The Almohad Hierarchy in the Reign of Ibn Tumart Masatoshi KISAICHI Ibn Tumart時 代 の ア ル モ ハ ー・ド ・ ヒ エ ラ ル ヒ ー 私 市 正 年 The Almohad Hierarchy in the Reign of Ibn Tumart Masatoshi KISAICHI The purpose of this paper is to try to examine what is called `the Almohad hierarchy' in the reign of Ibn Tumart from a point of view ,of the governmental structure . In his reign, almost all of the Almohads were organized in the Almohad hierarchy which had the characters and the functions as follows : (1) Ibn Tumart was on the top of the Almohads as an absolute chief. ② al- 'Ashara (The Ten), that is, Ibn Tumart's ten confidants, being the first to recognize him as Mahdi. They formed the council which discussed all matters of great moment were under the Mahdi. (3) al-Khamsun (The Fifty), that is, fifty representatives of the Almo- had tribes, forming the grand assembly of the Almohad community which discussed matters of less importance. They were intermediaries between Ibn Tumart and the tribes. ④ The Talaba and the Muff az, being missionaries. The Huff a; were the boys studying the Qur' an and the Almohad doctrine and becoming the Talaba. ⑤ The AN al-Dar, being the chamberlains who served Ibn TUmart days and nights. ⑥ The Almohad tribes equal to the list of al-Qattan : Hargha, Ahl Tinmallal, Jadmiwa, Janf isa, Hintata, Ahl al-Qaba' il. Most of the Almohad soldiers were composed of them. ⑦ The Jund, that is, regular soldiers, being constituted of the forei- gners who came from the towns with Ibn Tumart, but their scale -85- オ リ エ ン ト 第22巻 第1号 (1979) was small. ⑧ The Ghuzat, apparently being the special military groups of boys. は じ め に 12-13世 紀 に か け て,マ グ レ ブ,イ フ リキ ヤ,ア ン ダ ル シ ア の 一 帯 を 支 配 下 にご治 め た ム ワ ッ ヒ ド朝(1130-1269)はIbn Tumart(1091頃-1130)の 宗 教 的 ・政 治 的 運 動 を 土 台 と し て い る 。 そ れ は タ ウ ヒ ー ド(神 が 唯 一 で あ る こ と) の 教 義 を 説 く こ と か ら,ム ワ ッ ヒ ド(タ ウ ヒ ー ドの 教 義 の 信 者)運 動 と 呼 ば れ る 。 彼 は1121年 か ら1130年 ま で の9年 間(彼 の 生 地Ijillizで3年, Tinmallal で6年),宣 教 と ム ラ ー ビ ト朝 打 倒 を め ざ して 運 動 を 展 開 す る が,そ の 間 に 彼 の 下 に 結 集 した 人 々 や 諸 部 族(ム ワ ッ ヒ ド集 団)の 組 織 化 を 行 な っ た 。 そ れ が ア ル モ ハ ー ド ・ヒ エ ラ ル ヒ ー と呼 ば れ る組 織 で あ る 。 こ う し て ム ワ ッ ヒ ド集 団 に 属 す る 者 は,何 ら か の 形 で 組 織 化 され た 。 と こ ろ で,こ の 組 織 に つ い て は そ の 重 要 性 が 強 調 さ れ る 反 面,曖 昧 な 点 が 多 い 。Roger Le Tourneauは そ の 理 由 と し て,史 料 の 不 明 瞭 さ と 史 料 相 互 の 矛 盾 した証言の二つをあげてい るが,従 来 の研究方法の中に もこの問題を曖昧に してい る原因があ る。 この組織 は,Ibn Tumartに よって創始 され,そ の後あ る組織は解体 ・消滅 し,ま た改 良され,さ らにい くつかの組 織が付け加え られ, 全体 と して大 き く変 ってい ったが,王 朝末期 まで存続 した。それ故,こ の組織 全体 の正 しい性格や役割 の分析,位 置づけはIbn Tumartの 時代 か ら王朝の 崩壊 までの時代 を通 して分析す る ことに よって初めて可 能 とな るものであ る。 それに もかかわ らず,従 来 の研究 では,個 々の組 織を時期,時 代 に分 け ること に 十 分 な 注 意 を 払 わ な か っ た り(J.F. P. Hopkins, R. Le Tourneau),(ch. A.     The Question of ‘Race’ in the Pre-colonial Southern Sahara BRUCE S. HALL One of the principle issues that divide people in the southern margins of the Sahara Desert is the issue of ‘race.’ Each of the countries that share this region, from Mauritania to Sudan, has experienced civil violence with racial overtones since achieving independence from colonial rule in the 1950s and 1960s. Today’s crisis in Western Sudan is only the latest example. However, very little academic attention has been paid to the issue of ‘race’ in the region, in large part because southern Saharan racial discourses do not correspond directly to the idea of ‘race’ in the West. For the outsider, local racial distinctions are often difficult to discern because somatic difference is not the only, and certainly not the most important, basis for racial identities. In this article, I focus on the development of pre-colonial ideas about ‘race’ in the Hodh, Azawad, and Niger Bend, which today are in Northern Mali and Western Mauritania. The article examines the evolving relationship between North and West Africans along this Sahelian borderland using the writings of Arab travellers, local chroniclers, as well as several specific documents that address the issue of the legitimacy of enslavement of different West African groups. Using primarily the Arabic writings of the Kunta, a politically ascendant Arab group in the area, the paper explores the extent to which discourses of ‘race’ served growing nomadic power. My argument is that during the nineteenth century, honorable lineages and genealogies came to play an increasingly important role as ideological buttresses to struggles for power amongst nomadic groups and in legitimising domination over sedentary communities.

