L'étape DU TOUR DE FRANCE 2020: a Major First Un Nice for the 30Th Nice, October 3rd 2020 L’ÉTAPE DU TOUR DE FRANCE 2020: A major first un Nice for the 30th Key points: ➢ The date for the 30th edition of the Étape du Tour de France has been reserved for 5th July 2020. One week after the professionals, the amateur riders will follow the roads of the 2nd stage on the Tour de France, over a distance of 177 km, starting and finishing in Nice. ➢ In the history of the Étape du Tour de France, it is both the first loop stage and the first to be ridden along the coast. However, during their trek, the 16,000 amateur cyclists expected will twice climb to more than 1,500 metres above sea level on the Col de la Colmiane and Col de Turini. ➢ Bernard Thévenet will be ambassador of the Étape du Tour de France and the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2020 in Nice. ➢ Registration opens on 21st October at 16.00 on the time to web site. When the Tour de France takes on a southern accent, mountainous stages can be found on the route right from the start. This will indeed be the case in 2020 with the Grand Départ in Nice taking advantage of the Southern Alps from as early as the second stage. The loop-shaped route will be taken several days after the elite riders by the amateur cyclists who sign up for the Étape du Tour de France. Naturally, it is a challenge made for the climbers among the 16,000 participants expected, because over 177 kilometres of racing the expedition will gobble up a total upward gradient of 3,570 metres. Following the start on the Promenade des Anglais, the participants will draw energy and inspiration from the magnificent setting of the Gorges de la Mescla in the Tinée Valley, before tackling the climb up to the Col de la Colmiane, where Simon Yates was victorious on the 2018 edition of Paris- Nice. Next they will ascend the Col de Turini where Colombian Egan Bernal scored his first success on French roads in the following year’s race. To complete the festival of climbing, the route finishes with the ascent of the Col d’Eze, a landmark of the Race to the Sun, on top of which Eddy Merckx, Joop Zoetemelk and Sean Kelly sealed their victories in the 1970’s and 80’s. The 2020 edition of the Étape du Tour will provide many riders with the opportunity to enjoy a stay on the French Riviera. While the keenest will have already been through the relief in the countryside around the city during the Paris-Nice Challenge (on 14th March 2020), which has been organised in the region since 2016, a much more ambitious format is on offer in July. The base of the race will be located in the city centre, where the race village will take up residence for 3 days. The finishing line will also be located in Nice, symbolising the moment of deliverance and accomplishment for all the brave riders to cross it.     Terugblik op de carrière van ex-profwielrenner Matthijs de Koning. De finish van de Tour de France is op zondag 29 juli geweest. Veel renners hebben om allerlei redenen de finish niet bereikt. Het uitrijden van de belangrijkste wielerwedstijd van het jaar is op zich al een prestatie van formaat. Matthijs de Koning, Scherpenzeler en voormalig beroepswielrenner, heeft dit in het verleden ook eens gepresteerd. Oud Scherpenzeel blikt terug op de carrière van deze Scherpenzeelse ex-topsporter. Matthijs de Koning wordt op 18 maart 1949 geboren op de Willaerlaan in Scherpenzeel. Hij is de jongste uit een gezin van vier kinderen. Matthijs heeft één broer en twee zusters. Zijn vader werkt bij bandweverij “De Driekleur”. Als Matthijs zes jaar is, verhuist het gezin naar de Plataanlaan, waar Matthijs zeventien jaar woont. Op jonge leeftijd gaat Matthijs, die in die tijd Matti wordt genoemd, voetballen bij voetbalvereniging Scherpenzeel. Met leeftijdsgenoten worden na schooltijd en in de vakanties wielerwedstrijdjes gehouden. Met hen gaat Matthijs ook bij de Tour de Junior in Achterveld kijken. Geïnspireerd door de prestaties van andere Scherpenzelers bij dit wielerevenement doet hij in 1964 voor de eerste keer op een gewone fiets mee aan deze wielerwedstrijd. Om het volgende jaar op een echte racefiets te kunnen meedoen, gaat Matthijs een paar uur in de week als kegelopzetter in Hotel Café “De Zwaan” aan het werk. Voor 95 gulden koopt hij zijn eerste tweedehands racefiets. Hiermee wint hij in 1965 de Tour de Junior in de leeftijdscategorie van 16-jarigen. Zijn ouders gaan ervan uit dat hiermee een einde is gekomen aan de wielerloopbaan van Matthijs, omdat hij het volgende jaar vanwege zijn leeftijd niet meer in de Tour de Junior mag starten.

But Herrera man- aged to cling on and by the foot of Alpe d’Huez he was alongside Fignon. Herrera attacked and reeled in Hinault before going on to win the stage at the Alpine colossus’ summit, joining the likes of cycling legends Fausto Coppi and Joop Zoetemelk as win- ners on Alpe d’Huez. Herrera, officially still an ama- teur, went on to finish the race 27th overall as Fignon won his second Tour-a year later Hinault would take revenge but France has not had a Tour winner since. The Colombian star would enjoy many more great days in cycling, winning the 1987 Vuelta a Espana and that same year earning his best finish in the Tour-fifth.

Jumbo-Visma’s Van Emden does not start. After an intense stage yesterday, the peloton rolls along together at a steady pace. Fifteen, 20, and 35 kilometres into the race, the riders seem to be holding off their attacks. After one hour of racing, the average speed is 37.500 km/h. Groupama riders are in prominent position at the front of the bunch, but the pace is steady. The situation remains unchanged 40 and 45 km into the race: the peloton is still all together. Intermediate Sprint (Umm-al-Quwain – km 51.3) Dekker claims the first intermediate sprint ahead of Milan, Cattaneo and Gallopin. The peloton returns to a steady pace immediately afterwards. Seventy kilometres into the race, the peloton is still packed, although the speed has picked up a little. Average speed after two hours of racing: 39.400 km/h. Ineos, Deceuninck, Bora and UAE rotate at the front, but the peloton is not splitting. At the -100 km marker, all is calm. We are starting to see some action, as Bidard and Le Gac clip off at km 117, immediately opening up an advantage. At the first time recording, they are 25” ahead of the bunch; at km 119, the gap rises to 45”, and is further up to 1’05” at km 122.

That would make a good trivia question at the cycling club’s annual dinner, and it’s sure to provide fodder for unending debate. Think about it: How many of us in America know enough cycling history to even come up with five good names? Sure, you could list the men who have won five Tours de France: Anquetil, Merckx, Hinault, and Induráin. (I’m omitting Armstrong, whose seven victories were officially annulled.) But that’s only four names. And Le Tour, of course, is only one race. Most of us don’t know our cycling like we know our baseball. Any baseball fan past infancy knows the names Ruth and Gehrig, Mantle and Mays, Clemens and Bonds. But American cycling fans would be hard- pressed, I think, to remember — let alone spell — the names Joop Zoetemelk and Roger de Vlaeminck. Both of those men, as it turns out, probably belong on any list of all-time greats. Zoetemelk was a Dutch ironman who started and finished the Tour 16 times (and won it once). De Vlaeminck was a Belgian steam engine who won the brutal Paris-Roubaix four times, the marathon Milano-Sanremo three times, and Tirreno-Adriatico, the Race of the Two Seas, six times. I know all of this thanks to CyclingRanking.com, a well-researched and well-documented site that attempts to list, in order, the greatest professional men’s cyclists of all time.The site is a labor of love by a Dutch family that started out as a kitchen-table exercise in the 1970s, and it will humble even the most studious cycling fans.
