    “Between the Creeks” Gwen Pettit This is a compilation of weekly newspaper columns on local history written by Gwen Pettit during 1986-1992 for the Allen Leader and the Allen American in Allen, Texas. Most of these articles were initially written and published, then run again later with changes and additions made. I compiled these articles from the Allen American on microfilm at the Allen Public Library and from the Allen Leader newspapers provided by Mike Williams. Then, I typed them into the computer and indexed them in 2006-07. Lois Curtis and then Rick Mann, Managing Editor of the Allen American gave permission for them to be reprinted on April 30, 2007, [email protected]. Please, contact me to obtain a free copy on a CD. I have given a copy of this to the Allen Public Library, the Harrington Library in Plano, the McKinney Library, the Allen Independent School District and the Lovejoy School District. FAIR PARK HISTORY Fair Park is a 277-acre park campus located in Dallas, Texas. Fair Park is approximately three (3) miles southeast of downtown Dallas and is registered as a Dallas Landmark and National Historic Landmark. Fair Park hosted the Texas Centennial Exposition in 1936 and most of the Art Deco Buildings were built in preparation for the celebration of Texas’ Centennial. The State Fair began in 1886 on land donated to the City of Dallas. Over the years the Park has grown to include many cultural institutions including performance venues, museums and sports stadiums. The historic Cotton Bowl sits majestically inside Fair Park serving as one of the identifiable landmarks that populate the landscape. The Hall of State and the Tower Buildings evoke historic milestones and reflect the many cultures inhabiting Texas. BACKGROUND In 2017 & 2018 the City of Dallas fostered a competitive process to determine which non-profit organization, with experience and intent, would manage Fair Park as a Private Professional manager. Fair Park First was selected through a lengthy evaluation, review, and public process to become the City of Dallas’ partner.     Art Deco at Fair Park Fair Park is home to one of the greatest concentrations of early 20th century Art Deco exposition buildings in the world. For the Texas Centennial Exposition and World's Fair of 1936, a total of fifty structures were erected. Twenty -one of those survive today, including the centerpiece of the entire project, the Hall of State. Enjoy learning the history of Art Deco, touring the art and architecture of Fair Park, and discovering some of the episodes from history that inspired the vision of Hall of State architect Donald Barthelme. Teacher’s Materials Teacher’s The Origins of Art Deco The term Art Deco comes from the 1925 Paris Ex- hibition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (which translates to the “International Exhibi- tion of Decorative and Industrial Arts”). The exposition was dedicated to the display of modern decorative arts, exhibiting the work of thousands of designers from all over Europe. Several countries sponsored pavilions, deco- rative temporary buildings that housed exhibits showcas- ing the splendors of their national culture. The exposition attracted over 16 million visitors, marking the high point of the first phase of Art Deco. The Primavera Pavilion, inspired by African thatched huts. The host city played a very large role in the exhibition. Following the devastation wrought by the Great War, Europe entered a rebuilding era, and France was determined to lead the way. Parisi- ans had traditionally been trendsetters in fashion and the arts, and once again they sought to be the world leaders in style. The exhibition helped to es- tablish the preeminence of French taste and luxury goods.

    The Hall of State: A Symbol of Texas History “The great moments of yesterday have given us Today” Introduction The story of the Hall of State began in 1935 as the people of Texas planned different ways to celebrate the 1936 Centennial. The 44th Legislature created a commission to spearhead various Centennial projects that included a memorial shrine at the Centennial Exposition in Dallas, Texas. Designed by Houston architect, Donald Barthelme, at a cost of $1,200,000, the monument was to be “dedicated to the four centuries of Texas history, heroism, and achievement under the flags of six nations, enduring and inspiring in its patriotic symbolism.” Doorway to Knowledge The Hall of State (or, as it was originally known, the State of Texas Building1) was constructed in 1936 by the State of Texas to commemorate the Texas Centennial. It is one of the nation’s great historical centers and reflects the physical, social and economic development of our region at that time. The structure mirrors not merely the political evolution of a Spanish province that became a State in the Union through the creative enterprise of immigrants and through trial by battle, but also the amazing natural resources – plant, animal and mineral – which made that development possible. 1 Plaque on building exterior. Building Shape The Hall of State was built in the symbolic form of an inverted capital “T” by the State of Texas to commemorate the Texas Centennial of 1936.     FP-031 Hall of State The building before you is considered the grandest in all of Fair Park – some even say in all of Texas. The Hall of State was built in 1936 for the Texas Centennial Exposition. It is one of the 30 historic structures in Fair Park that remain from that fair. The building cost 1.2 million dollars to construct, a sum made all the more remarkable when you consider this was during The Great Depression. Step inside the Hall of State and you will step into a glorious world of art and history that is sure to make your jaw drop. Dominating the Great Hall is a spectacular gold medallion featuring a Lone Star surrounded by coats of arms symbolizing the six governments that have held dominion over Texas during its history. Murals on both walls display finely rendered scenes from Texas history. Other rooms, named after different regions of the state, contain sculptures and murals that pay tribute to cowboy culture, Texas families, and Texas before and after the discovery of oil, as well as other Texas icons. Meanwhile, the Hall of Heroes contains stunning sculptures of six early Texas leaders: James Fannin, Mirabeau B. Lamar, Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston, Thomas Rusk and William Travis. The interior also houses the offices of the Dallas Historical Society. At times, portions of the society’s collection are on view and the space sometimes hosts special exhibitions, such as the artifacts of legendary Dallas Cowboys coach, Tom Landry. The library has on hand some 8 thousand rare books, 13 thousand artifacts and numerous other items of interest to researchers.
