Spain I. Introduction “The flag is the embodiment, not of sentiment, but of history. It represents the experiences made by men and women, the experiences of those who do and live under that flag.” Woodrow Wilson1 “FLAG, n. A colored rag borne above troops and hoisted on forts and ships. It appears to serve the same purpose as certain signs that one sees on vacant lots in London—‘Rubbish may be shot here.’” Ambrose Bierce2 The power of the flag as a national symbol was all too evident in the 1990s: the constitutional debate over flag burning in the United States; the violent removal of the communist seal from the Romanian flag; and the adoption of the former czarist flag by the Russian Federation. In the United States, Texas alone possesses a flag and seal directly descended from revolution and nationhood. The distinctive feature of INSIDE / SOMMAIRE Page both the state flag and seal, the Lone Star, is famous worldwide because of the brief Editor’s Note / Note de la rédaction 2 existence of the Republic of Texas (March 2, 1836, to December 29, 1845).3 For all Solid Vexillology 2 the Lone Star’s fame, however, there is much misinformation about it. -

“Between the Creeks” Gwen Pettit This is a compilation of weekly newspaper columns on local history written by Gwen Pettit during 1986-1992 for the Allen Leader and the Allen American in Allen, Texas. Most of these articles were initially written and published, then run again later with changes and additions made. I compiled these articles from the Allen American on microfilm at the Allen Public Library and from the Allen Leader newspapers provided by Mike Williams. Then, I typed them into the computer and indexed them in 2006-07. Lois Curtis and then Rick Mann, Managing Editor of the Allen American gave permission for them to be reprinted on April 30, 2007, [email protected]. Please, contact me to obtain a free copy on a CD. I have given a copy of this to the Allen Public Library, the Harrington Library in Plano, the McKinney Library, the Allen Independent School District and the Lovejoy School District. Tom Keener of the Allen Heritage Guild has better copies of all these photographs and is currently working on an Allen history book. Keener offices at the Allen Public Library. Gwen was a longtime Allen resident with an avid interest in this area’s history. Some of her sources were: Pioneering in North Texas by Capt. Roy and Helen Hall, The History of Collin County by Stambaugh & Stambaugh, The Brown Papers by George Pearis Brown, The Peters Colony of Texas by Seymour V. Conner, Collin County census & tax records and verbal history from local long-time residents of the county. She does not document all of her sources. -

FAIR PARK PROSPECTIVE FUTURE TENANTS REQUEST FOR INFORMATION DALLAS, TEXAS Fair Park First is seeking Request for Information (RFI) from organizations interested in opportunities for tenancy at Fair Park. This RFI is intended to attract business owners and institutions who share a common vision and innovative ideas for activating Fair Park. Proposals will be considered for uses such as recreational, civic, cultural, educational, entertainment, arts, retail, food and beverage, and other park activating uses. FAIR PARK HISTORY Fair Park is a 277-acre park campus located in Dallas, Texas. Fair Park is approximately three (3) miles southeast of downtown Dallas and is registered as a Dallas Landmark and National Historic Landmark. Fair Park hosted the Texas Centennial Exposition in 1936 and most of the Art Deco Buildings were built in preparation for the celebration of Texas’ Centennial. The State Fair began in 1886 on land donated to the City of Dallas. Over the years the Park has grown to include many cultural institutions including performance venues, museums and sports stadiums. The historic Cotton Bowl sits majestically inside Fair Park serving as one of the identifiable landmarks that populate the landscape. The Hall of State and the Tower Buildings evoke historic milestones and reflect the many cultures inhabiting Texas. BACKGROUND In 2017 & 2018 the City of Dallas fostered a competitive process to determine which non-profit organization, with experience and intent, would manage Fair Park as a Private Professional manager. Fair Park First was selected through a lengthy evaluation, review, and public process to become the City of Dallas’ partner. Our team comprised of Spectra, Biederman Redevelopment Ventures (BRV), In The City For Good and Fair Park First was selected and awarded the contract on October 24, 2018. -
Art Deco at Fair Park
Art Deco at Fair Park Fair Park is home to one of the greatest concentrations of early 20th century Art Deco exposition buildings in the world. For the Texas Centennial Exposition and World's Fair of 1936, a total of fifty structures were erected. Twenty -one of those survive today, including the centerpiece of the entire project, the Hall of State. Enjoy learning the history of Art Deco, touring the art and architecture of Fair Park, and discovering some of the episodes from history that inspired the vision of Hall of State architect Donald Barthelme. Teacher’s Materials Teacher’s The Origins of Art Deco The term Art Deco comes from the 1925 Paris Ex- hibition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (which translates to the “International Exhibi- tion of Decorative and Industrial Arts”). The exposition was dedicated to the display of modern decorative arts, exhibiting the work of thousands of designers from all over Europe. Several countries sponsored pavilions, deco- rative temporary buildings that housed exhibits showcas- ing the splendors of their national culture. The exposition attracted over 16 million visitors, marking the high point of the first phase of Art Deco. The Primavera Pavilion, inspired by African thatched huts. The host city played a very large role in the exhibition. Following the devastation wrought by the Great War, Europe entered a rebuilding era, and France was determined to lead the way. Parisi- ans had traditionally been trendsetters in fashion and the arts, and once again they sought to be the world leaders in style. The exhibition helped to es- tablish the preeminence of French taste and luxury goods. -

This chapter contains beautiful copies of paintings by his early influences, the Europeans Turner and Corot, but ALLIE VICTORIA TENNANT also paintings by artists who followed Reaugh, for example, Alexandre Hogue and Melissa Miller. This book rightfully promotes the idea that Reaugh was, indeed, the “Dean of Texas Artists.” His works and those of his students and the students of those students are prized by collec tors throughout the United States. Cummins is the Guy M. Bryan Light Townsend Cummins’ biography of one of Professor of American History at Austin College the park’s most significant artists, Allie Tennant. in Sherman, and he served as the State Historian Even today, no one can visit Fair Park without of Texas from 2009-2012. Belfiglio The Texas War for Independence erupted with the Battle of Gon zales on October 2, 1835.' Centralist forces had renounced the Mex ican constitution and established a dictatorship. The Texas settlers, meanwhile, developed grievances. They desired to retain their English language and American traditions, and feared that the Mex ican government would abolish slavery. Texans also resented Mex ican laws which imposed duties on imported goods, suspended land contracts, and prohibited American immigration. At first the Americans were bent on restoring the constitution, but later they decided to fight for separation from Mexico. Except for research by Luciano G. Sociology Study, November 2016, Vol. 6, No. 11, 706‐712 D doi: 10.17265/2159‐5526/2016.11.004 DAVID PUBLISHING The Effect of Art Music on Pompeo Coppini: Greatest Sculptor of Texas Monuments* Valentino Belfiglioa Abstract Art music has the ability to communicate, entertain, and inspire other artists. Opera is a dramatic multimedia genre which fuses solo and choral singing with instrumental accompaniment, dance, staging, costumes, scenery, and libretto. This multimedia approach can inspire painters, sculptors, poets, writers, and other musicians in their works. Italian opera greatly inspired Pompeo Coppini—the Italian sculptor. In particular, scenes and arias by Verdi and Puccini correlate with specific tasks involved in the creation of a monument. In creating the Alamo cenotaph, Coppini often played Gioacchino Rossini’s opera, “William Tell” (1829) correlating the sacrifices made by Texans for their independence at the Alamo (1836) with the sacrifices made by Swiss patriots in their independence from Austrian tyranny. This case study suggests that art music can enhance creativity and visual attention among artists of all genres.
