Ghosts of Ned Kelly: Peter Carey’s True History and the myths that haunt us Marija Pericic Master of Arts School of Communication and Cultural Studies Faculty of Arts The University of Melbourne November 2011 Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts (by Thesis Only). Abstract Ned Kelly has been an emblem of Australian national identity for over 130 years. This thesis examines Peter Carey’s reimagination of the Kelly myth in True History of the Kelly Gang (2000). It considers our continued investment in Ned Kelly and what our interpretations of him reveal about Australian identity. The paper explores how Carey’s departure from the traditional Kelly reveals the underlying anxieties about Australianness and masculinity that existed at the time of the novel’s publication, a time during which Australia was reassessing its colonial history. The first chapter of the paper examines True History’s complication of cultural memory. It argues that by problematising Kelly’s Irish cultural memory, our own cultural memory of Kelly is similarly challenged. The second chapter examines Carey’s construction of Kelly’s Irishness more deeply. It argues that Carey’s Kelly is not the emblem of politicised Irishness based on resistance to imperial Britain common to Kelly narratives. Instead, he is less politically aware and also claims a transnational identity. The third chapter explores how Carey’s Kelly diverges from key aspects of the Australian heroic ideal he is used to represent: hetero-masculinity, mateship and heroic failure. Carey’s most striking divergence comes from his unsettling of gender and sexual codes. -

Ned Kelly's Last Words: “Ah, Well, I Suppose”
Ned Kelly’s Last Words: “Ah, Well, I Suppose” Dr. Stuart E. Dawson ∗ (Monash University) Abstract: It has long been widely, even admiringly, held that Ned Kelly’s last words before execution were “Such is life”. This is a key part of a prevalent Kelly mythology that has been subject to little serious critique. Yet the attribution of the phrase ‘Such is life’ to Kelly is pure fiction. Analysis of the reportage of the day reveals Kelly’s actual last words, and explains how they were transmuted by one journalist into the catchy expression quoted as fact by many historians. It shows that the image of Kelly standing tall and defiant, saying ‘Such is life’ as the rope was placed around his neck, is nothing but a highly romanticised myth. In fact, Kelly came to an ignominious, mumbling end on the scaffold, a far cry from popular legend. Murtuka yirraru: Automobility in Pilbara Song Poem Nick Smith La Trobe University - Anthropology & Sociology, Bundoora, Victoria, Australia Abstract Arguably one of the most enduring icons of modernity is the automobile. The innumerable songs about motor vehicles are testimony to this status. This article examines Pilbara Aboriginal (marrngu) songs about the murtuka (motorcar). Focussing on a particular style of song known as yirraru to Ngarla people of the De Grey River area in Western Australia, I explore a range of questions concerning the impact of automobility on marrngu life-worlds. Is the ‘freedom of the road’ a value historically shared by marrngu and walypala? Or is the marrngu passion for automobility evinced in these yirraru simply an adaptation of pre- colonial values, beliefs and behaviours associated with mobility? This is not an ethnomusicology article; I treat yirraru as narratives, narratives that convey something about the relational in marrngu modes of orientation and engagement with the motor vehicle. Using archival and ethnographic data I argue that murtuka song-poems show that marrngu regarded motor vehicles as instrumental in their own efforts for autonomy in the decades in which these yirraru originate (1920–1960s). Ultimately I consider what the enthusiastic embrace of the murtuka by marrngu might say about the nature of socio-cultural difference, similarity, and marrngu and walypala boundedness in the Pilbara. -

