Ollie Ray stayed with skipper Scott Ruskin while 35 were added, but Ray fell in the 27th over with the total still only 64. 8 overs later, Ruskin was bowled with his score on 41 and Hertford had scored only 85, half the side were out and only 13 overs were left. However Chris Box showed aggressive intent, getting off the mark with a straight 6 and helped by some less than straight bowling, that finally added a total of 18 wides to the score, the sixth pair added 69 in the next 6 overs. Niz Mohammed was run out in the same over that Box was bowled, but Darby continued to bat well hitting Neville for 6 before being bowled in the penultimate over. And a\t the end of the allotted 45 overs Hertford had reached a respectable 193 for 9. The Stevenage reply started in a similar vein to the Hertford innings. Box and Mohammed took an early wicket each, then Navin and Brown made a steady recovery for Stevenage, although it was hard going against Mohammed who bowled a fine spell, eventually finishing with 2 for 29 from his 9 overs. Mohammed broke the partnership just before the end of his spell and then Mitchell Perry bowled Adil to make Stevenage 77 for 4 from 21 overs. Slater helped Bayes to take the score to 99, but then Bayes was run out by some slick fielding two short of his fifty and the game switched swiftly Hertford's way. Stevenage had little to offer in the lower order and Ollie Ray took full advantage. Bowling admirably straight he took the last 5 wickets in six overs at a personal cost of 14 runs and Hertford had won by 72 runs with 8 overs to spare.

However as often happens with low totals, batsmen get bogged down and become inhibited and Hertford were wobbling precariously on 81-6 when Chris Box came to the wicket. His preferred option was to hit anything hittable and hit it hard and in 23 balls he struck seven fours in an innings of 30* to seal the victory for Hertford. Stortford, in their first game in this division for six years, started brightly despite losing Tom Chapman who played on to Niz Mohammed for 2. Skipper David Hughes was in imperious form lashing anything loose to the boundary though Chapman, in a risky single to get off the mark nearly ran him out - Hughes just beating Box's direct hit. Hertford's seam attack gave Hughes and Ballard plenty of opportunities and the score had raced to 61 by the end of the 11th over. Ruskin then brought himself on and the flow of runs slowed with very few coming from his end. Ruskin persevered with Box at the other end and was rewarded when the seamer, whose line was improving, bowled Hughes for 30 and then trapped Ballard lbw next over for 32. With these two back in the pavilion, Hertford could breathe a little easier as prospects of a mammoth run chase faded a little. Soon it was spin at both ends as Krishan Canagasabey replaced Box though it was Ruskin who had the next successes. Matt Surry was smartly picked up at slip by Sandun Dias and in the next over Glen Querl was well by Canagasabey to leave Stortford with a little problem on 90-5 in the 24th over. Neither Canagasabey nor Ruskin was giving much away conceding little more than one an over. There was one more success for Hertford before lunch with Steve Coleman bowled by Canagasabey. Lunch was taken with Stortford on 108-6 after 31 overs and Hertford well pleased at having got themselves in a good position. Post lunch, Stortford needed to bat steadily and use up all their overs but their innings collapsed to 117 all out in a further 25 balls with Ruskin completing 5-22 and also taking a brilliant catch in the covers off Canagasabey to leave Krishan with 2-8 from seven. On a good batting wicket with a fast outfield, Stortford's score was a long way off par. It was therefore incumbent on the home side's bowlers to attack Hertford and give nothing away. In Whittingham and Kevin Walls, Stortford had an excellent pair to start off with and each got an early wicket as Hertford openers, Will Bancroft and Canagasabey went for seven. Richard Cordingley and Ollie Ray defended stoutly but the score had only progressed as far as 24 in the 20th over when Ray was caught for a painstaking six off 49 balls. After his bowling heroics, Ruskin was in no mood to let the game slip away and chanced his arm at anything loose, though there was not much of this on offer. He lost Cordingley in the 25th over for 10 with the score on 40 and it was looking as though Hertford may need all their permitted 74 overs if they were to inch to victory. Sandun Dias, on his debut, showed aggressive intent but was fortunate to be dropped off a simple chance to mid-off when on 7. The miss was not expensive as after striking a four off Querl he top edged the next and Coleman held on to the skier. The total was 61, just over half way but half the wickets had gone, with Ruskin on 20 off 47 balls. His scoring rate dropped as he and Rob Darby played attritional cricket and Hertford went into tea at 73-5 off 42 overs. The pair continued in the same vein after the break and a long evening session looked likely until Darby was caught at the wicket off Coleman for 7, scored off 44 balls. Chris Box then came to the wicket and after a couple of sighters drove Coleman for four. In the next over he repeated the treatment adding a two as well. Ruskin gained confidence and struck a brace of twos off Lindop's next over. Hughes brought back Querl who then had figures of 2-21 off nine but Box hit him out of the attack with another couple of boundaries. Ruskin then brought Hertford to 99 with a huge six off Lindop. Hughes' last throw was to recall Whittingham whose previous 10 overs had conceded just 11 runs. Two drives for four by Box brought the scores level and the fourth ball was also drilled to the boundary to seal the victory. Ruskin ended on 43*, scored off 109 deliveries, a true skipper's innings.

Bowling O M R W Nb Wd James Mead 5 0 28 2 0 1 Nizar Mohammed 8.5 1 42 7 1 7 Mitchell Perry 7 0 13 1 0 0 Seven for Niz as Hampstead routed Ollie Ray sets up a shock win for Hertford A strong Hampstead side came to Balls Park on the back of a ten wicket win over Winchmore Hill the previous day and met a Hertford side which contained just four first team players from Saturday's encounter with Stortford. Winning the toss, Ruskin opted to bat and Ollie Ray and Andy Searson made careful progress against accurate bowling from Khan and Thomas, just 16 runs came off the first nine overs. Ray then began to get the measure of the bowling and when Thomas was replaced by Lombard runs began to come more freely though the bowler managed the initial breakthrough, having Searson caught behind by Cotterill for nine. Ruskin showed aggression from the start and in the next seven overs he and Ray pushed the rate up, adding 60 runs before Ruskin went lbw to Thomas who had returned at the other end. Steve Benford could not get his timing right and the scoring rate slowed again. Ray then launched into the bowlers taking sixes off Paul Weeks and Akhtar as he raced on to 75 before falling to Thomas with the score on 137. Hertford could have done with him anchoring the innings and batting through the fifty overs. With little in the way of recognised forcing bats to come, Hertford opted for a cautious approach and inched their way to 185, helped by a straight six in the last over by James Mead. Rob Fairhurst marshalled the tail with a solid innings of 21. Thomas finished with 3-23 off nine, and Khan (1-12 off 9) and Weekes (2- 19 off 10) were also very economical. Hertford's score looked 100 short of being competitive and perhaps the Hampstead batsmen thought it too trivial. They came out firing on all cylinders but Niz Mohammed got rid off Imraan Mohammed and Paul Weekes in his first over to leave them on 12-2. Another four off James Mead and then Mohammed went for 18 in an over which contained a wide and a no-ball. 34-2 off four overs and an early finish was definitely in view. Then in the seventh over it was Mead's turn to make a double strike - getting rid of the dangerous Akhtar for 27, brilliantly caught by Mohammed, and trapping S.Sharma lbw without scoring. Meanwhile Headley had progressed to 20. Green became Mohammed's third victim in the next over and after a wide which raced to the boundary, Hampstead ended the eighth over with half their side out for 56. It could have been worse for incoming batsman Thomas was dropped first ball and Headley also gave a sharp chance in the same over. It was time for a more cautious approach but Hertford, and Mohammed in particular, were ebullient. Mohammed had Headley caught behind for 29 and the tail was exposed. Mitchell Perry had Lombard caught in the next over - by Mohammed (who else!) - and the stubborn Thomas was bowled by Mohammed for two to give Niz a five wicket haul. Perry's next over was uneventful but Mohammed then cleaned up the innings, hitting the wickets twice more to end with the remarkable figures of 7-42 off 8.5 overs. A record performance by a Hertford bowler in this - or any other major cup competition. Hampstead's innings of 86 lasted 18.5 overs and was one run less than Hornsey achieved last year when Hertford set a target of 484. It was a great performance and one that Hertford's young players will remember for some time and gain a lot of confidence from.

