medical Radiology Services Program Director for the ISDH, to update that law. I always hear from people, “What is the ISRT doing for me?”; the ISRT’s work on this law is one example of our consistent efforts to protect patients, RT’s, and our jobs. Visit http://www.in.gov/isdh/files ProgramAdvisoryCCRC.pdf to review information about the Cardiac Catheterization Radiography Certification Program.

Please show your support by contacting me for volunteer opportunities. It takes numbers of people to get laws passed, Just by being a member of the ISRT, your number helps.

Many RT’s argue that they are members of the ASRT, great! The ISRT is an affiliate of the ASRT. Without the support of their affiliates, the ASRT would not have the numbers to continue their great work on the CARE Bill. I ask you to consider renewing or becoming a member of the ISRT because this is the foundation for many, many projects that affect all of us.

Let us know how you celebrated NRTW.