    1 The Moroccan Colonial Archive and the Hidden History of Moroccan Resistance Maghreb Review, 40:1 (2014), 108-121. By Edmund Burke III Although the period 1900-1912 was replete with numerous important social upheavals and insurrections, many of which directly threatened the French position in Morocco, none of them generated a contemporaneous French effort to discover what went wrong. Instead, the movements were coded as manifestations of supposedly traditional Moroccan anarchy and xenophobia and as such, devoid of political meaning. On the face of it, this finding is surprising. How could a French policy that billed itself as “scientific imperialism” fail to consider the socio-genesis of Moroccan protest and resistance? Despite its impressive achievements, the Moroccan colonial archive remains haunted by the inability of researchers to pierce the cloud of orientalist stereotypes that occluded their vision of Moroccan society as it actually was. For most historians, the period of Moroccan history between 1900 and 1912 is primarily known as “the Moroccan Question.” A Morocco-centered history of the Moroccan Question was impossible for Europeans to imagine. Moroccan history was of interest only insofar as it shed light on the diplomatic origins of World War I. European diplomats were the main actors in this drama, while Moroccans were pushed to the sidelines or reduced to vulgar stereotypes: the foolish and spendthrift sultan Abd al-Aziz and his fanatic and anarchic people. Such an approach has a degree of plausibility, since the “Moroccan Question” chronology does provide a convenient way of structuring events: the Anglo-French Accord (1904), the landing of the Kaiser at Tangier (1905), the Algeciras conference (1906), the landing of French troops at Casablanca (1907), the Agadir incident (1911) and the signing of the protectorate treaty (1912).

The Persistence of the Andalusian Identity in Rabat, Morocco Abstract This thesis investigates the problem of how an historical identity persists within a community in Rabat, Morocco, that traces its ancestry to Spain. Called Andalusians, these Moroccans are descended from Spanish Muslims who were first forced to convert to Christianity after 1492, and were expelled from the Iberian peninsula in the early seventeenth century. I conducted both ethnographic and historical archival research among Rabati Andalusian families. There are four main reasons for the persistence of the Andalusian identity in spite of the strong acculturative forces of religion, language, and culture in Moroccan society. First, the presence of a strong historical continuity of the Andalusian heritage in North Africa has provided a dominant history into which the exiled communities could integrate themselves. Second, the predominant practice of endogamy, as well as other social practices, reinforces an intergenerational continuity among Rabati Andalusians. Third, the Andalusian identity is a single identity that has a complex range of sociocultural contexts in which it is both meaningful and flexible.

It continues to be spoken by some old immigrants from Morocco in Israel and France. It was particularly used as a second language by Jewish men and women in hundreds of bilingual rural and semi-rural communities scattered in the High Atlas and Anti-Atlas ranges and their valleys, as well as in the large Sous Valley in southwestern Morocco (Fla- mand 1959), and in the communities of Ghardaïa and their dependencies in Southern Algeria. In the villages of those areas, Jews lived in either small Jewish quarters or in isolated streets in the immediate proximity of the Berber popula- tion, or in mixed streets, where some Jewish families inhabited houses or rooms that Muslim Berbers rented to them in exchange for certain services. Jews used Berber and Jewish Berber (in addition to Judeo-Arabic) for petty commerce and other professional activities conducted among their Berber clientele.

One continuing presence since antiquity is that of the Berbers, or the Imazighen, the indigenous population of the area. In this article an attempt is made to shed light on the status of the language and culture of the Imazighen, and in particular on the recent calls for official recognition of the Amazigh language in the constitutions of the two 59 countries with the highest presence of Imazighen, namely Morocco and Algeria. Although some recent developments, like the teaching of the Amazigh language in primary schools, give reason enough to be optimistic about the future of the indigenous language and culture, a closer look at the ideological background of pan Arab-nationalists casts doubts on any serious government intentions to guarantee the maintenance and development of the Amazigh language and culture. This ideology will be brought to light by contrasting the constitutional rights that some Muslim and/or African countries grant to their citizens who speak different languages than the official one(s). Inherited zircon cores from the Aghbar trachytic sill and from the Bou Madine rhyolitic dome have been shown to be of Statherian age (ca. 1600–1800 Ma) and Palæoproterozoic (>2100 Ma) age, respectively, suggesting that a significantly older protolith underlies the Pan-African rocks in the Central and Eastern Anti-Atlas. Granodiorites and rhyolites from the Saghro–Imiter area have similar low 87Sr/86Sr (0.702–0.706) and 143Nd/144Nd (0.5116–0.5119) initial ratios, suggesting a mixture of mantle and lower crust sources.
