Arthur Conan Doylen luomat mielikuvitukselliset salapoliisiseikkailut nousivat suuren yleisön suosioon erityisesti eksoottisten rikostapaustensa ansiosta, ja Sherlock Holmes –teollisuus elää ja voi hyvin niin televisiossa, Hollywoodissa kuin kirjallisuudessakin. Vähemmälle huomiolle on kuitenkin jäänyt kirjojen paikoin räikeäkin rasismi, ja tutkimuskysymykseni onkin selvittää mitkä poliittiset ja sosiaaliset paineet vaikuttivat Holmes-seikkailujen muukalaiskuvaan. Britti-imperiumille 1800-luvun loppu oli suurten muutosten aikaa, ja nämä muutokset jättivät jälkensä myös siihen miljööseen jossa Sherlock Holmes asuu ja harjoittaa ammattiaan. Maahanmuutto aikaansai levottomuukisa varsinkin suurkaupunkien slummikortteleissa, ja buurisotien tapiot järkyttivät brittien uskoa englantilaisen ihmisrodun ylemmyyteen, jota oli totuttu pitämään peräti tieteellisenä faktana. Rikostapauksissa ulkomaalaiset olivat aina ensimmäisten epäiltyjen joukossa, ja lombrosolainen rikosantropologia yritti todistaa rikollisten olevan fyysisiltä ja henbkislitä ominaisuuksiltaan valtaväestöä vajavaisempia. Ajatukset ihmisrotujen mahdollisesta degeneraatiosta sekä toisaalta rodunjalostuksesta eugeniikan keinoin saavuttivat laajaa huomiota sivistyneistön joukossa. 1900-luvun alkuvuosikymmenet toivat mukanaan myös seuraavan suuren muutoksen, Euroopan laajuisen suurvaltapoliittisen jännitteen, joka kulminoituin ensimmäiseen maailmansotaan. Poliittisten paineiden kasvaessa Saksa alettiin kokea uhkana ja Britannian asema maailmanpolitiikassa muuttui entisestään. Kaikki nämä historialliset vaikuttimet jättivät jälkensä myös Sherlock Holmes –sarjan hahmoihin. Holmes ohittaa tavanomaiset rikolliset itselleen turhan vähäpätöisinä, ja keskittää huomionsa nimenomaan erikoislaatuisiin yksilöihin. Tarinoiden roistojen joukossa onkin suoranaisia raakalaisia, kuten verenhimoine pygmi Tonga, ja pelkurimainen musta nyrkkeilijä Steve Dixie, ja heitä kuvaillaan rasistisesti värittynein sanankääntein. eläimellisiksi tai ali-ihmisiksi. Erityistapauksen muodostavat myös tapaukset joissa uhattuna on viktoriaanisen sosiaalisen järjestyksen kulmakivi, ydinperhe ja pyhimyksenomainen vaimo sen keskuksena. Seuraava huomioarvoisen ryhmä ovat mestaririkolliset, joukostaan ylivertaisena luonnollisesti professori Moriarty. Heissä länsimaisen sivistyneistön älykkyys ja taidot yhdistyvät sisäiseen tai ulkoiseen rappion siemeneen niin, että lopputuloksena onkin rappeutuneen ali-ihmisen sijasta poikkeuksellinen mutta kieroutunut nerokkuus. Moriartyn, eversti Moranin ja paroni Grunerin kaltaiset rikolliset ovat Holmes-tarinoissa harvinaisia, ja heidän kiinnisaamisensa vaatii useimmiten poikkeuksellisia toimia. Viimeinen tarkastelemistani ryhmistä koostuu vieraan vallan agenteista, jotka juonittelevat Engantia vastaan useassa tarinassa. Euroopan poliittinen tilanne kuvataan useassa seikkailussa hyvin epävakaana, ja Holmes toimii johdonmukaisesti Britannian etujen puolustajana. Moderneissa Holmes-tarinoissa tai muussa viihteessä ulkomaalainen ei enää automaattisesti ole vihamielinen ali-ihminen, vaan rikollisus ja muunkaltainen turmelus kuvataan yhä useammin sisäsyntyisenä. Salapoliisi ei enää ole yksinomaan rotupuhtaan nationalismin edustaja, vaikka hän muuten Holmesia muistuttaisikin. We argue that this type of cultural entrepreneurship is a double-edged sword and explain how it may ignite active opposition of offended audiences, as well as attract supportive audiences. We delineate a research agenda to shed light on whether, how, and with what consequences cultural entrepreneurs navigate such a tension — in particular how they 1) mobilize morally tainted cultural resources and with what effect on offended audiences; 2) deal with the consequent legitimacy challenges; 3) transform moral taint into “coolness” to enhance their venture’s distinctiveness. With the recent growth of on-screen adaptations in both film and serial television forms, there is much new material to be analyzed and discussed. However, recent adaptations have begun exploring new reimaginings of Holmes, discarding his beginnings as the Victorian Gentleman Detective to create a much more flawed and multi-faceted character. Using Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original work as a reference point, this study explores how recent adaptors use both Holmes’s diegetic violin performance and extra-diegetic music. Not only does music in these screen adaptations take the role of narrative agent, it moreover serves to place the character of Holmes into the Romantic Genius archetype.     1 Guilty Pleasures: New Hollywood Violence and the 1960s True Crime Cycle Tim Snelson Abstract: This article focuses on a cycle of late 1960s true crime films depicting topical mass/serial murders. It argues that the conjoined ethical and aesthetic approaches of these films were shaped within and by a complex climate of contestation as they moved from newspaper headlines to best-sellers lists to cinema screens. Whilst this cycle was central to critical debates about screen violence during this key moment of institutional, regulatory and aesthetic transition, they have been almost entirely neglected or, at best, misunderstood. Meeting at the intersection of, and therefore falling between the gaps of scholarship on the Gothic horror revival and New Hollywood’s violent revisionism, this cycle reversed the generational critical divisions that instigated a new era in filmmaking and criticism. Adopting a historical reception studies approach, this article challenges dominant understandings of the depiction and reception of violence and horror in this defining period. He suggested that this Anglo-American production cycle had been triggered by the success of Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and Richard Brooks’ ‘equally horrifying’ adaptation of Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood (1967). Titled ‘should we be exploiting the harmonics of horror?’, Todd’s article pinpointed the recently released The Boston Strangler (1968) and in-production 10 Rillington Place (1971), both directed by Hollywood veteran Richard Fleischer, as evidence of the escalating number and morbidity of such films.