Niz Mohammed continued his recent form removing both openers with 37 on the board. Mark Fordham struck the ball well but he mistimed a shot and was caught behind by Bancroft off Chris Box for 21. Mohmammed then brought off a brilliant catch off his own bowling to remove Suliman Qadir and Harpenden were in trouble at 72-4. This worsened immediately when David Whiteley trod on his stumps after playing Box into the legside. Rain then arrived and Harpenden's allocation dropped to 58 overs, 47 for Hertford. On the resumption Tony Hooper and Oliver Tuck batted carefully to see the visitors to 94-5 at lunch. Rain extended the luncheon interval and reduced the over split to 56-45. Harpenden were unable to use up their allocation as Box bowled Hooper for 26 and a smart run out of Tuck by Krishan Canagasabey reduced them to 110-7. Sandun Dias (2) and Scott Ruskin (1) mopped up the tail for 134 leaving Hertford 60 overs to get the runs. Mohammed finished with 3-51 and Box bowled well for his 3-29 off 13 overs. Will Bancroft and Krishan Canagasabey got Hertford off to a steady start and took the total to 35 before Canagasabey was caught by Chris Arnold off Mason for 11. That left just 100 to win. Ollie Ray did not last long and soon after he was bowled by Mason, Bancroft was caught in the slips by Qadir off Arnold and Hertford were 43-3. A steady partnership of 40 then followed between Richard Cordingley and Scott Ruskin out of which Cordingley made just 6. This was interrupted by rain which extended the tea interval and left Hertford with a further 31 overs to get 64 runs. With Ruskin attacking anything loose Cordingley's anchor innings was exactly what was required. After Cordingley's departure, Dias helped Ruskin take the score to 120 before falling to Qadir. With the skies very dark and rain again threatening Hertford threw the bat and ran out winners by 4 wickets.

It was a stronger Hornsey side this time and they exacted revenge albeit by the relatively small margin of 6 balls. Considering Hertford's bowlers conceded 19 wides to their host's 10 the former only have themselves to blame. Winning the toss Scott Ruskin opted to bat even though the pitch looked "interesting". The Hornsey bowlers found it to their liking and with occasional lift in the offing they subdued the Hertford openers to the extent that only 20 runs were scored off the first ten overs before Andy Searson, looking to up the rate, was caught for 12. Will Bancroft was on two at the time and his score had not progressed when Hertford lost their next wicket at 36 when Ollie Ray was bowled by Hornsey skipper, Chetan Patel. Ruskin was off the mark straight away and attempted to gain control of the game. He and Bancroft added a welcome 50 for the third wicket before Ruskin tried one shot too many and was caught for 22. This was in the 26th over, and with only 86 on the board Hertford needed some big overs in the last 19 if their score was to be a challenging one. Tom Bancroft joined his brother but runs were still hard to come by, overs conceding more than six were rare. With ten overs left acceleration was needed but a double strike by Waine, dismissing Will Bancroft and Niz Mohammed in the same over set Hertford back. Tom Bancroft reached a well deserved 50 before being caught by Colly off Gegory and the Hertford tail mustered a few more runs to end the innings on 177-8. This was possibly enough if they bowled well and exploited the pitch. Pick of the Hornsey bowlers were Mark Tucker whose 8 overs returned 3-21 and T.Waine who finished with 3-33. Extras contributed 31 to Hertford's score. When Hornsey batted Scriny opted for aggression but was well caught at square leg by Rob Fairhurst off Mohammed, hero of the Evening Standard game the previous week, but he was not enjoying as much success. It was his partner James Mead who struck next trapping Struthers lbw for 2. Unfortunately the age related bowling restrictions meant that Mead had to be taken off after his fifth over with 1-7. A smart return from the deep from Fairhurst saw Fleming run out for 7 and when a few overs later Mead caught Gregory off Tom Bancroft for 7 Hornsey were 48-4 off 16 overs and Hertford's hopes were high. A 77 run partnership between Tucker and Patel swung the game Hornsey's way though Hertford had chances to break the partnership much earlier. The break finally came via Ruskin who had Tucket caught by Mead for 53. Tom Bancroft who had taken 1-13 in his first spell of five overs was brought back but his radar had broken and five wides made for a very long over and a fortunate boost for Hornsey. Though Mead got a wicket when he returned he was also straying and overstepping and the game went Hornsey's way. A further wicket for Mead kept Hertford in the hunt but the asking rate was now comfortable for Hornsey and the game ended fittingly at the start of the 45th over with yet another wide. Extras by Hertford matched Hornsey's generosity, 31, but Hertford's wide and no-ball tally was 24 compared with their opponents' 13. This accounted for the result. Mead finished with 3-26, of which 8 runs were self inflicted, Ruskin with 2-34. So Hertford's National campaign came to an end for another year.

Hertford's batting failure against Sawbridgeworth cost them the top spot in the HCPL D2E table, slipping to third as Stevenage and Potters Bar both won. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Hertford ran into an in-form Andy Richardson - the Jamaican star of the Sawbridgeworth bowling line-up. By lunch he had taken 5-19 off 12 overs, eliminating Hertford's top order. His bowling was of high quality, assisted by a pitch which gave him the occasional help in terms of bounce. In his fifth over he bowled both of Hertford's openers - Will Bancroft for 4 and Krishan Canagasabey for 3. Hertford were indebted to 10 extras at the time to see their total at 17-2. Two overs later another double strike, this time two sharply lifting balls, accounted for Richard Cordingley - caught off a glove to slip - and Scott Ruskin who fended off a ball to the keeper, both without scoring. Sandun Dias tried to carry the attack to the bowlers and had reasonable succes, striking five fours and two sixes in a 28 ball innings of 40, before he top edged a ball from Richardson to Cunningham at cover to give Richardson his fifth wicket. Unfortunately for Hertford two more wickets were lost before lunch, Tom Bancroft clipped a ball to fine leg only for Lloyd to bring off a brilliant catch and Ollie Ray who had batted for 74 minutes was bowled by Ryan Cunningham for 13. At 83-7 Hertford's position was grim. The tail added a further 43 runs with Chris Box (17) and Lee Beskeen (14) both making contributions but Hertford's bowlers had to be at their very best if this was to be a competitive total. Richardson finished with 5-32 off 18 overs. Sandun Dias was lively and posed problems for the Sawbridgeworth batsmen and would have had two wickets had he not overstepped. Sawbridgeworth approached their modest total with caution but managed to post 50 in the 16th over. Scott Ruskin, who had opened the bowling with Dias, rang the changes and Mitchell Perry and Chris Box each claimed a wicket to haul Sawbridgeworth back to 58-2. Danny Wilson, Sawbridgeworth's skipper, then joined Ashman who was on 23 and the pair saw the home team to victory without further loss. Ashman ended on 62* and Wilson on 30*. Hertford can have no complaints - the top order could not handle bowling of Richardson's calibre - and they could not match him when it was their turn to bowl.