What Was the 1946 Pilbara Strike?
So what was the 1946 Pilbara Strike? 75 years ago, on May 1, 1946, hundreds of Aboriginal workers began walking off dozens of pastoral stations across the vast Pilbara region to fight for wages and better living conditions. Committed Aboriginal leaders had for months secretly travelled to stations all over the Pilbara to alert Aboriginal workers to the strike, timed to take place just before shearing began in May. After a hard-fought three-year struggle, the strikers finally achieved their original aim of ‘30 bob a week’, as well as establishing their own communities independent of the previous domination of ‘pastoralist, policeman and native welfare officer’. The Strike was supported ‘down south’ by church and women’s groups, lawyers, unions, and the Australian Communist Party: the WA Government’s hand was finally forced in July 1949, when the Fremantle-based Seamen’s and Lumpers’ Unions voted to black ban wool from Pilbara stations still holding out against the Aboriginal strikers’ demands. The Pilbara Strike movement reshaped colonial race relations in WA and helped to inspire later and better-known acts of Aboriginal resistance like the 1966 Wave Hill walk off in the Northern Territory and the 1980 Noonkanbah blockade in the Kimberley region. Since then, the 1946 Pilbara Strike has been recognised by the ACTU as the longest strike in Australian history, and has been regularly commemorated by WA unions at their annual May Day event on Fremantle Esplanade. This May Day weekend we invite you to join us and members of the Pilbara Strike families in Fremantle to honour the courage and determination of the strikers, and commemorate this pivotal, yet little known event in our shared history. -

Like many expatriate Australian writers who have produced works of fiction and non-fiction abroad, these two iconic Australian writers used their international experience to expand the ‘imaginative map of Australia’ (Clunies Ross 90). As Paul Genoni and Tanya Dalziell point out, the sojourn of the two writers on Hydra over a nine-year period is ‘one of the most mythologised episodes in Australian literary history’ (Genoni and Dalziell 1). Their lives, and their experiences on the island, are well documented and have inspired biographies, fiction, photo-essays, a play, and an upcoming feature film. -

Aboriginal Heroes
ABORIGINAL HEROES The 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum and the 25th anniversary of the Mabo Decision, offers an opportunity to celebrate some of the Aboriginal Australians who have dedicated their lives to justice and rights for their people throughout the twentieth and twenty- first centuries. Significant national and Western Australian Aboriginal heroes and their legacies have been explored in this section. A list of the major committees and councils that some were involved in along the way also provides further information about their tireless work and campaigning. 74 WILLIAM COOPER (1861-1941) William Cooper was a Yorta Yorta man from Victoria who was born on 18 December 1860. He was heralded as a hero and one of the earliest campaigners and activists for Aboriginal rights and justice in Australia’s history. William spent most of his life in the Cummeragunja community working as a pastoral labourer in slave-like conditions, where he was a spokesman for the Yorta Yorta in their ongoing battles for land justice against the New South Wales government. As well as leading the first Aboriginal deputation to a Commonwealth Minister in 1934, and the first deputation to the Prime Minister in 1938, William started petitions for Aboriginal representation in Parliament, enfranchisement and land rights. Despite gaining 1,814 signatures on the petition for representation in Parliament, it failed. Dissatisfied with the Commonwealth in regard to the lack of progress around this issue, William then wrote a letter to King George V stating ‘to prevent the extinction of Courtesy AIATSIS, Jackamos.A04.BW, N03746_04a. the Aboriginal race, better conditions for all, grant us power to propose a member of parliament’. -
Ralph Rashleigh
Ralph Rashleigh BARRY ARGYLE AMES TUCKER'S novel, Ralph Rashleigh,1 divides into four parts: experience in England, convict life, adventures with J bushrangers, and adventures among aborigines. There is no plot to the novel ; its four parts are held together by the presence of the hero, whose name, Rashleigh, summarises his character in the way that Roderick Random's does in Smollett's novel. Of Smollett's novel, The Oxford Companion lo English Literature says 'much of the story is repulsive'; and the same can be said of Tucker's. This is not its only interest, but it is an important one. The novel deals with a repulsive period in Australia's history ; but unlike Caroline Leakey's The Broad Arrow2 or John Lang's The Convict's Life,3 it deals with that period as though it mattered. The only predictable aspect of Tucker's novel is its form: this is eighteenth century picaresque, its emblem the open road. There are several possible reasons for this old-fashioned air. The first is that early Australia was in much the same condition as England often appeared to the educated metropolitan in the eighteenth century. Beyond the roads and tracks there was little but trees, hills, scrub, and the fear that accompanies the unknown. A further reason for the similarity between eighteenth century novels and Tucker's is Tucker's wish to tell his English readers, even those few who were members of the Port Macquarie Literary Club and Tucker's first audience in 1845, of the variety of Australian conditions.
