Dean’s Notes By Ann Labounsky, FAGO, ChM - Dean ([email protected]) Now as you receive this April newsletter written during a very cold day at the beginning of March, I trust that your Holy Week and Easter services have given much inspiration to your parishioners. It’s not too late to sign up for one of the AGO exams. (April 1 is the deadline) John Walker gave us such a wonderful boost at the last AGO program. We have a very difficult profession and everyone gets into various sorts of ruts ‐‐ i.e. "General 4 must add the mixtures." It is important to keep growing and thinking in new ways. The AGO certification program is very helpful in promoting our continuing education. Someone once asked me why we don’t have compulsory continuing education requirements in the way the Certified Public Accountant have. We could ask my husband, Lewis Steele, about that. In any case whether it’s this year or next, plan to make this very visible sign of your personal education a priority. Have you registered yet for the Region III convention? I am looking forward very much to it and hope to see many of you there. It is a great relief to have an impressive slate of new AGO officers. Consider carefully which candidate would be the most beneficial to our chapter. I was fortunate to have only a two year responsibility as Dean and not as SubDean and then Dean. Each officer brings new perspectives and builds on the legacies of previous Deans. Thank you officers and the nominating committee for all that you do and this time especially to Alan Lewis who continues to be a valued colleague and wonderful support. Soli Deo Gloria.

Voting This Month For New Officers Chapter elections will be held in April. Biographies of all candidates are in this newsletter for your review. Please see the note from the Chapter Secretary on page 3 that discusses the voting process this year.

Pedals Pipes and Pizza and Upcoming Opportunities By Mark Nurnberger - ([email protected]) & Suzie Gilliland ([email protected]) On Saturday, March 9, the Pittsburgh Organ Academy (POA) sponsored a "Pedals, Pipes and Pizza" event at Church of the Redeemer in Squirrel Hill. Nathan Carterette was our host and he demonstrated the instrument at the church and then narrated a musical story that Ann Labounsky played to demonstrate the sounds of the organ. Then the group watched a video of Richard Szeremany demonstrating the instrument at East Liberty Presbyterian Church. They were able to go into the organ chamber to see the pipes and the organ works. It was a nice day of learning for all of the participants which included two existing POA Scholarship students as well as others. Please spread the word that auditions will be held for scholarships to Levels I (Beginning Student) and Level II( the Continuing Student), on Saturday, April 6, from 10am –Noon at Berkeley Hills Lutheran Church, 517 Sangree Road, Ross Township. Auditions for Level III( post high school or adult) and Level IV ( undergraduate students : both organ majors and non‐majors) can submit a taped audition by April 15, 2013. For questions of more information please contact Mark Nurnberger at 412.486.0550 or [email protected] . We are fortunate as a chapter to have the resources to offer these scholarships, but we must have students to audition and then use the resources available. April Meeting - Musings On Music By Alan J. Lewis - Chapter Sub-Dean (sub- [email protected]) Menu for From the middle of Lent, as I write this, our April meeting April Meeting feels a long way away, but it’ll be here in no time, with the scent of spring flowers on the air and fading echoes of Easter Family‐style Salad, rolls & butter A Choice of Satays: music in our ears. May we all have found space and time, in Minted Lamb or Turkey, Cranberry & Pine Nut the days between now and then, to prepare ourselves and the Jasmine Rice with Basil & Orange other musicians we work with to offer our very best on this central feast of the Assorted Vegetables Christian calendar. Lemon Pound‐cake with Berries Those fond of predictability will be glad to know that our April meeting is back on the Fourth Monday of the month, April 22. It takes place at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Carnegie (330 Third Avenue, Carnegie, PA 15106‐2519) —just a short drive out I‐376 beyond the Fort Pitt Tunnel. As part of our business meeting after a delicious meal prepared by our caterer, Cindy Bowen, we’ll vote on the next cohort of Chapter leadership—an important time for us as we prepare to host the 2015 Regional Convention. Then we’ll enjoy a brief performance by two of our Pipe Organ Academy students on the church’s fine organ, recently built by the Philadelphia‐area organ‐builder Patrick J. Murphy. The floor will then be opened to an address by a very distinguished guest. English organist Martin Neary, LVO, served at for fifteen years, and at Westminster Abbey for a decade after that. Since 1998, he has enjoyed an international career as an organist and conductor, with regular appearances in various parts of America, including on‐going associations with a number of choirs across the nation. Having heard him play in the Organ Artists Series on the Sunday evening, we will have the opportunity to hear him reflect on a long and illustrious career in music—a career that has witnessed (and in some important ways embodied) the winds of change that have blown through sacred music and music‐making in general over the past five decades. Please, don’t miss the chance to partake of his wit and wisdom first‐hand.