Insertion backfires Rob Darby's first game in charge saw him win the toss and put Stevenage into bat on a green wicket - a decision that spectacularly backfired. His opposite number, David Carr, said he would have done the same so it would have been a good toss to lose. Once the Stevenage openers appreciated that neither the wicket nor the overcast conditions were helping the Hertford seam bowlers, as had been expected, they opened up. Though some of the shots were aerial in nature, none came close to Hertford hands. A short boundary was also a tempting factor and both Tanwaar Sikandar and Gary Brown cleared it on the way to a partnership of exactly 100. By then Darby had run through his seam options and had brought Scott Ruskin on at the pavilion end. However it was Chris Box who made the breakthrough. Sikandar, after hitting him for a six and a four in one over edged one to give Ruskin a catch at first slip. Two overs later, Ashley Bayes also gave Box the 6-4 treatment but this time Darby took him off to have spin at both ends. Stevenage continued to make progress but just before lunch, Bayes fell lbw to Ruskin to leave the visitors well placed at 140-2 at the break. During the afternoon the sun came out and wickets started to fall. Brown was caught at the wicket one short of a half century and with Naseer Ahmed caught by Ollie Ray, Navin Seneviratne caught by keeper Will Bancroft - both also off Riskin - Stevenage were reduced to 147-5. Saeed Kazmi and Carr then steadied the innings with a partnership of 54. Lee Beskeen was proving difficult to score off, his first eight overs going for just nine runs. Kazmi then got the measure of him, and a two boundaries in his next over relieved the pressure. The 200 was passed in the 52nd over and Stevenage were looking to push the score along. Carr was then by Bancroft to give Ruskin his fifth wicket. Box was recalled and got another wicket when Kazmi skied a ball to Sandun Dias at deep mid off - Kazmi had just reached his half century. In the scramble for runs, Ruskin picked up two more, another stumping by Bancroft removed Barry Hann and Scott Davies was caught in the deep by Richard Cordingley. A needless run out off the last ball gave Hertford their fifth bowling pount as Stevenage ended 239 all out. Ruskin finshed with the figures 19-2-71-7. Stevenage started with seam at one end, Sikandar, and spin at the other, Amit Dattani. Dattani immediately posed problems and started with three maidens. The brothers Bancroft opened for Hertford and it was Tom who was first to go, caught at short leg by Hann off the first ball of Dattani's fourth over. In the next over Sandun Dias was adjudged lbw to Sikandar and Hertford's hopes of mounting a serious challenge were already fading. By the 16th over they had disappeared with Scott Ruskin bowled by Dattani and Will Bancroft caught by Ahmed off the same bowler. Rob Darby and Ollie Ray took the score from 24-4 to 39-4 at tea but thereafter it was a question of survival. With the sun out, Dattani was getting help from the wicket and the introduction of Azhar Ali brought spin at both ends. He had Ray caught by Ahmed in his second over, Cliff Cavener went lbw to Dattani and Hertford were 57-6. Richard Cordingley and Chris Box both fell to bat pad catches by Hann off Dattani, 63-8. It was now the 30th over and there would certainly be more than 20 overs for Hertford to survive. Rob Darby who had watched the carnage was 22 not out and opted to try for a batting point as a consolation. Beskeen kept him company for eight overs as the pair took the score to 91-9 before Beskeen was caught for 5. Niz Mohammed struck Ali for a two, but was caught next ball and it was all over. Darby was left unbeaten on 43. Dattani's figures were 19-6-58-6 and Ali finsihed with 3-9 off 7.4 overs. Stevenage winners by the large margin of 146 runs, the second largest defeat by runs in Hertford's league history. The result saw Hertford slip to fifth in the table. Darby must have wished that the coin had fallen the other way up.

The latest venture against West Herts started with the usual early loss. This time Krish Canagasabey edged Steven Clark to Duncan Kendal in the third over. Sandun Dias then settled in to play some excellent straight drives before a rush of blood tempted him to play across the line to Clark and he was bowled for 37. 50-2 became 51-4 as first Scott Ruskin went lbw to Clark, first ball - also playing across the line - and then Will Bancroft was bowled, playing no shot, to Duncan Hodges' first ball. Hodges had replaced Clark despite the latter's double strike in the previous over. Skipper Rob Darby and Ollie Ray then grafted cautiously before Ray was caught off Richardson for 5 just before lunch. Hertford went into the break at 74-5. After lunch Darren Benford and Darby took the score to 99 before Darby was caught behind off Hodges for 31. Hodges had now taken 2-10 off 15 overs. The tail tried its best and Benford, Chris Box and Niz Mohammed all made double figures and Hertford managed a second batting point thanks to 33 not out by Richard Cordingley who farmed the bowling well. Finishing on 164-9 Hertford must have known that they had not got enough. This was soon evident as Neal Parlane, a top New Zealand player, and Sean Farrell set about the opening attack of Dias and Mohammed. Despite a change of ball - the ball in use was a "Saracens league" ball not a Home Counties one - 51 came off 10 overs. Though the introduction of spin from Ruskin and Canagasabey slowed the rate the score was 117 without loss when tea was taken. Shortly afterwards Ruskin had Farrell caught by Dias for 31 and he also had Parlane lbw for 73. By then the game was over with West Herts on 146-2. A third bowling point was gained when Box had Hodges caught behind for 8 but that was small consolation. It was also small consolation for Will Bancroft the keeper who had earlier found it extremely hard to read Canagasabey, conceding four byes on four occasions. The defeat saw Hertford drop to seventh in the table, a rapid decline after their promising start to the campaign.

The Broxbourne opening pair struggled to get 8 runs off the first 6 overs, before Dawson was caught by Rob Darby off Niz Mohammed. An effort to increase the scoring rate failed as the next two wickets fell to confused running resulting in two bad run outs. 14 for 3 swiftly became 18 for 4 when Fergusson was caught behind off Tom Bancroft. The opening bowlers continued unchanged and they both struck again before the end of their allotted 10 overs. Firstly Mark Smith overbalanced playing Mohammed and was smartly stumped by Steve Benford and then Bancroft trapped Wilkins in front to make the home side 26 for 6. Spinners Scott Ruskin and Lee Beskeen entered the attack and skipper Moffett accompanied by White attempted to restore some Broxbourne pride. They managed to add 29 from 15 overs before Beskeen had Moffett lbw and next overRuskin had Rhodes caught. White was then caught on the boundary off Beskeen with the score on 69. Some resistance from the last wicket took the score to 97 before Cordingley bowled Adam Smith. However it was only strict interpretation of the leg side wide law, which cost Hertford 18 runs, that got Broxbourne's score near one hundred. For a while it looked at though Hertford were finding it equally difficult to score against openers Moffett and Rhodes and Andy Searson was soon back in the pavilion with the score on 5. Then Sandun Dias and Ollie Ray broke the shackles, Ray clipping successive Rhodes balls to the mid wicket boundary and Dias clearing the boundary off Moffett. Moffett got his revenge on Dias bowling him for 19 and in his next over bowled Scott Ruskin with a beauty. However with sensible batting from skipper Rob Darby and Ray timing the ball well the total rose steadily. Rhodes bowled Ray on his return to the attack, but the result was not in doubt as Darby hit him over the boundary and moments later Hertford had won by 6 wickets with 21 overs to spare.

Both sides very much relied on one of their opening batsmen to anchor their respective innings. For Hertford Tom Bancroft was last out for 91 and Hemel's opener, Hemish Ilangaratne, was ninth out for 88, both batting for almost exactly three hours. The highest contribution from any other batsmen on either side was a mere 26. Put into bat by the visitors, Hertford tried a new opening pair, but Ollie Ray was bowled in the second over by Collman. Sandun Dias started brightly hitting successive fours and Bancroft also found the boundary twice in succession. However in the eighth over Dias' bright inning was cut short by a good low catch by Berry off Collman. Ruskin soon followed and Hertford were 55 for 3. Skipper Rob Darby joined Bancroft and the pair added 65 before Hodgins switched ends and induced Darby to sweep a simple catch to Morgan. Canagasaby looked totally out of touch and was bowled on the stroke of lunch with the total on 122. After lunch Bancroft continued to bat solidly, but the next three batsmen came and went, all dismissed by Hodgins. With Beskeen run out Hertford were 180 for 9 and Bancroft was visibly tiring, his last 10 runs having dome in singles. Niz Mohammed struck a brisk 18 before Hodgins got his fifth wicket when Bancroft was caught for 91, an innings which contained 11 boundaries. With Hertford dismissed in the 53rd over, the visitors had a minimum of 57 overs in which to reach their target. They started slowly against the spin of Scott Ruskin and the pace of Chris Box. Ruskin soon bowled Berry, but Ilangaratne and Mohamed were very obdurate as they took the total to 54 in the 21st over, though Ilangaratne did manage to clear the boundary off Box's last ball. Mohammed then lost patience against the accurate Ruskin and was bowled and Penny soon suffered a similar fate off Canagasaby. Tea was taken after 32 overs with the score on 87 for 3. Two overs after tea Morgan put a full toss down the throat of Box off Lee Beskeen and the game was in the balance. A period of cat and mouse cricket then followed as Hertford slowed the over rate down as much as they dared and Hemel crept toward their target. As it began to appear that Hemel would not receive more than the minimum overs, Hertford gave the ball to Dias and a flurry of runs and wickets followed. In his first over Dias had Morgan caught by Ray and in his next trapped Hodgins in front. Next over Ruskin bowled Weston and Hemel were 164 for 7 with probably only 6 overs left. James Potton took up the challenge, but at that point Ilangaratne ran himself out attempting a second run. Potton took twelve of Dias' next over but was caught behind off the last ball of the over and Hemel's last pair decided to block out the last three overs. Ruskin ended his marathon spell with 3 for 74 from 29 overs while Dias picked up 3 for 29.

