This restriction note is located in Box 1. Language: English Processing: David Reed, Nancy Gower Finding Aid Revisions: Andrew Wong, June 2018 2 Biography Born Patricia Parkhurst in 1931 in Bangor, Maine, this Pentecostal historian found the Lord at the age of 8 and his baptism at 13 through the ministry of her pastor, Clifford Crabtree and special preacher, George Chambers. Her marriage to her first husband, a Oneness Pentecostal, brought her into UPC circles, and during his decline in health she participated in the Word of Faith movement. A Pentecostal all her life, she began collecting books and tracts and doing interviews with “older saints” while doing research for her pastor Jim Peters who was writing a book on the Pentecostal movement in Maine, Prevailing Westerlies, published in 1988. She and her second husband Carroll volunteered at Zion Bible Institute in Barrington, RI, where they met Mary Campbell Wilson. Using her developing skill as a research assistant and word processor, Patricia Pickard helped Mary Campbell Wilson complete Obedience of Faith, the biography of Christine Gibson, founder of Zion Bible Institute, published in 1993. During the 1990’s she published a newsletter for the Newburgh Center Pentecostal Church, Newburgh Eftsoons. Then as part of her duties as administrative assistant for “Door of Faith” radio program in Bangor, she also put out a newsletter entitled Simply Divine. During the 1990’s she also wrote 7 tracts and in commemoration of her church’s 70th anniversary authored a book entitled Voices of Pentecost in Bangor, Maine. She also continued to tape interviews with older Pentecostal saints as time allowed. Since 1998 she has been the archivist at Zion Bible Institute. Having developed a passion for collecting Pentecostal historical documents, she augmented her own growing archives with the materials gathered by Mary Campbell Wilson, consisting of “Zion Bible Institute material” and other Pentecostal papers. Through the years she has shared her materials with scholars and publishers also interested in collecting Pentecostal history. Her autobiography, Patricia Pickard, A Peek Into the life of Patricia Pickard, reflects her broad acquaintance with persons across the various branches of the Pentecostal tradition. The collection contains a wide variety of research notes, sermon notes, pamphlets and tracts as well as a significant collection of books on Pentecostalism and related topics. It is particularly rich in materials documenting Pentecostalism in New England and New Brunswick. 3 Scope and Content Patricia Pickard, a lifelong Pentecostal from Bangor, Maine, has been an avid collector of Christian materials for many years, with particular interest in the Pentecostal movement in New England and New Brunswick. She also collected a wide range of material from other Christian sources, including 19th century writings. The Collection includes copies of newsletters and interviews that report on the early Pentecostal Revival in northern Maine and New Brunswick, as well as a number of personal diaries with Sermon Notes, recording a wide range of Pentecostal preachers over the years. Subjects: Maine (United States) Oneness Pentecostalism Zion Bible College Arrangement The Collection is classified into three series. Because the primary value of the Collection is Pentecostalism in New England, the order of the Series reflects that priority. • Mihajlo Pupin and Father Vasa Živković
Mihajlo Pupin and father Vasa Živković DRAGOLJUB A. CUCIĆ Regional centre for talents “Mihajlo Pupin”, Pančevo, Serbia, [email protected] Summary There is often a bond between two great men of a society at the time when one is at the peak of his life and the other at its beginning. The great Serbian 19th century poet, clergyman and educator father Vasa Živković, interceding in favour of his student Mihajlo Pupin, significantly influenced the conditions necessary for Pupin`s development into the person he later became. Mihajlo Pupin was certainly not the only student to benefit from father Vasa Živković advice and material support. However their relationship is a perfect example of an acclaimed person successfully influencing a person yet to win acclaim. Key words: Mihajlo Pupin, father Vasa Živković, Pančevo, secondary school1, parish, scholarship, Prague. Introduction Many books, studies and papers were written about Mihajlo Pupin and many national and international symposiums were dedicated to his life and work. Inspite of everything that was achieved in bringing to light Pupin`s life and work there are still insufficiently explored periods filled with important events and influences. The reason to adventure into this work is the educational character of discovering talent in the pupils and giving necessary support throughout the adversity of growing up. Many talents have disappeared in the everyday of life for the lack of support when it was most needed. Supporting the talented students does not ensure that their talent would be successfully developed. Many factors need be fulfilled before this is achieved: diligence, health, good fortune ..

  • Spaces of Performance: by Rachel Meade Smith Considering Event, Agency and Routine1
Spaces of performance: by rachel meade smith Considering Event, Agency and Routine1 This selection of entries threads together diverse takes on the space of performance, including notable mo- ments and individuals within traditional performance design (scenography), and spatial and social concepts related to diverse notions of “performativity.” The topic of performance is broadly defined in this work, encompassing interpretations relating to live arts, social and political performance. By putting in conver- sation these alternately explicit and implicit notions of performance, I propose that space and design are distinct actors in both traditional performance and the performance of everyday life and everyday agency. This proposition begs the question of how designers can implement performative thinking towards creating experiences of engagement, agency, and an interactive public life. I can take any empty space and call it a bare stage. A man walks across this empty space whilst someone else is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of theater to be engaged. —Peter Brook, The Empty Space PLOT(S) 014 issue 2 ADOLPHE APPIA Swiss scenographer Adolphe Appia is heralded as one of the first practitioners to critically consider design’s agency in staged performance. Rejecting the over- ly spectacular and 3D illusory sets that had dominated popular theater since the Renaissance, Appia proposed a modernist paradigm wherein design attended to the relation between actors’ movements, light, and sound, as opposed to the goal of realist representation. Working with famed compos- er Richard Wagner, Appia’s designs aligned with the ideal of gesamtkunstwerk, the total work of art.
