The Outsiders Onesheet.Indd
THE OUTSIDERS CLOSE UP 1xLP The Outsiders, hailing from Wimbledon, England, were one of the many bands to rise up through the UK’s punk explosion of the late 70s. Citing the Velvet Underground as their primary influence, The Outsiders were fronted by Adrian Borland, who went on to form the seminal post-punk band The Sound following the demise of the band. Gaining exposure through opening for acts such as The Jam and The Vibrators. Bob Lawrence (bass) and Adrian Janes (aka Jan, drums) rounded out the band. The Outsiders were the first UK punk band to self-release a full album (their first LP Calling on Youth), on their own Raw Edge label. With Close Up, the band matured and further developed into the punk sound that was clearly a gateway to Borland’s work with The Sound. The band were clearly influ- enced by the Detroit rock sound of The Stooges and were even joined on stage by Iggy Pop himself for their rendition of “Raw Power”. Long out of print on vinyl, this reissue provides a great look into not only the development of the legendary Adrian Borland, but also a look into the transitional phase of CT-208 UK rock from classic to punk. 01. From Independent Record Shops to the Internet: Recorded Music Communities in the Digital Age
AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION STUDIES From independent record shops to the Internet: Recorded music communities in the Digital Age A thesis submitted to Auckland University of Technology in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Lewis Tennant 1 March 2016 Abstract The Internet has altered notions of space and place. This study examines these changes against the backdrop of the independent brick-and-mortar record shop, a location where the transforming power of music has traditionally brought people together. Ideas, opinions, and histories are shared. Musical projects and friendships are formed; the art form of music critiqued. Globally these stores have decreased in numbers significantly since the turn of the 21st Century, particularly affected by the ‘post-Napster’ growth in the online acquisition of music and other media forms. In considering the substantial decline in numbers of brick-and- mortar independent record shops, and in turn what these spaces offer the people who frequent them, this thesis questions how recent technological changes have affected the social interactions of communities that are based on recorded music, also exploring the changing ways in which people engage with recorded music in their everyday lives. In doing so, this study investigates how communities manifest themselves on the Internet, examining in turn what aspects of physical spaces and face-to-face interaction may not be replicated in the online environment. In a series of focus groups and semi-structured interviews, notions of ‘space(s)’ and ‘place(s)’ for modern music communities and subcultures are examined in the context of decreasing numbers of physical spaces to congregate. -
Neopsichedelia UK
MAP MUSIC PAGES Neopsichedelia U.K. -

The authors examine twenty-one of what they believe are the best and most influential bands of the period and provide an annotated list of representative recordings. These artists provide the inspiration and sonic blueprint for much of today’s cutting edge music. Even so, their recordings are often absent from library collections and many librarians and patrons are unfamiliar with them. The groups discussed are Bad Brains, Beat Happening, Big Black, Bikini Kill, Black Flag, Camper Van Beethoven, Dead Kennedys, Fugazi, Galaxie 500, Hüsker Dü, Melvins, Minor Threat, Minutemen, Mission Of Burma, Pixies, R.E.M., the Replacements, Sleater-Kinney, Sonic Youth, Throwing Muses, and Uncle Tupelo. -
