34/ The Third Pole BUFFER ZONE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN PROTECTED AREAS OF NEPAL Narayan Prasad Bhusal Associate Professor Department of Geography Education Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur Abstract Maintenance of eco-system diversity is often carried out by establishing national parks, wildlife reserves and other protected areas. The fourth amendment of the National Park and Wildlife Conservation Act in 1992 made the provision of buffer zone for protected areas considering buffer zone, an area of 2km in the vicinity of the park could benefi t from park revenue (30-50 percent) and in return the community is supposed to participate and assist in park management activities. Between 1996 and 2010 Government of Nepal demarcated buffer zones of 12 protected areas covering a total area of 5602.67 square kilometer in 83 VDCs and two Municipalities of 27 districts where benefi ting human popula- tion is over 0.9 million. In the buffer zone management programme emphasis has been given on the natural resource management where need of eco-friendly land use practices and peoples participation in conservation for long term sustainability are encouraged. This paper is an attempt to outline the various activities that have been executed under buffer zone management programme of Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation with the internal resources, local communities and support from UNDP, WWF Nepal, CARE Nepal, NTNC and other various partners for the conservation and development of buffer zones in Nepal. Its distinctly elongated, flattened head and small, rounded ears, make this unusual member of the cat family bear a strong resemblance to the civets, which are not cats, but members of the Viverridae family (4) (5). About the size of a domestic cat, the flat-headed cat has a long body, short legs and a short, thickly-furred tail (5). Even more than the fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrina), the flat-headed cat appears remarkably adapted to a semi-aquatic, fish-eating lifestyle (6). Partial webbing between the toes help the animal to move through water, and the long, narrow jaws and pointed, backward-facing teeth aid the catching and holding of slippery prey such as fish and frogs. The thick, soft coat is reddish-brown on the top of the head and dark brown on the body, finely speckled with grey and buff on the tips (5). The belly is mottled white, spotted and splashed with brown, and the insides of the limbs are reddish-brown, fading towards the feet (2). -

Evidently, three genera, namely, Dipterocarpus Gaert. f., Hopea Roxb. and Shorea Roxb. of the Dipterocarpaceae are described from the Neogene sediments of western India (Rajasthan and Gujarat). These taxa are marked by their complete absence in the region today. The presence of Dipterocarpaceae in western India has been noticed from the Early Eocene up to the Plio- Pleistocene in deep time. The family is usually a dominant component of the humid tropical and subtropical flora of the Indo-Malayan region and its discovery, along with earlier described fossils from western India indicates existence of ancient tropical rain forests in western India. A change in the climate affected warm and humid conditions occurring there during the Cenozoic resulting in arid to semi-arid climate at present which is responsible for the ultimate extinction of Dipterocarpaceae in the region. In addition, the palaeobiogeography of Dipterocarpaceae is reviewed. 1. Introduction understorey. Fishing cats have declined sharply across South-East Asia where, according to the Fishing Cat Working Group, there might be new populations still to be found but the species could also be approaching extinction. In 2015, the CBC recorded1 Fishing Cats at two sites with no previous records in south-west Cambodia: Peam Krosaop Wildlife Sanctuary (PKWS) and Ream National Park (RNP). We photo-captured two individuals at PKWS, one of the largest mangrove areas in South-East Asia. We were also informed of the killing of a Fishing Cat at PKWS soon after the study was completed in retaliation for raiding fishing nets. This project seeks to estimate population abundance and status in PKWS, assess threats and work with all the relevant stakeholders to develop conservation measures to protect this newly found Fishing Cat population. REPORT SUMMARY – Briefly summarize the rationale, goals, objectives and issues that were addressed. Provide sufficient background information so that anyone unfamiliar with the project can understand its overall goals and objectives. This section should summarize your achievements of project objectives, or, if this is a six month report, it should summarize your progress towards achieving your stated objectives. The Report Summary should be written as if for an external audience (donors, press, etc.) — in a non-technical style and not to exceed 1000 words. India is home to 15 species of cats, the highest number any country has (Nowell and Jackson 1996). Yet, apart from the four big cats the small ones do not feature in any major research or conservation planning. Until now, for the most part information on small cats in India, including the fishing cat, has been in the form of natural history notes on distribution and habits, ad-hoc records on sightings and behaviour or short studies on diet and habitat use. The distribution of the fishing cat in India was unclear and recent surveys for mammals in some potential fishing cat habitats had not yielded any positive result. Even more alarming were the negative results obtained from areas such as Bharatpur which had several reports of fishing cats until a few years ago. -

