4 | SERAPHIC FIRE: 2017 - 2018 SEASON SERAPHIC FIRE

Led by Founder and Artistic Director Patrick Dupré Quigley, Seraphic Fire brings top ensemble singers and instrumentalists from around the country to perform repertoire ranging from Gregorian chant and Baroque masterpieces to Mahler and newly commissioned works by this country’s leading composers . Two of the ensemble’s recordings, Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem and A Seraphic Fire Christmas, were nominated for 2012 GRAMMY® Awards, making Seraphic Fire the only choral ensemble in North or South America to be nominated that year and the only classical ensemble in the world to be nominated for two separate projects .

Seraphic Fire continues to put South Florida at the center of artistic innovation during its 2017 - 2018 Season through masterworks of cultural significance like Brahms’ timelessLiebeslieder Waltzes, as well as through high-quality under-performed music like David Lang’s the little match girl passion . Guest appearances include collaborations with Lorelei Ensemble Artistic Director Beth Willer and Boston’s Back Bay Chorale Music Director Scott Allen Jarrett .

Recognized for its “spellbinding, hypnotic” sound (South Florida Classical Review), Seraphic Fire’s artistic accomplishments have also translated to orchestral collaborations with The Cleveland Orchestra and New World Symphony, and chart-topping album sales . The ensemble’s September 2014 release, Reincarnations: A Century of American Choral Music, soared to No .6 on the Billboard Traditional Classical Chart and the ensemble’s recording of Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem debuted at No .7 on the Billboard Traditional Classical Chart .

Passio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Arvo Pärt (b . 1935) secundum Joannem

Chorus: Chorus: Passio Domini nostri Jesu Christi The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ secundum Joannem . according to St . John .

Evangelist: Evangelist: Haec cum dixisset Jesus, When Jesus had spoken these words, egressus est cum discipulis suis he departed with his disciples trans torrentem Cedron, ubi erat hortus, over the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, in quem introivit ipse et discipuli ejus . into which he entered with his disciples . Sciebat autem et Judas, qui tradebat eum, But Judas, who betrayed him, locum: quia frequenter Jesus convenerat illuc also knew the place: because Jesus had often cum discipulis suis . met there together with his disciples . Judas ergo cum accepisset cohortem, Judas then, having received a band of soldiers et a pontificibus and servants from the chief priests et Pharisaeis ministros, and the Pharisees, venit illuc cum laternis, et facibus, et armis . came with lanterns, and torches, and weapons . Jesus itaque sciens omnia, quae ventura erant Jesus, knowing all that was about super eum processit, et dixit eis: to happen to him, went forth and said to them:

Jesus: Jesus: Quem quaeritis? Whom do you seek?

Evangelist: Evangelist: Responderunt ei: They answered him:

Chorus: Chorus: Jesum Nazarenum . Jesus of Nazareth .

Evangelist: Evangelist: Dicit eis Jesus: Jesus said to them:

Jesus: Jesus: Ego sum . I am he .

Evangelist: Evangelist: Stabat autem et Judas, qui tradebat eum, Now Judas, who betrayed him, cum ipsis . was also standing with them . Ut ergo dixit eis: Ego sum, As soon as he had said to them: I am he, abierunt retrorsum, et ceciderunt in terram . they moved backward, and fell to the ground . Iterum ergo interrogavit eos: Then again he questioned them:

12 | SERAPHIC FIRE: 2017 - 2018 SEASON Jesus: Jesus: Quem quaeritis? Whom do you seek?

Evangelist: Evangelist: Illi autem dixerunt: And they said:

Chorus: Chorus: Jesum Nazarenum . Jesus of Nazareth .

Evangelist: Evangelist: Respondit Jesus: Jesus answered:

Jesus: Jesus: Dixi vobis, quia ego sum: I have told you that I am he: si ergo me quaeritis, sinite hos abire . so if you seek me, let these men go their way .

Evangelist: Evangelist: Ut impleretur sermo, quem dixit: So that the word might be fulfilled, which he said: quia quos dedisti mihi, Of those whom you have given to me, non perdidi ex eis quemquam . I have not lost any of them . Simon ergo Petrus habens gladium eduxit eum, Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, et percussit pontificis servum and struck the servant of the high priest et abscidit auriculam ejus dexteram . and cut off his right ear . Erat autem nomen servo Malchus . And the name of the servant was Malchus . Dixit ergo Jesus Petro: Therefore, Jesus said to Peter:

Jesus: Jesus: Mitte gladium in vaginam . Set your sword into its scabbard . Calicem, quem dedit mihi Pater, The chalice, which my Father has given me, non bibam illum? should I not drink it?

Evangelist: Evangelist: Cohors ergo, et tribunus, Then the band, and the tribune, et ministri Judæorum comprehenderunt Jesum, and the servants of the Jews took Jesus, et ligaverunt eum . and bound him . Et adduxerunt eum ad Annam primum, And they led him away, first to Annas, erat enim socer Caiphæ, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, qui erat pontifex anni illius . who was the high priest of that year . Erat autem Caiphas, Now Caiphas was the one qui consilium dederat Judæis: who had given the counsel to the Jews: quia expedit unum hominem mori pro populo . that it was best for one man to die for the people . Sequebatur autem Jesum Simon Petrus, And Simon Peter followed Jesus, et alius discipulus . as did another disciple .