Winning the toss and batting, skipper Tom Bancroft opened but after 13 balls had lost both his opening partner, Will Gilbert, and Ollie Ray each for a single. Alex Lodge came and went without scoring and then to compound the problem Bancroft played a rash shot and was caught to leave Hertford reeling on 18-4. His brother did not stay long and it was soon 19-5. Occupation was the key now but apart from Scott Ruskin, the batsmen did not appear to recognise this or know how to set about the task. Jon Mahmood and Denzil Owen were bowling well, Mahmood had 4-9 off six overs and Owen 1-10. Both bowled their allotted overs straight off and by the time the enforced change came each had one more wicket and Hertford were struggling at 41-7. Mahmood had taken 5-15 off his ten overs. Ruskin was still there and needed the tail enders to hold out so that he could use up as many of the 50 overs as possible. James Lidgett showed the most application, surviving 30 balls but after 34 overs the innings was all over - just 57, Ruskin not out 28. Ruskin opened the bowling for Hertford with a maiden but a wide which went for 4 off Niz Mohammed's first over sent Beaconsfield on their way. Mohammed's line improved and with Ruskin rolling out maidens the first seven overs conceded just 15 runs - albeit 25% of the required number. Mohammed's next over went for 14, a disaster for Hertford. Ruskin then had Coleman caught by Josh Tooth and two balls later trapped Lynch lbw. Mitchell Perry had Suter lbw for 15 but that was the end of Hertford's successes as Thomas and Musk saw the hosts home to a very easy victory by seven wickets at the start of the 21st over. Hertford's bowlers, particularly Ruskin (2-18 off 10 overs) and Mitchell Perry (1-6 off 4) demonstrated that, given more runs, they could have made life difficult for the home side. A Hertford score of 150 would have been competitive.

A spectacular innings from Sandun Dias saw Hertford reach their target in the 25th over - and that was after they had lost their first three wickets for 19. Dias then monopolised the scoring reaching the boundary in all parts of the ground. His fifty came in 38 minutes and when he was finally caught for 74 his innings had lasted just 49 minutes, during which he cleared the boundary four times and hit a further eleven fours. Will Gilbert was rather a passive partner during the fourth wicket stand of 78, but after that he took control and ended 38 not out as Hertford cruised home. The start of the game gave no indication of the things to come, as the home openers put on 58 for the first wicket. The introduction of Chris Marques into the attack changed thing as he dismissed both openers in successive overs. Josh Tooth took a wicket in the last over of his allotted 10 overs and Northchurch were 67 for 3. They recovered to 98 before Mitch Perry broke the stand and then Rob Slater took two wickets in successive balls and Northchurch were 102 for 6. Jack Anderson then took two wickets in his first over, but some good hitting from skipper Hobley boosted the score before Anderson bowled the last man and Northchurch had only posted a modest 138.

Hertford draw despite Malik's 168 not out A much depleted Hertford did well do draw the match against Langleybury on Saturday after withstanding the assault of Sahazad Malik, who hit 168 not out in less than even time. Put into bat on a good wicket, Langleybury soon took advantage of the conditions with their openers putting on 63 in 25 minutes before Niz Mohammed had Amin caught. Skipper Greg Cooper had played the quiet role in that partnership and did so in the next while Malik took control of the game. Malik raced to his fifty in 45 minutes, but just when Cooper was opening up with three fours off a Tom Bancroft over, Bancroft trapped him leg before. Their second wicket partnership had added 92 in just 48 minutes. Ross Channer was next to give support to Malik and no Hertford bowler could keep them quiet. Lunch was taken with Langleybury on 182 for 2 from 30 overs and there was no respite thereafter. James Lidgett finally broke the partnership when he had Channer caught behind and in his next over a fine catch by Tom Bancroft dismissed Will Oxley to make the score 246 for 4. No other batsman really got going, but that was probably because Malik did not give them much opportunity. Having reached his century in just under two hours he proceeded to get his next fifty runs in 33 minutes. His team's 300 came up after three hours batting and eventually they declared on 354 for 7 after 55 overs. Malik, 168 not out, had cleared the boundary three times and had hit 22 fours in his innings. Hertford could have crumbled following that onslaught and with both openers back in the pavilion on 39 things did not look good. However Sandun Dias decided that attack was the best form of defence and Ollie Ray, who did not miss an opportunity to score either, joined him. The pair added 76 in 49 minutes, with Ray taking two sixes from an Eddie Gunning over, but then Ross Channer had Ray caught for 49. Darren Benford swiftly went, but then Will Gilbert joined Dias in another productive stand. Dias had reached his fifty in just under an hour and thirty minutes later a century beckoned. But he took one chance too many and skied a catch off Gunning. His 84 included five huge sixes as well as ten fours. Hertford were not out of the wood because Gilbert fell next over, having contributed a valuable 31. 188 for 6, 13 overs left and three teenagers in next. The lads did not let the side down. Elliott King and Will Bancroft negotiated the next 11 overs before Bancroft played on. Then James Lidgett helped King play out the draw. And it was not all static defence as King reached the boundary seven times with some well times shots in his 32 not out.

Having put North Mymms into bat, Tom Bancroft gave Hertford the best of starts bowling Saxby in his second over. Two overs later he struck again having Bamford caught at slip. With Wynne proving a stubborn opener, Rawle attempted to up the tempo, taking three boundaries off Niz Mohammed. The pair had taken the total to 45 when Sandun Dias took an excellent slip catch off Bancroft to dismiss Rawle and next over James Lidgett trapped Gilbert in front to make Mymms 50 for 4. Bancroft completed an excellent opening spell of ten overs for 20 runs and three wickets and his replacement Dias soon got Hertford's fifth wicket with the total on 87. Unfortunately he then tweaked a hamstring and his replacement went for twelve runs in his first over. This broke Hertford's stranglehold and at lunch the home side was 121 for 5. After lunch although Lee Beskeen bowled tightly, Krishan Canagasabey went for 41 runs from six overs and the score was mounting steadily. Wynne moved from defence to attack and although his first fifty took almost two hours his century came up in another hour. Bancroft returned to the attack and although he was more expensive than in his first spell, he eventually broke the sixth wicket partnership by bowling Wynne. However by then Wynne had reached 134 and he and Sarwan had put on 167. Twenty runs later Sarwan was run out and in the same over Bancroft picked up a well deserved fifth wicket. Moments later North Mymms declared when their 9th wicket fell off the first ball of the sixtieth over. For the first half dozen overs Ollie Ray and Tom Bancroft looked comfortable enough, but then both were out in successive overs and Hertford were 23 for 2. Young Elliot King soon followed and then Bamford brilliantly caught skipper Rob Darby, who had hit two confident boundaries, in the gully. Dias countered aggressively but was soon caught behind off Hicks and Hertford were 61 for 5. From then on Hertford had no hope of victory and although Jack Anderson and Canagasabey put up some resistance, Hertford were bowled out for 121 in the 37th over.

The start was delayed and the game reduced to a 37 over match. Then a further break for rain reduced the overs to 34 per side. Hertford had a good start, Tom Bancroft carrying on from where he had left off the day before by taking the first four wickets at a cost of 20 runs from six overs. Cockfosters were then 50 for 4, but the next pair of Elder and Stokes put on 104 with Stokes the prominent partner with 60. Josh Tooth broke the stand with three overs left and the visitors finally reached 168 for 6. Although, Hertford lost two wickets, their scoring rate was looking good as they reached 55 before rain stopped play in the seventh over. It did not relent after that, so both sides will return to Balls Park next Sunday to replay the game.