A quick summary of a twelve day search for mammals in North and Central Thailand guided by Rattapon Kaichid ( known as Tu ) who together with his wife Jan runs Nature Focus Thailand, they can be very highly recommended. Many thanks to Jon Hall for their email contact which is [email protected] Tu is a really nice guy to ƚƌĂǀĞůǁŝƚŚ͕ŚĞ͛ƐĂŶĞdžĐĞůůĞŶƚĂůů-round wildlife guide and his connections help smooth the way in many of the national parks. Based on our target species, Tu and Jan put together the following itinerary: x Three days ʹ Huai Kha Khaeng wildlife sanctuary x Three days - Khao Yai national park x Four days ʹ Kaeng Krachan national park x One day ʹ Salt pans for Spoon-billed sandpiper x One day ʹ Ban Tha Kham bay for Irawaddy dolphin and Finless porpoise This was quite easy going, giving us a fair bit of time in each of the main centres. I think we did very well scoring 43 species with good views of most of these although we had no luck with any of the mega mammals such as Clouded leopard, Marbled cat, Golden cat or Sun bear which are all possibles and seen from time to time. A couple of weeks before our visit a group had seen a Golden cat catching a dove in front of one of the bird blinds. A Sun bear had been seen crossing the road one morning near the top of the mountain at Kaeng Krachan and a group that arrived there at the same time as us went on to see a Binturong an hour or so later. -

SAL Botanical name: Shorea robusta Family: Dipterocarpaceae Chromosome no.: 2n= 14 Introduction: This tree is native to the Indian subcontinent, ranging south of the Himalaya, from Myanmar in the east to Nepal, India and Bangladesh. In India, it extends from Assam, Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand west to the Shivalik Hills in Haryana, east of the Yamuna. The range also extends through the Eastern Ghats and to the eastern Vindhya and Satpura ranges of central India. In Nepal, it is found mostly in the Terai region from east to west, especially, in the Sivalik Hills (Churia Range) in the subtropical climate zone. There are many protected areas, such as Chitwan National Park, Bardia National Park and Shukla Phat Wildlife Reserve, where there are dense forests of huge sal trees. It is also found in the lower belt of the Hilly region and Inner Terai. Uses: It is a medicinal tree, and used in Ayurveda for thousands of years to treat variety of diseases including piles, leucorrhoea, gonorrhea, skin disorders, ulcers, wounds, diarrhea, dysentery, burning sensation, seminal weakness, etc. Sal is one of the most important sources of hardwood timber in India, with hard, coarse-grained wood that is light in colour when freshly cut, but becomes dark brown with exposure. The wood is resinous and durable, and is sought-after for construction, although not well suited to planing and polishing. The wood is especially suitable for constructing frames for doors and windows. The leaves are also used fresh to serve ready made paan (betelnut preparations) and small snacks such as boiled black grams, gol gappa, etc. -

The 2008 IUCN Red Listings of the World's Small Carnivores
The 2008 IUCN red listings of the world’s small carnivores Jan SCHIPPER¹*, Michael HOFFMANN¹, J. W. DUCKWORTH² and James CONROY³ Abstract The global conservation status of all the world’s mammals was assessed for the 2008 IUCN Red List. Of the 165 species of small carni- vores recognised during the process, two are Extinct (EX), one is Critically Endangered (CR), ten are Endangered (EN), 22 Vulnerable (VU), ten Near Threatened (NT), 15 Data Deficient (DD) and 105 Least Concern. Thus, 22% of the species for which a category was assigned other than DD were assessed as threatened (i.e. CR, EN or VU), as against 25% for mammals as a whole. Among otters, seven (58%) of the 12 species for which a category was assigned were identified as threatened. This reflects their attachment to rivers and other waterbodies, and heavy trade-driven hunting. The IUCN Red List species accounts are living documents to be updated annually, and further information to refine listings is welcome. A Yellow-throated Marten Martes flavigula carrying a Small Indian Civet Viverricula indica Babu Ram LAMICHHANE1*, Chiranjibi Prasad POKHERAL1, Ambika Prasad KHATIWADA1, Rama MISHRA2 and Naresh SUBEDI1 Abstract Yellow-throated Marten Martes flavigula has a wide geographic distribution, but little is known about its ecology and behaviour. A camera-trap survey in and around Chitwan National Park, Nepal, photographed a solitary Marten carrying a Small Indian Civet Viverricula indica. The animal was in a grassland patch amid Sal Shorea robusta forest. It is unclear whether the Marten killed the Civet. Recent camera-trap surveys suggest that Yellow-throated Marten is widespread in Chitwan NP with records from altitudes of 190–675 m; many records are from Sal forest.