ARVO PÄRT: PASSIO | 13 TEXTS & TRANSLATIONS

Discipulus autem ille erat notus pontifici, That disciple was known to the high priest, et introivit cum Jesu in atrium pontificis . and entered with Jesus into the high priest’s court . Petrus autem stabat ad ostium foris . But Peter stood at the door outside the entrance . Exivit ergo discipulus alius, The other disciple therefore, qui erat notus pontifici, who was known to the high priest, et dixit ostiariæ: et introduxit Petrum . went out to the doorkeeper and brought in Peter . Dicit ergo Petro ancilla ostiaria: Then the woman keeping the door said to Peter:

Chorus: Chorus: Numquid et tu ex discipulis es hominis istius? Are you not also one of this man’s disciples?

Evangelist: Evangelist: Dicit ille: He said:

Petrus: Petrus: Non sum . I am not .

Evangelist: Evangelist: Stabant autem servi, et ministri ad prunas, Now the servants and ministers stood at a fire, quia frigus erat, et calefiebant se . because it was cold, and warmed themselves . Erat autem cum eis et Petrus stans, And Peter was standing with them also, et calefaciens se . and warming himself . Pontifex ergo interrogavit Jesum Then the high priest questioned Jesus de discipulis suis, et de doctrina ejus . about his disciples and about his doctrine . Respondit ei Jesus: Jesus answered him:

Jesus: Jesus: Ego palam locutus sum mundo: I have spoken openly to the world: ego semper docui in synagoga, I have always taught in the synagogue et in templo, quo omnes Judæi conveniunt, and in the temple, where all the Jews meet, et in occulto locutus sum nihil . and in secret I have spoken nothing . Quid me interrogas? Why do you question me? Interroga eos, qui audierunt Ask those who have heard quid locutus sim ipsis: what I have spoken to them: ecce hi sciunt quæ dixerim ego . behold, they know what things I have said .

Evangelist: Evangelist: Hæc autem cum dixisset, unus assistens When he had said this, one of the servants ministrorum dedit alapam Jesu, dicens: standing nearby struck Jesus, saying:

Chorus: Chorus: Sic respondes pontifici? Is this the way you answer the high priest?

14 | SERAPHIC FIRE: 2017 - 2018 SEASON w

Evangelist: Evangelist: Respondit ei Jesus: Jesus answered him:

Jesus: Jesus: Si male locutus sum, testimonium perhibe de malo; If I have spoken evil, give testimony of the evil; si autem bene, quid me cædis? but if I spoken correctly, why do you strike me?

Evangelist: Evangelist: Et misit eum Annas ligatum And Annas sent him bound ad Caipham pontificem . to Caiphas the high priest . Erat autem Simon Petrus stans et calefaciens se . Now Simon Peter was standing, warming himself . Dixerunt ergo ei: They said to him:

Chorus: Chorus: Numquid et tu ex discipulis ejus es? Are you not also one of his disciples?

Evangelist: Evangelist: Negavit ille, et dixit: He denied it, and said:

Petrus: Petrus: Non sum . I am not .

Evangelist: Evangelist: Dicit ei unus ex servis pontificis, One of the servants of the high priest, cognatus ejus, a realtive to him whose ear Peter cut off, cujus abscidit Petrus auriculam: said to him:

Chorus: Chorus: Nonne ego te vidi in horto cum illo? Did I not see thee in the garden with him?

Evangelist: Evangelist: Iterum ergo negavit Petrus, Again Peter denied it, et statim gallus cantavit . and immediately the rooster crowed . Adducunt ergo Jesum a Caipha in prætorium . Then they led Jesus from Caiphas to the praetorium . Erat autem mane: Now it was morning: et ipsi non introierunt in prætorium, and so they did not enter into the praetorium, ut non contaminarentur, that they might not be defiled, sed ut manducarent Pascha . but that they might eat the Passover . Exivit ergo Pilatus ad eos foras, et dixit: Pilate therefore went out to them, and said:

Evangelist: Evangelist: Dixit ergo eis Pilatus: Pilate therefore said to them:

Pilatus: Pilate: Numquid ego Judæus sum? Am I a Jew? Gens tua et pontifices Your own nation and the chief priests tradiderunt te mihi: have handed you over to me . quid fecisti? What have you done?

Evangelist: Evangelist: Respondit Jesus: Jesus answered:

Jesus: Jesus: Regnum meum non est de mundo . My kingdom is not of this world . Si ex hoc mundo esset regnum meum, If my kingdom were of this world, ministri mei utique decertarent, my servants would certainly strive ut non traderer Judæis: so that I would not be handed over to the Jews: nunc autem regnum meum non est hinc . but my kingdom is not from here .

Evangelist: Evangelist: Dixit itaque ei Pilatus: Pilate therefore said to him:

Pilatus: Pilate: Ergo rex es tu? You are a King, then?

Evangelist: Evangelist: Respondit Jesus: Jesus answered:

Jesus: Jesus: Tu dicis quia rex sum ego . You say that I am a King . Ego in hoc natus sum, For this was I born, et ad hoc veni in mundum: and for this I came into the world: ut testimonium perhibeam veritati . that I should give testimony of the truth . “I’m exceptionally grateful to be a part of Seraphic Fire’s Ensemble Artist Program. In the months leading up to this season, I battled physical and emotional fallout from a motorcycle accident that nearly claimed my life. Making music as part of this program has become as integral to my recovery as my physical therapy, and I look forward to creating beautiful art among America’s finest musicians.” Garrett Schoonover, Bass