Hertford elected to bat on a day of uncertain weather. Although they lost Chris Wade early, Tom Bancroft gave Dias excellent support in a second wicket stand that produced 69 runs in 50 minutes. Dias was the dominant partner, being particularly severe on Ruan Premadasa who was allowed only one over for 14 runs. However, the game changed as soon as Glenn Querl was introduced into the attack. In his first over he had Bancroft lbw and two overs later Querl sent Rob Darby back to the pavilion with another lbw decision. Having reached his fifty with a six, Dias cleared the boundary twice more, but with the total on 99 Coleman had him well caught by Premadasa as he attempted a sweep. His innings of 68 had lasted 80 minutes and had included four sixes and five fours. Soon after rain stopped play and the break merged with the lunch interval. After lunch the Stortford pair of Querl and Coleman continued their dominance. The only Hertford batsman to show any real defiance was Jack Anderson who hit two sixes in his 24 before he became Coleman's second victim. To compound Hertford's misery, Chris Box twisted his knee in attempting to hit Coleman and had to retire hurt and the innings ended with a run out. Querl finished with the excellent figures of 4 for 16 from 11.2 overs. Bishop's Stortford's reply got off to a poor start as Dias took three quick wickets. In his first over he trapped Fishpool in front and then in the next two overs, David Hughes and Querl were both dismissed in a similar manner, substitute fielder Ali Hillary picking up low catches at extra cover. With the visitors on 28 for 3 after 6 overs the game was in the balance, but Eddie Ballard and Coleman got their heads down. Hertford rang the changes, but apart from a couple of half chances and a fumbled run out attempt, the pair batted sensibly and gave their team no cause for alarm. They were still together at tea with the total on 112 and they soon wrapped up a comfortable victory after the break.

Hertford out of County Cup A below strength and inexperienced Hertford side lost comfortably to Cockfosters in the second round of the Hertfordshire Cup on Sunday. Having put Cockfosters in to bat, Hertford failed to make an early breakthrough as the visiting openers put on 54 for the first wicket. Ollie Ray broke the stand, but then O'Leary and Cooper put on 59 for the second wicket. When Josh Tooth bowled O'Leary for 57, half the overs were gone and the visitors were well placed to post a large total. Rob Fairhurst then took two wickets in successive overs to make Cockfosters 150 for 4 from 34 overs. Although the Hertford bowlers continued to bowl steadily, Morgan accumulated runs with his partners and it was only a penetrative second spell from Tom Bancroft, in which he took three wickets, that prevented the visitors posting an even more formidable total. Hertford started with a steady reply but Will Bancroft got completely bogged down, so runs were really only coming from one end. Ollie Ray reached 19 without really timing the ball, but Jack Anderson batted brightly for his 29. The middle order failed and at 65 for 6 Hertford was staring at defeat. Rob Slater and Rob Fairhurst refused to roll over and the pair added 70 before Slater was bowled by Barker. The tail then folded quickly and Fairhurst was last out three short of his half century.

Hertford's poor form continues Hertford slumped to a second seven wicket defeat against a side they had beaten earlier in the season when Harpenden won comfortably on Saturday Hertford had hoped that the return of Scott Ruskin and Steven Riddle would boost their fortunes, but it was not to be. They were put into bat on a damp wicket and were soon in trouble against the hostile Ben Mahoney and John Kerley. Steve Riddle was soon given out caught behind and then Tom Bancroft was bowled, both Kerley victims. Dias then got a ball that stopped from Mahoney and lobbed an easy catch to midwicket. That made it 21 for 3 and worse was to follow. First change bowler Mike Howard soon had Rob Darby and Ruskin caught behind off successive balls and Hertford were 35 for 5. While this was going on, Chris Box, in the unaccustomed position of first wicket down, had got his head down admirably and he was now joined by Jack Anderson. The pair doubled the score in the next half hour but then a break down in communications resulted in Box being run out for 35. Lunch was taken 10 minutes later with the score on 87 for 6. Anderson's bright innings was brought to a close by Qadir soon after lunch and the tail was soon wrapped up by Kerley who finished with 4 for 21. To make Harpenden struggle to reach their target Hertford had to make early inroads. However the wicket had eased somewhat and although Bancroft bowled tightly the opening pair were soon in command. The fifty partnership came in just 45 minutes and Hertford's breakthrough did not come until James Lidgett, the fifth bowler used, took Jones's middle stump out of the ground. Howard was soon in his stride clearing the boundary with his second scoring shot and the second wicket pair took the score to 99 before Dias took a smart catch off Ollie Ray to dismiss Winchester for 45. One more wicket fell before Harpenden completed their victory, the winning runs coming in the 31st over.

The Hertford batsmen were delighted when Tom Bancroft won the toss and opted to bat and after a first over maiden Ollie Ray and David Spring were soon on the attack. The put on 74 for the 1st wicket in 12 overs before Spring went lbw to Carr for 20. Ray followed soon after for a fluent 64, an innings which included 12 fours and a six. Jack Anderson and Sandun Dias upped the scoring rate, Dias's 50 came off 35 balls. Unfortunately he also went lbw, to Wheeler for 57 (9 fours and 3 sixes). Tom Bancroft fell without scoring in the same over, the 31, which Hertford ended at 217-4. The rate then fell slightly with Will Gilbert settling in. Anderson was bowled by Barrie when on 90. Gilbert then marshalled the lower middle order and took the attack to the Bessborough bowlers, as 74 were taken off the last five overs. Gilbert finished on 65* as Hertford ended their 45 overs on 336-7.

Bessborough were not fazed by this total and had 100 on the board by the 13th over. After 31 overs they were on a par with Hertford – 215-4. Barrie was finding the boundary as easily as the Hertford batsmen had done so. He was caught by Ray off Tom Bancroft for 117 with the score on 245. Bessborough did not have the depth of batting that Hertford had and Hertford's bowling and fielding was also tighter even though they were reduced to ten men as Spring was unable to field. Wickets started to fall and Tom Bancroft completed an excellent spell of 5-59 as Hertford ran out winners by 52 runs.

Hertford's Cricket Week got off to a stunning start with a glorious batting display on a day of sunshine. The Hertgate Trophy match was moved to Cricket Week as part of the 125 Anniversary celebrations of cricket at Balls Park. Southgate brought a strong side and duly set about Hertford's bowlers on a good batting wicket – by lunch they had posted 200 for the loss of just one wicket. That wicket was thanks to a brilliant diving catch by George Pavey. Adam Fleming had already got his century (off 74 balls) but was out soon after the break for 122. Fleming and Alvin Durgacharan added 207 for the second wicket and Durgacharan was the next to go with 121. The bowlers were suffering badly but there was to be no respite as Faisal Mir chipped in with 55* before skipper Geoff Blackmore called a halt with 357-4 on the board. The runs had come in less than 45 overs and Southgate would have plenty of time to bowl Hertford out. Sandun Dias suffered the indignity of conceding 100 runs. Chris Marques had the misfortune to strain his knee and had to be carried from the field. Hertford's reply got off to a disastrous start with Jack Anderson and Nick Marques both back in the pavilion in the third over without scoring. Dias came in and was determined to have his revenge. His first two scoring shots were sixes and he raced to 50 in 20 balls. 27 balls later he had reached 100 with Alex Lodge keeping him company, playing steadily and with some fine shots of his own. Dias continued to play his shots, mixing towering straight drives, blistering cover drives and pulls to leg as he struck 18 fours and 12 sixes in an innings of 183. While he was batting, Hertford looked like overhauling their target but he was caught on the long off boundary by Blackmore off Carr and a collapse followed. 247-4 became 257-8 before Will Bancroft and the tail set about recovering the situation. Mitchell Perry (12) gave Bancroft good support. Bancroft began to find the boundary with some excellent shorts but the innings came to a close when Chris Thompson was slow to respond to Bancroft's call and was run out. Chris Marques was unable to bat. 674 runs in the day. An aggregate only exceeded once in Hertford's history, back in 1906. A feast for the spectators if not fun for the poor bowlers. Sandun Dias was judged man of the match by umpires Bob Cole and David Gilbert

