Then the Carmarthenshire Biodiversity Partnership would like your help. • We are looking for records for the rare Hypocreopsis rhododendri Hazel Gloves fungus. It has recently been found at two sites in the county and more records would be welcome. • H. rhododendri is usually found in the UK on standing dead stems of hazel, but has also been recorded on living and cut hazel branches and living and dead branches of blackthorn, willow and wild rose. Its pale tan, bracket-like appearance with extending finger-like lobes make it very distinctive. • The scientific name of the fungus (Hypocreopsis rhododendri) stems from the fact that it was once found growing on Rhododendron maximum in the USA: it is not found on rhododendron in the UK. • The best time to look for hazel gloves is between August and March, although fruit bodies may still be visible into the summer. • If you find this fungus please get in touch. Scottish Natural Heritage Biodiversity of Dead Wood Fungi – Lichens - Bryophytes Dr David Genney SNH Policy and Advice Officer Scottish Natural Heritage Key messages Scotland is home to thousands of fungi, lichens and bryophytes, many of which depend on dead wood as a food source or place to grow. This presentation gives a brief introduction, for each group, to the diversity of dead wood species and the types of dead wood they need to survive. The take-home message is that the dead wood habitat is as diverse as the species that depend upon it. Ensuring a wide range of these dead wood types will maximise species diversity. Some dead wood types need special management and may need to be prioritised in areas where threatened species depend upon them. ABSTRACT Panamanian montane forests harbor a high diversity of fungi, particularly of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi, however their taxonomy and diversity patterns remain for the most part unexplored. Here we present state of the art fungal taxonomy and diversity patterns at Fortuna Forest Reserve based on morphological and molecular identification of over 1,000 fruiting body collections of macromycetes made over a period of five years. We compare these new results with previously published work based on environmental sampling of Oreomunnea mexicana root tips. We compiled a preliminary list of species and report 22 new genera and 29 new fungal species for Panama. Based on fruiting body collection data we compare the species composition of ECM fungal communities associated with Oreomunnea stands across sites differing in soil fertility and amount of rainfall. We also examine the effect of a long-term nitrogen addition treatment on the fruiting body production of ECM fungi. Finally, we discuss the biogeographic importance of Panama collections which fill in the knowledge gap of ECM fungal records between Costa Rica and Colombia. -

Phylogenetic analyses of the combined internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of ribosomal RNA gene and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1-α) sequences show that the new species forms a distinct lineage separating it from other Porodaedalea species.
