Charlotte ’s Christmas Update

My 4 months in Australia has gone so fast. I've seen a lot of things and

have really enjoyed my time. At the start I ran from the city to the sea .

. with my host mum, it was a lot of fun and I was proud to have run c c 14km. I've also started doing competitions at athletics, I enjoy it.

n

n At the start of my holiday I went to Tasmania with Terry and Ann (my I

I

host parents.) I found Tasmania beautiful and different to .

We've been to a lot of places and it’s been interesting, I really had a n n good time with my host parents.

o

o

I've also done the color run, it was the best run I've done in my life! All the people threw colours at me, it was really d d fun. I've been to the beach with my friends a lot and also meet some student exchange. When I have nothing to do in

the afternoon I go to the squash court with my host dad. I'm never bored. I've already had a Christmas party with n

n Ann's family, it was so great! e

e s

s Now I've moved families and I'm at Grant and Margie's house. They live in Mount Macedon, it's really pretty. I have

s really enjoyed myself in Australia, my exchange is just perfect. s

Remembering Tony Charlton AM

Veteran broadcaster Tony Charlton passed away on 17 December 2012. Tony

. was at the forefront of radio and television broadcasting in Australia for over .

60 years and will be well remembered as the voice of Melbourne’s Dawn c

c Service broadcast each . Tony was also a highly valued and respected n

n member of the Rotary Club of Hawthorn and the following is a summary of his I

I ‘Member behind the Badge’ address given on 3 May 2011.

n Tony began with an early reflection as an eight year old growing up in n

Perth. He had the good fortune to witness the last match played by Don o o Bradman’s Australian team before it sailed onto England to contest, sadly, the

d last Ashes series before World War II. He had the thrill of seeing Don Bradman d

in action and was lucky enough to obtain the great man’s autograph and that n n of Stan McCabe. In addition he was able to photograph Bradman in the nets

with a Box Brownie camera. These early experiences clearly had an impact on

e e

the future direction of young Tony.

s

s s s The Charlton family moved to Melbourne after the war where Tony’s father took up a senior position in

E broadcasting. Tony followed after finishing his education in Perth and must have soaked up the combination of

E

broadcasting and sport which filled the family home in Middle Park. f f

After captaining the 1st Eleven at school, we heard about Tony’s ambition to become a test cricketer. Unfortunately, he was

o

o

not good enough. If he couldn’t play sport at the top level, how would the vacuum be filled? An unlikely answer evolved –

radio. b

b u

u His father assisted in getting Tony a job at 3AW. He worked with Fred Tupper who was the breakfast and racing l l announcer who by the way called the English Derby in 1950 which was won by Galcador. When Norman Banks joined

3AW the station became a football station and has remained so ever since. Norman Banks chose Tony as his assistant

C

C

calling VFL football.

y

y Tony was by now mixing with our top sportsmen and women and mentioned numerous high profile names without r

r reference to notes. These included John Coleman, Jack Fingleton, Jack Brabham, Walter Lindrum who provided a a

a personal demonstration of his fabulous billiard skills, Herb Elliot, Jack Kramer, Jesse Owens and Ian Johnson, who was t t secretary of the MCC for 27 years.

o

o We heard of some ground breaking solutions to televising sport in an era of no satellites, no microwave links, black and R

R white images and no computers to generate graphics. One idea involved trailing an aerial from an aircraft circling over

Nhill picking up pictures transmitted from the England Australia Test Match in Adelaide, relaying them onto Melbourne e

e and then onto via co-axial cable. It was a world first.

h

h And it happened again. When Arnold Palmer and Gary Player were in Melbourne, Tony with Don Laurence of the

t t

Melbourne Herald organised a Golf exhibition match at Victoria Golf Club. The visitors pitted their skills against Peter

f Thomson and Kel Nagle in a remarkable match in which Arnold Palmer three putted the 18th to lose! The American was f

so taken with the mobile coverage in which the picture was never lost that he asked for the technical plans – which he o

o was given – and took them back to the USA.

r

r One of Tony’s great achievements was to be Master of Ceremonies for the “Caltex Sports Star of the Year” presented in e

e every capital city for a span of 30 years. Major newspapers in 6 states judged on a month by month basis a state by t

t state sports star culminating in state finals. t t

The Charlton name has had a long association with the MCC. He has been involved with the 150th anniversary

e

e l

l celebrations, the dinner to mark the completion of the redevelopment program, the unveiling of the first electronic

s scoreboard, the opening of the Great Southern Stand, the inauguration of both the cricket Hall of Fame and the AFL Hall s of Fame and the commissioning of the 10 amazing sculptures which adorn the outside perimeter of the stadium as the

Parade of the Champions.

w w

e e Tony has also been honoured to give eulogies for such luminaries as Ian Johnson, Keith Miller, Ian Ridley and Clive

Fairbairn. N N Tony Charlton AM 28 March 1929 – 17 December 2012

u A Christmas Question…….. l

l C

C Q: Why is Christmas just like a day at the office?

y

y A: Because you do all the work and the fat guy in the suit gets all the credit. r

r a

a t

t Santa's Bad Day o

o One Christmas season a long time ago, Santa was getting ready for his annual trip, but there were problems R

R everywhere. Four of his elves were sick and the trainee elves did not produce the toys as fast as the regular

ones so Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule. Then Mrs. Claus told Santa that e e her Mother was coming to visit. This stressed Santa even more.

h

h He went to harness the reindeer but found that three of them were about to give birth and two had

t

t

jumped the fence and escaped. More stress. f

f o

o Then when he began to load the sleigh one of the boards cracked and the toy bag fell to the ground and

scattered the toys. Feeling very frustrated, Santa went into the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of r

r rum. e

e t

t When he opened the cupboard he discovered that the elves had hidden the liquor and there was nothing t

t to drink. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the empty cider pot and it broke into hundreds of little

e

e pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom but found that mice had eaten the straw end of l

l the broom. s s

Just then the doorbell rang and a highly irritable Santa trudged to the door. He opened the door, and there w

w stood a little angel with a huge Christmas tree. e

e

The very cheerful angel said, "Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn't it a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. N N Where would you like me to stick it?"

Thus began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree.
