By Dana Gauruder Sports Editor The men s basketball team faces one of the toughest and roughest teams in the country when they host Georgetown Mon - day at 8p m in the Hartford Civic Center. The Hoyas ranked 14h in the nation .enter the contest with a 16-6record (6-3n the Big East )Georgetown lost its last game at home against St Johns. 75-69.dropping the Hoyas to fourth place in the conference . While Georgetown has played very well for a teairi which has few upperclassmen on its roster .the team s success has been overshadowed by a combative playing style and an outlaw reputation. Several games involving the John Thompson coached Hoyas have been marred by fisticuffs and bench clearing incidents. Elbowing and shoving have become as routine as shooting and reboudning in Georgetown contests. One of the reasons for the violent atmosphere surrounding Hoya contests is their aggressive full court press defense. ^ Another explanation is that the Hoyas have -become a team that fans of other teams love to hate. Fans expect and even encourage their favorite teams to get into a rough and -tumble game with Georgetown . Georgetown s success last season also brings out a feverish pitch from opposing fans and players .A win against the NCAA runnerup could be the highlight of the season for some teams including UConn. The Huskies failed in their first attempt to upend the Hoyas this season .UConn lost 74-53to Georgetown in a game which was closer than the score indicated .UConn led early in the game and the score was tied at halftime . The Huskies biggest task will be to stop 7-0 sophomore Pat Ewing .With the graduation of shooting guard Eric Floyd .coupled with the added maturity Ewing has gained .he has taken a much larger offensive role this season. The Hoya center is averaging 16.6 points per game and also leads all Big East Conference players with a 10.2rebounding per contest. Ewing has had plenty of help from his teammates .Fred Brown . Bruce Kuczenski lays the ball in against Pitt George Edwards photo ).

who will always be remembered for the pass he threw to a North Carolina player which killed Georgetown s championship hopes. is the starting point guard. His backcourt partner, freshman Michael Jackson, has increased his scoring production in recent contests and is second in the conference in free throw percentage. Joining Ewing in the frontcourt are 6-5 freshman David Wingate and 6-7sophomore Bill Martin Guard Eugene Smith and forward Anthony Jones are prominent substitutes .while Ralph Dalton spells Ewing. The Huskies .meanwhile, have not played since last Tuesday when they lost to Vlllanova , 86-79.UConn enters the game with a 9-11 record (2-7in the Big East ). Backcourtmen Karl Hobbs,Earl Kelley .and Vern Giscombe will have the responsibility of breaking Georgetown s full -court pressure.Hobbs .who is fifth in the conference in assists.and Kelley .who ranks ninth in point scoring .will start for UConn.
