THE BUCHAREST UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMIC STUDIES The Faculty of International Business and Economics The Department of Modern Languages and Business Communication of ASE Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj- Napoca 7th International Conference: Synergies in Communication Bucharest, Romania, 22 - 23 November 2018 BEHIND THE SCREENS: A STUDY OF THE FILMS OF THREE INDIAN WOMEN DIRECTORS Minouti NAIK1 Abstract Indian films, even after 76 years of independence and 105 years of Indian Cinema, are a predominantly male domain. The percentage of women film makers, in the industry, is a mere 9.1%. Despite this, the films directed by women have compelled audiences to take notice, because of the wide spectrum of issues they have touched upon. Three women directors, whose movies have left an indelible mark on the audiences, include Tanuja Chandra, Meghna Gulzar and Gauri Shinde. This paper analyses the work of these three women directors, for the uniqueness of their themes and the characters they have sketched, and attempts to find out, what has led to their films being etched deeply, into the consciousness of their audience. This will be analysed against the backdrop of the realities of the society from which these films emerge, and as a reflection of the gender dynamics existing in Indian society. Keywords: Indian cinema, women, themes, characters, uniqueness 1. Introduction Men have sight, women insight. - Victor Hugo Victor Hugo‟s observation, penned down in his memoirs, might be an apt point to begin with, when one reflects upon films made by Indian women filmmakers. Despite films forming a very important facet of the Indian society and the fact that India completed 105 years of cinema, this year, the number of women making films in India is very small.

  • Setting the Stage: a Materialist Semiotic Analysis Of
SETTING THE STAGE: A MATERIALIST SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF CONTEMPORARY BENGALI GROUP THEATRE FROM KOLKATA, INDIA by ARNAB BANERJI (Under the Direction of Farley Richmond) ABSTRACT This dissertation studies select performance examples from various group theatre companies in Kolkata, India during a fieldwork conducted in Kolkata between August 2012 and July 2013 using the materialist semiotic performance analysis. Research into Bengali group theatre has overlooked the effect of the conditions of production and reception on meaning making in theatre. Extant research focuses on the history of the group theatre, individuals, groups, and the socially conscious and political nature of this theatre. The unique nature of this theatre culture (or any other theatre culture) can only be understood fully if the conditions within which such theatre is produced and received studied along with the performance event itself. This dissertation is an attempt to fill this lacuna in Bengali group theatre scholarship. Materialist semiotic performance analysis serves as the theoretical framework for this study. The materialist semiotic performance analysis is a theoretical tool that examines the theatre event by locating it within definite material conditions of production and reception like organization, funding, training, availability of spaces and the public discourse on theatre. The data presented in this dissertation was gathered in Kolkata using: auto-ethnography, participant observation, sample survey, and archival research. The conditions of production and reception are each examined and presented in isolation followed by case studies. The case studies bring the elements studied in the preceding section together to demonstrate how they function together in a performance event. The studies represent the vast array of theatre in Kolkata and allow the findings from the second part of the dissertation to be tested across a variety of conditions of production and reception.

Copyright 2018 Debojoy Chanda RACIALIZING WHITE RESIDUES: SEDITIOUS ANGLO-INDIANS AND OTHERS BY DEBOJOY CHANDA DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2018 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Anustup Basu, Chair Associate Professor Susan Koshy Associate Professor Manisha Basu Associate Professor James Hansen ii ABSTRACT My dissertation interrogates the discursive residues of the notorious colonially instituted Anglo-Indian question in decolonized India. To problematize these residues, I structure my dissertation as a fragmented genealogy of default colonial and post-colonial perceptions of Anglo-Indians as sexually and racially ‘fallen.’ Via this piecemeal genealogy, I ultimately argue that Anglo-Indians inhabit what Anglo-Indian anti-racism activist Cedric Dover would call mongrel bodies. These bodies, given their infinite and indeterminate racial intermixture, are in a state of continual flux, thus defying reduction to a question in firmly delineable terms of race. Complicating the Anglo-Indian question further, I read into some figurations of ‘fallen’ Anglo-Indians from the genealogy, retrieving traces of acts by which these figurations protested their condensation into a racial question. As I show, these figurations did so by performing the intermixed character of their mongrel bodies at levels that included biopolitics, law, gender, citizenship, literature, censorship, and language. Examining these performances of intermixture, I suggest that in the final reckoning, the unavoidable factor of racial indeterminacy should be perceived as straddling not only Anglo-Indians but all groups. The end of the decolonized Indian nation-state, I accordingly gesture, is to recognize mongrelism as an inevitable phenomenon— one that fractures closed categories of race and community.

  • Gender Discourse in Elections: Constructing a Constituency?
GENDER DISCOURSE IN ELECTIONS: CONSTRUCTING A CONSTITUENCY? Dr Rainuka Dagar In the struggle for electoral numbers in coalition politics within an identity sensitive society, gender interests have been taken as synonymous with women’s reservation in Parliament. The connectivity between women’s electoral performance and development outcomes remains to be established. Yet, the clamour for increasing women’s political presence continues in the rarefied well of the Indian Parliament. No doubt, the national political leadership post- Independence has evolved with a select strand of women, but why do political parties want more women to stand for elections now? Is it because women will better utilise public resources for women’s interests? Has the electorate become partial to women candidates? Or does women’s presence increase a party’s secular and diverse credentials? Are women leaders more judicious in allocation of resources, protection of citizen rights or the promotion of development? It is in the backdrop of parliamentary elections that this article will explore the linkages between the Indian democratic polity with representation of women, and that of the electoral discourse on gender with women’s development and gender justice. The gender discourse in Indian electoral politics can be traced to two broad themes: of inclusion and social equity. Both concerns relate to the protection and promotion of women as a vulnerable group. While the substantive content of inclusion remains unchanged, the changing socio-political context from pre-Independence to the 21st century shifted the stance on women’s representation within decision-making bodies. The issue of social equity, on the other hand, evolved as the concepts of gender rights and equity in governance evolved globally.