Bowling O M R W Nb Wd Scott Ruskin 26.1 4 104 7 0 0 Josh Tooth 5 1 21 0 0 0 Sandun Dias 12 1 53 1 7 0 Tom Bancroft 10 1 26 2 0 0 Firsts win thriller After a long period, nine games, without a win the 1st XI won an exciting fluctuating game with Sawbridgeworth by just two runs. Ryan Cunningham tried to smash Ruskin for a six to win the game only to hole out to Tom Bancroft running round from long off. Needless to say the team were ecstatic. The game started well for Hertford with a fifty partnership between Steve Riddle and Tom Bancroft which saw Andy Richardson given some harsh treatment. The introduction of Ryan Cunningham brought about Riddle's down fall, trying to give him the charge he was stumped by Greenall for 29. Chris Box, now playing as a batsman, joined Bancroft and initially seemed confused by Cunningham's spin. He eventually took a single to get to the other end and took 10 of the next over from Reed. Bancroft was also playing with care as Hertford attempted to build their innings. Another maiden from Cunningham - his first six overs cost one run - seemed to be developing but Box spotted one to hit depositing it in the carpark. That took the pressure off and the pair launched into Reed's next over, taking 14 off it. Richardson was brought back from the school end and treated Box to a spell of fast short pitched bowling which he mostly swayed out of the way off, apart from one ball which caught him full on the chest. At lunch Hertford were in the unaccustomed position of 118-1 with Box on 41 and Bancroft on 38. A good total looked on the cards. The partnership continued for a quarter of an hour after lunch until Box got a fine edge on an innocuous first ball from Rudkin and was caught by the keeper down the legside. His 62 had taken 88 balls and contained nine fours and two sixes. 143-2 was a perfect time for Sandun Dias to play one his sparkling innings and Hertford to end up close to three hundred. Instead there was a collapse as first Bancroft was stumped off Cunningham three short of a well deserved fifty. In the bowler's next over Ollie Ray was trapped lbw. In the next over Richardson, returning for his third spell, had a double strike. He posted a man at deep square leg and Dias duly obliged by top edging the ball to him, out for 14 and Hertford supporters were dismayed. One run later Scott Ruskin was lbw to Richardson and the Sawbridgeworth players showed their delight. Jack Anderson was bemused by Cunningham and left a ball which bowled him and it was up to skipper Darby to marshal the tail. He lost Will Bancroft for 9 and Rob Morley for one but added 18 for the last wicket before Josh Tooth was caught off Cunningham. Darby took a blow from Richardson on his arm but still managed to hit two fours in revenge and six off Cunningham as he ended on 25*. He was then taken to A&E where his arm was found to be broken. Ruskin took over as skipper. Cunningham ended with 6-51, Richardson 3-63 but by being dismissed in the 55th over, Hertford had handed an extra five overs to their opponents. The general consensus was that Hertford were at least 50 short. Sawbridgeworth's innings started in similar vein to Hertford's with a fifty partnership between Danny Wilson and Ashman. Ruskin had opened with himself and Josh Tooth but it took the introduction of Dias to break the stand, having Ashman caught by keeper Will Bancroft for 15. Ruskin switched ends and found the pavilion end more to his liking though runs were still coming relatively easy as Wilson and Marshall took Sawbridgeworth over the 100 mark. Hertford dropped two catches, on very difficult and one straightforward and seemed intent on maintaining their `unwinning’ run. A double strike on 110 changed that when in the same over Ruskin had Wilson caught in the deep by Anderson and, the batsmen having crossed, trapped Marshall lbw. With two fresh batsmen at the crease Hertford needed to apply pressure. The young pair were not fazed by this and Rudkin in particular unleashed some excellent drives as they saw the 150 up. Another lbw to Ruskin broke the stand at 155 with with 60 wanted and six wickets left Sawbridgeworth were clear favourites. Jones was well caught by Riddle and Dias held on to another catch to dismiss the dangerous Rudkin for 35, both off Ruskin. 166-6 and Hertford were in with a good chance. Ruskin had taken five of the first six wickets and turned to Bancroft for support. He obliged, bowling Greenall, 168-7. Richardson and Reed then set about reversing the situation and while Richardson was at the crease Sawbridgeworth were the most likely winners. With the total on 197 Bancroft found the edge rather than the middle of Richardson's bat and his brother, Will, duly took the catch. Reed went lbw to Ruskin - 203-9. The next overs were played out almost in silence as the spectators were gripped by the drama. Ryan Cunningham shuns singles so Ruskin kept the field out and was duly rewarded. Ruskin finished with 7-104, Hertford's joy at this unexpected win was tempered by the news that their skipper Rob Darby will be out of action for the rest of the season. The Darby family are not having much luck - his wife Sally fell and broke her knee cap when eight months pregnant about eight weeks ago. With a game as tense as this who needs Twenty/twenty. Hertford climbed off the bottom with this win and are now 13 points above bottom club Hemel Hempstead.

However time lost through injury, lost balls and rain took too much out of the game and the 10 over difference in the innings proved to be too great a hurdle for Hertford. Stevenage batted on winning the toss and after a few early scares, including a missed chance, their openers gave them a steady start. However accurate bowling from Scott Ruskin and Tom Bancroft restricted the scoring rate as the pair took 26 overs to put on 80. Hertford's perseverance was then rewarded when Ruskin trapped Sikander in front of the stumps and next over Sandun Dias caught Bayes for a duck off Bancroft's bowling. Ahmed joined Brown and the pair restored Stevenage's fortunes. For the half hour or so before lunch Hertford were handicapped with a wet ball from light drizzle. Resuming after lunch on 123 for 2, the Stevenage pair looked in control. Then, following a 15 minute break for rain, Ruskin won his second lbw decision, dismissing Brown for 70 with the total on 143. Kamzi and Seneviratne both tried to up the tempo and both perished to Fairhurst and Bancroft respectively, but at the other end Ahmed was batting very sensibly. He had reached 90 when the innings closed after 58 overs and had guided his team to 257 for 6. Hertford soon lost Steve Riddle but Tom Bancroft and Chris Box, again revelling in his new position at first wicket down, were soon in their stride. Although Bancroft was caught behind off Ali with the total on 70, Hertford were scoring faster than Stevenage had at the same stage. Dias then joined Box and Hertford looked like putting in e real challenge. But in the 34th over with the score on 136, Box pulled a calf muscle. He was able to continue, but needed a runner. This caused the usual disruption and it was not long before Dias ran himself out just when Hertford appeared to be taking control. Box continued to find the boundary but was not able to move well enough to work the bowling for the ones and twos. As a result the asking rate grew and it was clear that skipper Ruskin did not want to risk defeat. Although Box was the victim of another run out just before the end of the innings Hertford reached 203 for 4 at close of play. Box's 100 minute innings of 85 included two 6s and twelve 4s.

Set a target of 195, Hemantha Abeywickrema and Will Gilbert gave Hertford a brisk start, the fifty coming up in 9 overs, Gilbert being particularly severe with his square cut on anything short. Middleditch broke the partnership when it had reached 89 in the 16th over, Abeywickrema departing bowled for 38. This brought Jack Anderson to the wicket and the scoring rate immediately accelerated. Gilbert reached his 50 after just over an hour's batting and then proceeded to clear the boundary twice. Meanwhile after a few exploratory singles, Anderson reached the boundary with eleven successive scoring shots including one six to reach his 50 in just 29 minutes. Moments later the game was over with the Hertford pair putting on 107 runs in just 9 overs or 32 minutes, Anderson finishing the game by taking 18 runs off the five balls that Culleton bowled. Earlier, Middleditch had held the Hitchin innings together, receiving little support until Stratton joined him with the score on 124 for 6. At that stage he had scored the bulk of the Hitchin runs, having reached his 50 in 84 minutes. The seventh wicket pair then added 56 in 30 minutes with Stratton hitting two huge sixes, before skipper Tom Bancroft finally brought himself on. In his first over he bowled Middleditch for 109 and three balls later took a second wicket to make Hitchin 180 for 8. Two over later the innings closed on 194 for 8 off the allotted 45 overs.

