Although our Practice is classified as Very Remote and Rural, we are only 90 minutes drive from Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands, with its shopping, facilities and airport. Plus we are just over an hour from Ullapool, which hosts the ferry service to the Western Isles. Working here has its challenges but is generally less pressured and more varied and rewarding than would be the day to day experience of most GPs. In the interest of attracting the best candidate(s) the post on offer can be flexed to suit your personal circumstances. The job here can work for an experienced GP looking for a change of environment but would equally be a good fit for a recently qualified GP with an interest in rural medicine. This report provides summaries of our fire safety activities, statistical and benchmarking information for the Highland area, and extracts of incidents that occurred between 1 July and 30 September 2013. 1. Community Safety Activity Community Engagement - Activities We promote fire safety and engage with the community through a number of different initiatives, which include working with partner agencies in promoting road safety, addressing anti-social behaviour, and providing fire and road safety advice to the community in general. We undertook a variety of community engagement activities during this quarter, which included: Safe Highlander - Wick We supported the delivery of Safe Highlander in Wick during this quarter with approximately 400 primary school children from schools throughout the area attending. This is a multi agency event attended by representatives from Red Cross, Police Scotland, SSPCA, Drug & Alcohol, Internet Safety as well as the Fire and Rescue Service. It is an educational activity based on a partnership approach, aiming to tackle challenging issues of community safety and crime prevention. Children following the event become more aware of personal safety, potentially avoid becoming victims of crime, understand how to react to emergency situations and encourage good citizenship. Scottish Fire and Rescue Service staff advise and educate pupils to recognise fire hazards in the home and understand what to do in the event of a smoke alarm going off at home and the importance of working smoke alarms and fire action plans.

Tourism Facilities & Visitor Services Baseline Report 2019 Produced as part of the Wester Ross Destination Management Plan preliminary research Context Upwards of an estimated c.100,000 tourists visit Wester Ross each year, sustaining local communities through their input to the local economy and tourism accounts for 35% of employment1. However, in the current climate (Summer 2019) there are concerns that a rise in tourism of up to 27% (estimate2) over the past few years may not be sustainable. Although a different perspective is that this has followed a deep recession in the tourism industry and visitor numbers have yet to return to the high levels enjoyed during the 1990s. The current situation is exacerbated by Local Authority and Public Agency budget cuts which have resulted in plans to close public toilets and a deterioration in road quality. In addition, the type of visitor has changed, Wester Ross is welcoming large amounts of campervans which require waste disposal facilities which are not yet in place. Local people are reporting over-flowing carparks and bins, increasing litter pollution and irresponsible behaviour. It is not unusual for local residents to cite increased litter as a negative aspect of tourism3 and this together with other perceived negative impacts can become challenging to tourism development as the host community begin to view visitors less than favourably. Therefore, the World Tourism Organisation advises regions to adopt a model for tourism management which considers the social as well as economic and environmental impacts of tourism4. Mass tourism is not going away5, and currently, there is no hard-empirical evidence on visitor numbers, expectations and behaviour or condition of assets in Wester Ross which would allow communities, businesses, local authorities and public agencies to plan proactively.

Some 60 people are required to volunteer on or around the day to set the field, erect the tents and stalls and manage the day, be that working on the gate, assisting in controlling the parking or running the actual events. Can you help? The Lochcarron Highland Games is supported by other local events over that weekend, the shinty team with their Friday night dance, see separate advert, another dance on the Saturday night, for those still needing to spend some energy. All money raised does return to the community and since 2014 we have awarded £13,500 to over 13 local organisations, some multiple times. So this year we will run a regular bus service from Lochcarron to Attadale, so leave the car at home. Along with your admission to the Games we also include free entry to Attadale Gardens. All the regular events return including the distinctive, one of a kind Hill Race, track and field events for all ages and increased prize money this year for juniors.
