Learning in its widest form is at the heart of all that we do. Through our academic curriculum, the extensive range of enrichment activities and our pastoral support system, we aim to develop in pupils an enthusiasm for learning as well as the necessary skills to enable them to fulfil their academic potential to become good citizens as well as thoughtful and responsible individuals. Bassaleg is an English medium, mixed 11-18 comprehensive school. The catchment area is that covered by the High Cross, Marshfield, Mount Pleasant, Pentrepoeth and Rogerstone Primary Schools.The number of pupils on roll is approximately 1750, of whom 450 are in the Sixth Form. Education is essentially a partnership between a number of interested parties and we particularly value the role that you as parents can play in this relationship. Overview Paul Murphy MP was appointed as Oxbridge Ambassador to establish the reasons behind the decline in Welsh applications and admissions to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The final report builds upon the findings of the interim report that was published in December 2013, and takes into account all of the feedback received to date. The report summarises the findings of the project based on an analysis of relevant data and a broad consultation with students, teachers and other key stakeholders. The report identifies some of the main issues around raising standards, boosting self-esteem and sharing best practice in building up our most able and talented young people, presents recommendations to address them and identifies areas of effective practice. Newport City Council Objection Report Proposal to increase the overall capacity of Bassaleg School from 1,747 to 2,050 with effect from September 2023 Purpose This report is published in line with the requirements of Section 42 of the School Standards and Organisation (Wales) Act 2013 and the School Organisation Code, November 2018. This is a summary of the statutory objections and the Council’s response to those objections. The objections and responses set out in this report must be given due consideration when the Council takes a decision on the determination of the proposal. Publication of the Statutory Notice Following the Formal Consultation period and the publication of a consultation report, the Cabinet Member for Education & Skills took the decision to proceed to publish the proposal to increase the overall capacity of Bassaleg School from 1,747 to 2,050 with effect from September 2023, by way of a statutory notice for 28 days from the 3rd March 2021 to the 1st April 2021. The 2013 Act requires that anyone wishing to make objections to a school organisation proposal has the opportunity to do so. Two formal objections have been received: one from a local resident and another from the Residents Committee of Court Crescent and Forge Lane. Concerns have also been raised by another local resident and by Graig Community Council. Although these concerns have not been submitted explicitly as formal objections to the proposal, they are included within this report for completeness and transparency. The table that follows summarises each of the objection points lodged by each of the proposal objectors. -

The prospect of Christmas cheers us and lifts our spirits away from the cold, dark and depressing weather of the season. Spiritually, we have been preparing the students for Christmas in our Advent assemblies, form reflections and in Mini Bac time during form period. There is a host of charity work that has been undertaken including forms gathering some quite remarkable food hampers for those in our community do not have the some of the basics that many of us take for granted during the festive season. The kindness and generosity of our pupils and families never ceases to amaze me and I was delighted to hear from our Business Manager, Mr Rowland, that the school has raised over £25,000 for charitable causes over the last 3 years. It is our duty to proclaim Christ’s birth and to ensure that the real message of Christmas is at the Serving God Through forefront of our hearts rather than the worldly commercialism that seems to begin Learning Together earlier and earlier each year and detracts from the true meaning of Christmas. I believe we have lived this during the season of Advent here at the school. What Is Newport's Approach to Re-Purposing Schools? to Stay
What is Newport’s Approach to Re-purposing Schools? To stay safe and get through this together by: 1. Supporting our community in providing childcare for key workers to the best of our ability and where there is no viable alternative. Eligible parents of mainstream school children who are currently in Reception to Year 7 can apply for a place for childcare provision that will begin on Wednesday, 25th March 2020. Places should not be requested for children who, based on government advice, should be self-isolating or socially distancing. These applications must be resubmitted every two weeks. This will allow those who are exiting social isolation to potentially access a place and enable schools to adjust their provision as their own staffing availability changes. Eligibility is: • Single parents who are employed as specific key workers • Where both parents are employed as specific key workers Due to the limited capacity of schools, initially places will only be considered for the following key worker groups: • Health and Social Care • Education and Childcare • Public Safety and National Security Once there is a clear picture of the demand and availability of places, other key worker groups will be considered. Children will need to bring a packed lunch except those eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) who will be given lunch. Pupil transport will not be available during this period unless it is for a specific child who is accessing transport to Maes Ebbw School or Ysgol Bryn Derw. Schools will not be delivering formal learning but are operating a childcare facility. Parents can apply for a two-week place in the cluster provisions using a standard form sent to the following email address: [email protected] The application form is available from Newport City Council Website from Saturday March 21st 2020.