The decision immediately looked to be the right one as the ball moved and leapt off the pitch giving the Hemel bowlers every assistance. Runs were hard to come by but until the 24th over Hertford had only lost one wicket, Tom Bancroft caught at slip for 11. With the score on 55 Hertford suffered a triple shock as first Chris Box went for 13 caught at gulley for 13 off a ball from Nick Hodgins he should either have left or hit a lot harder. Steve Benford followed without scoring in the bowler's next over caught at silly mid off by Hamish Ilangaratne. To compound the misfortune, Steve Riddle, trying to shake off the shackles was also caught for 14. It was time for dogged defence and for a while Krishan Canagasabey and Scott Ruskin kept the Hemel bowlers at bay and lunch was taken after 36 overs with the score on 70-4. Post lunch, runs were a priority but so also was using up the 60 overs. Ruskin's patience finally gave way and Hodgins claimed his third wicket. Hodgins' had bowled 13 overs and conceded just eight runs at this stage and appeared virtually unplayable. Jack Anderson `ruined' his figures when he struck him for a six to open his account. The score progressed to 105 before Brett Penny, returning for a second spell bowled Canagasabey for 21. Anderson then tried to loft Hodgins out of the ground again but fell short, Duncan Howard taking the catch. It was now a question of how many the tail could scrape together. They managed to push the score to 133 and use up 59 overs. Hodgins finished with 4-33 off 22 overs but was pipped by Penny who ended with 5-48. As the Hertford innings ended the batsmen were being less troubled with bounce and movement off the pitch. Tom Bancroft's opening overs gave the Hemel openers something to think about but they were in no hurry and soon the wicket was playing much easier. The opening stand was broken at 36 when James Potten was bowled by Lee Beskeen but from then on the batsmen were in charge. After 20 overs, Hemel were 53-1, at the same stage Hertford were 54-1. Hemel avoided the troubles that struck Hertford and cruised on, Rick Mohamed was finding the boundary frequently and outscored his partner Ilangaratne. The pair took the total to 125 before Josh Tooth got one past Ilangaratne but the game was then over. Mohamed lofted Steve Riddle over long off for a six to take his score to 55 and his team to a comfortable victory. Hertford drop back to the bottom of the table, 2 points behind Langleybury and seven behind Hemel. Next week they take on Potters Bar who lead the table by 8 points and the last two matches are away to Langleybury and home to North Mymms.

The talented visitors scored 230 for 8 in their 45 overs and Hertford had been fortunate to run out one of their best batsmen, opener & skipper Rickets, for only 27 just after he had hit Josh Tooth into the Simon Balle grounds. The most effective Hertford bowlers were George Pavey with 2 for 28 and Tom Bancroft, who came on late and took 2 for 8 from three overs. Hertford never recoverd from a dreadful start. The first three wickets fell for 20 and 34 for 5 soon became 43 for 7. At that stage only Bancroft with 12 had reached double figures. Josh Tooth with two sixes showed some defiance and George Pavey also batted well for a short time, but it was soon over. Martyn ended with 5 for 23 and Hertford were all out for 89.

Chasing the visitors' total of 276 for 6 declared, Hertford's early batsmen had no answer to the pace of Nick Walker, who took 5 for 30. Paul McGee picked up three wickets and then Salim Hussain mopped up the tail. Only Tom Bancroft, brother Will and debutant Rob Slater occupied the crease for any significant time, although Josh Tooth did hit Walker for a defiant four and six in one over. Put in to bat, Potters Bar got off to a brisk start and were soon up to four an over. Scott Ruskin slowed the run a rate a bit, but although Tooth bowled the dangerous Gale in his first over De Silva soon took a liking to his bowling. Ruskin then struck twice, getting Stead lbw and having de Silva caught behind, to make Potters Bar 124 for 3. Then for half an hour either side of lunch, Nick Walker made hay. In his 48 ball innings he struck seven sixes and three fours before Rob Slater bowled him for 73. That made the visitors 239 for 5 and four overs later they declared on 276 for 6.

Umpires Richard Goodfellow Alan Wells Scorers Gerry Wilkinson Brian Box Win lifts Hertford Hertford's fourth league win of the season lifted them to 8th in the table, 3 points above Hemel Hempstead who go to Sawbridgeworth next week and nine above today's opponents Langleybury who end their programme with a visit to Bishop's Stortford. Hertford's last game is at home against North Mymms. Neither of the opponents listed above have anything to play for, apart from their own pride of course. Winning the toss was crucial and Scott Ruskin did just that and sent Langleybury in to bat. Seamers Box and Slater were economical but failed to get a breakthrough and after 14 overs Ruskin brought himself on for what looked like being a long spell. In his second over he had a double strike, removing opposing skipper Cooper lbw for 30 and then having Amin very well caught, diving forward by Jack Anderson at gully. Godden was dropped off his own bowling by Richard Cordingley but Ruskin then showed how it should be done, taking a sharp return catch to get rid of the other opener Oxley for 25. 68-3 was looking good for Hertford but Godden and Bashir settled in and pushed the total above the hundred mark. In the last over before lunch, Godden gave Hertford a fillip, driving the ball to long off where Chris Box took the catch to leave them on 116-4, Ruskin having taken all four. Elliot King had bowled an over before lunch and continued afterwards with his legspin and was rewarded with the wickets of Kazmi and Gunning in consecutive overs to leave Langleybury in trouble on 131-7. When Tom Bancroft ran out Williams at the bowlers end the score was 137-8 and Hertford were hoping for a rapid conclusion to the Langleybury innings. Ruskin persisted with himself and King but they had only one more success when Ruskin completed his five wicket haul by bowling Bashir for 63. Bashir's boundaries were confined to sixes, five, all off King who finished with 2-68. Ruskin ended on 5-50 as Langleybury used up their overs to finish on 203-8. Hertford's overs had been bowled quickly and so there was the prospect of more than 50 overs in return should they need them. Ruskin opened with Steve Riddle but was soon out, bowled by Godden for 2. Tom Bancroft and Steve Riddle then built up a useful partnership of 63 before Riddle was caught behind off Cheeseman for 38. He had looked in good nick and his leading role in the partnership had put Hertford ahead of the asking rate. Chris Box joined Bancroft and the pair had a charmed existence. Both gave chances, mostly difficult ones but none were taken. At tea Hertford were sitting pretty at 113-2 with Bancroft on 43* and Box on 23*. Shortly afterwards Bancroft completed his 50 and Langleybury heads started to fall. Cooper rang the changes with his bowlers but to no avail. Box started to unleash his searing drives as the partnership approached 100. Once this was achieved and his own 50 in the bag he went aerial with a six off Cheeseman. Bancroft called for a quick single and a direct hit woud have left Box with his fourth run out in six innings but the shy missed. However he was out soon afterwards, bowled by Kazmi for 59, made off 69 balls. There was just time for Krishan Canagasabey to stroke the ball around for a cameo ten as Hertford won with plenty of time to spare. Bancroft's innings, the bedrock of the victory, included 10 fours in his 81*. The partnership with Box added 119. Now for the last game and all to play for.

Umpires N Hall K Mills Scorers Brian Box Tony Gibbs Hertford fall 8 short Going into this game Hertford were three points ahead of Hemel Hempstead and nine above bottom placed Langleybury. To make sure of survival, points were required, possibly a minimum of 16 though both Hemel and Langlebury had difficult away games. Hertford's wicket had been covered of course against the tempests of the previous week but on removal it was seen that one of the side sheets protecting old wickets had a hole in it and consequentially water had seeped on to the protected wicket. Before a start could be made news came through that Hemel's game had been called off, giving them six points. A similar `result' at Hertford would ensure safety for the home club. Both teams were however keen to play and despite a two faced wicket, one end dry and the other wet, a start was made at 11.40. Winning the toss, Scott Ruskin thought for a while before opting to put Hemel in. Batting points may be hard to come by and to get the three needed would require a total of 200. Seven wickets would, however, do the trick. Hemel were soon in trouble losing three for 28 as Rob Slater picked up Rhys Wynne, brilliantly caught by Elliott King at square leg, and Andy Hicks, bowled for 6. Meanwhile Chris Box had trapped Mark Saxby lbw for 7. Slater's permitted six overs produced the excellent figures of 2-13. Tom Bancroft started economically but Neil Bamford gradually found his length to his liking and started picking off boundaries. Scott Ruskin had replaced Box and on the stroke of lunch had Kyle Claxton caught at short leg by King and Mymms went to dine at 56-4. Post lunch, Bamford launched into Bancroft with three fours in an over. Despite losing Russell Bennet next over, lbw to Ruskin, Bamford continued the assault, knocking Elliott King out of the attack after one over. Five off the next Ruskin over was the last of his runs as he was caught behind by Will Bancroft off Josh Tooth for 45. Next over Ruskin got another and then Tooth picked up his second and Mymms were 94-8. Patience was then exercised by the batsmen as they eschewed all risk, content to use up overs. Tooth picked up another couple to end with 4-13 off 8.1 overs and Ruskin finished with 3-21. Mymms total of 116 was short of the umpires' reckoning of 150 being a good score. Hertford had, of course, secured their league status for next season by gaining five points but still wanted to end with a win. Steve Riddle started postively against Wynne while he and Ruskin treated Hicks with care. He was finding movement off the `dry' end of the pitch. It was Hicks who made the break through having Riddle caught at the wicket by Claxton for 8. Ruskin was uncharacteristically subdued, his attempts at expansive shots largely restricted to playing the air and he went in Hicks' sixth over, bowled for 2. Chris Box joined Tom Bancroft and the pair started as they had left off the previous week but when, after a rain break of 16 minutes, they had taken the Hertford total to the half-way mark Box edged Hicks to Oram at slip off Hicks. Hertford went to tea at 63-3, still feeling confident. Tea disagreed with them, for afterwards the middle order became mesmerised by Mark Saxby, bowling into the wet end. In three overs he removed Ollie Ray, Jack Anderson and Tom Bancroft and Hicks accounted for King. 63-3 had become 64-7. Will Bancroft and Rob Slater attempted a repair job but Saxby trapped Bancroft lbw for 4. After six overs he had 4-6. This became 5-7 off eight when Rob Fairhurst was bowled, 82-9. Josh Tooth does not believe in defence but in his partner he had in Rob Slater, a good batsmen who had come to terms with the challenge and the wicket. Slater took most of the strike and the score inched upwards. Tooth took a fancy to Hicks and struck him consecutively for a four and a six. This took the score to 101. With overs to spare, singles would have done the job - but there was always the risk of getting out. Tooth opted to lift Saxby over midwicket but fell a few yards short and Hertford were eight short. Saxby finished with 6-13, Hicks 4-49. Hertford's points haul matched an abandoned game, but a good game had been played. All other matches in the division were abandoned and Hertford escaped relegation by nine points. Mymms moved one place up the table. Hertford will need to chase these games down if they are not to have similar problems next year, the game was theirs to win - and lose.

The assembled members and guests, including the Mayor of Hertford, Deputy Mayor of Broxbourne and various other dignitaries, gathered for the celebration lunch were treated to a feast of batting as the teams battled out a high scoring draw. Batting first Hertford lost Krishan Canagasabey for just three with only ten on the board. Sandun Dias then treated the crowd to a display of stroke play which saw him race to 111 in 74 minutes, being caught off Sammy Rosser with lunch still 25 minutes away. Elliot King was also batting beautifully, though not so flamboyantly, and he and Scott Ruskin saw Hertford to lunch with the score on 177-2. Ruskin fell for 15 soon after lunch and Rob Darby and King then added 61 for the fourth wicket before King was bowled for an excellent 75. Darby pushed the run rate up and declared the Hertford innings closed at 317-6 with his score on 84 not out. Sammy Rosser with 4-81 was the most successful Broxbourne bowler on a day when the batsmen definitely had the upper hand. Broxbourne had their answer to Dias in the form of Lewis who plays for Trinidad and Tobago. He took a liking to Hertford's seam attack of Chris Box and Niz Mohammed, being particularly severe on the former with a succession of scintillating boundary shots. The introduction of Peter Bell took the pace of the ball and the run rate fell. Bell made a double strike removing the patient Francis, lbw, and then having the dangerous Lewis well caught by Mohammed for 105. This took the steam out of the Broxbourne innings and at tea they were 163-3. The spinners took over after tea to tempt the Broxbourne batsmen and though both King and Ruskin got two wickets Broxbourne got the draw with ease, ending a most enteraining game 36 runs adrift with two wickets left. The gathering crown then enjoyed a Jazz Evening and barbecue to celebrate the anniversary in style.

Hertford and County teams

Hertford's celebrations of their 125th anniversary of cricket at ended with a game against a Hertfordshire XI. The county also played at in 1883 when they lost to Essex. The match was a two-day game to be played to the old championship rules with first innings limited to 55 overs. In the event, rain on the first morning prevented play before lunch and the first innings' overs were reduced to 30. Hertfordshire batted first and immediately lost Martin James, caught behind by Will Bancroft off Rob Slater without scoring. Slater struck again to remove Hamesh ilangaratne for 13 but by then Ward - playing his last game for the county - was in good form despite carrying an injury. He did manage to hobble a couple of twos but dealt many in boundaries as he ran up a run a ball 50. Scott Ruskin finally accounted for Ward and took out the County middle order ending with 5-42. Hertfordshire closed their 30 overs on 134-8. Steve Riddle and Ruskin got Hertford off to an excellent start with an opening partnership of 87 before Ruskin was run out for 43. This occurred in the seventeenth over and Hertford looked like getting a useful first innings lead. However the next six overs produced just six runs as both Riddle and Chris Box found it difficult to find the gaps. Then the runs started to flow again and the score progressed to 137 in the 27th over when suddenly four wickets fell. Box had slammed Clements for two huge straight sixes and Riddle had given him similar treatment. The bowler then had his revenge bowling Box and then Seb Franke-Matthecke next ball. In the next over Jamie Southgate had Riddle caught for a fine 57 which included seven fours and three sixes. Two balls later he had Mark Costin stumped without scoring and Hertford's ambitions were somewhat curtailed. Lusty blows from Josh Tooth and a cameo from Elliott King took Hertford to a lead of 24 when their innings closed. It was serious business the following day when the County set about eradicating Hertford's lead and building a challenging target. The first was achieved with a century partnership between Ilangaratne and Nick Gilbert with skipper Gilbert leading the way. Box opened the bowling for Hertford, his first bowl for over a month and four steady overs will have pleased his skipper. Slater was also economical and it was not until the fifteenth over that the scoring rate moved above three an over. Mitchell Perry came in for some harsh treatment as Gilbert upped the scoring rate and Ruskin turned to spin with himself and Costin. The latter got the breakthrough with his fourth ball, trapping Gilbert lbw. Ruskin won a similar decision to dismiss Ilangaratne. The County middle order all got going, Craig Weston fell one short of a half century as the lead increased steadily. There was time for Ward to come in at number seven for his last innings. The teams lined up to applaud him to the crease. His contribution to Hertfordshire cricket over twelve years has been magnificent. He delighted the spectators with a trademark six before being bowled by Richard Cordingley - another Hertford bowler making a come back - and the County declared on 267-7. Hertford had 48 overs to get 244, a big ask as sports' writers say. They were also without Franke- Matthecke, brought in to bolster the side in the absence of Sandun Dias, who cried off. Losing Riddle and Ruskin to a hostile spell form Paul O'Reilly was not the start they wanted. Box and Costin settled in and were looking set when Costin called Box for an impossible third run and he was not in the frame. Since moving up the batting order Box has been run out three times in five innings. He needs to add NO to his vocabulary. A collapse ensued and Hertford subsided to the bowling of Jamie Southgate and Craig Weston. At 64-8 it looked as though a face saving 100 was out of the question but sensible batting by Rob Slater and Will Bancroft took them to 97 before Bancroft went for 19. Slater saw the 100 up before being stumped. During the two days the club entertained guests from Hertfordshire and on the second day the marquee was full as club members also took the last opportunity of the season to have a convivial lunch. Mark Prisk, Hertford's MP, called in on Sunday and enjoyed an afternoon with the club. It would have been nice had Hertford's second innings lasted longer and come closer to the target but that did not detract from an excellent couple of days. In retrospect the match summed up Hertford's season – some high points and quite a few low ones. NB - Seb Franke-Mattheke batted at four in the first innings, a first ball duck, bowled by Clements. When he cried off the second day Alex Siegmund took his place and was named in the Hertford side. So that Alex does not get credited with another duck, the entry was deleted from the first innings. The fall of wicket when he was out shows the name Alex Siegmund. Everything else is correct.
