A Brief History of Christ Church MEDIEVAL PERIOD Christ Church was founded in 1546, and there had been a college here since 1525, but prior to the Dissolution of the monasteries, the site was occupied by a priory dedicated to the memory of St Frideswide, the patron saint of both university and city. St Frideswide, a noble Saxon lady, founded a nunnery for herself as head and for twelve more noble virgin ladies sometime towards the end of the seventh century. She was, however, pursued by Algar, prince of Leicester, for her hand in marriage. She refused his frequent approaches which became more and more desperate. Frideswide and her ladies, forewarned miraculously of yet another attempt by Algar, fled up river to hide. She stayed away some years, settling at Binsey, where she performed healing miracles. On returning to Oxford, Frideswide found that Algar was as persistent as ever, laying siege to the town in order to capture his bride. Frideswide called down blindness on Algar who eventually repented of his ways, and left Frideswide to her devotions. Frideswide died in about 737, and was canonised in 1480. Long before this, though, pilgrims came to her shrine in the priory church which was now populated by Augustinian canons. Nothing remains of Frideswide’s nunnery, and little - just a few stones - of the Saxon church but the cathedral and the buildings around the cloister are the oldest on the site. Her story is pictured in cartoon form by Burne-Jones in one of the windows in the cathedral. One of the gifts made to the priory was the meadow between Christ Church and the Thames and Cherwell rivers; Lady Montacute gave the land to maintain her chantry which lay in the Lady Chapel close to St Frideswide’s shrine. -

A Short History of WHEATLEY STONE By W. O. HASSALL ILLUSTRATED BY PETER TYSOE 1955 Printed at the Oxford School of Art WHEATLEY STONE The earliest quarry at Wheatley to be named in the records is called Chalgrove, but it is not to be confused with the famous field of the same name where John Hampden was mortally wounded and which was transformed into an aerodrome during the war. Chalgrove in Wheatley lies on the edge of Wheatley West field, near the boundary of Shotover Park on the south side of the road from London to High Wycombe, opposite a turning to Forest Hill and Islip where a modern quarry is worked for lime, six miles East of Oxford. The name of Challrove in Wheatley is almost forgotten, except by the elderly, though the name appears in the Rate books. The exact position is marked in a map of 1593 at All Souls College and grass covered depressions which mark the site are visible from the passing buses. The All Souls map shows that some of these depressions, a little further east, were called in Queen Elizabeth’s reign Glovers and Cleves pits. The Queen would have passed near them when she travelled as a prisoner from Woodstock to Rycot on a stormy day when the wind was so rough that her captors had to hold down her dress and later when she came in triumph to be welcomed by the City and University at Shotover, on her way to Oxford. The name Chaigrove is so old that under the spelling Ceorla graf it occurs in a charter from King Edwy dated A.D. -

DOES YOUR CHURCH HAVE WORK BY ONE OF THE GREATEST VICTORIAN ARCHITECTS? George Edmund Street Diocesan Church Building Society, and moved to Wantage. The job involved checking designs submitted by other architects, and brought him commissions of his own. Also in 1850 he made his first visit to the Continent, touring Northern France. He later published important books on Gothic architecture in Italy and Spain. The Diocese of Oxford is extraordinarily fortunate to possess so much of his work In 1852 he moved to Oxford. Important commissions included Cuddesdon College, in 1853, and All Saints, Boyne Hill, Maidenhead, in 1854. In the next year Street moved to London, but he continued to check designs for the Oxford Diocesan Building Society, and to do extensive work in the Diocese, until his death in 1881. In Berkshire alone he worked on 34 churches, his contribution ranging from minor repairs to complete new buildings, and he built fifteen schools, eight parsonages, and one convent. The figures for Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire are similar. Street’s new churches are generally admired. They include both grand town churches, like All Saints, Boyne Hill, and SS Philip and James, Oxford (no longer in use for worship), and remarkable country churches such as Fawley and Brightwalton in Berkshire, Filkins and Milton- under-Wychwood in Oxfordshire, and Westcott and New Bradwell in Buckinghamshire. There are still some people for whom Victorian church restoration is a matter for disapproval. The Wesleyan Enlightenment: Closing the gap between heart religion and reason in Eighteenth Century England by Timothy Wayne Holgerson B.M.E., Oral Roberts University, 1984 M.M.E., Wichita State University, 1986 M.A., Asbury Theological Seminary, 1999 M.A., Kansas State University, 2011 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2017 Abstract John Wesley (1703-1791) was an Anglican priest who became the leader of Wesleyan Methodism, a renewal movement within the Church of England that began in the late 1730s. Although Wesley was not isolated from his enlightened age, historians of the Enlightenment and theologians of John Wesley have only recently begun to consider Wesley in the historical context of the Enlightenment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between a man, John Wesley, and an intellectual movement, the Enlightenment. As a comparative history, this study will analyze the juxtaposition of two historiographies, Wesley studies and Enlightenment studies. Surprisingly, Wesley scholars did not study John Wesley as an important theologian until the mid-1960s. Moreover, because social historians in the 1970s began to explore the unique ways people experienced the Enlightenment in different local, regional and national contexts, the plausibility of an English Enlightenment emerged for the first time in the early 1980s. As a result, in the late 1980s, scholars began to integrate the study of John Wesley and the Enlightenment. In other words, historians and theologians began to consider Wesley as a serious thinker in the context of an English Enlightenment that was not hostile to Christianity. -

Beckley & Area Community Benefit Society Ltd Chairman’s Report to the Annual Members Meeting, 28 November 2018 Introduction: The introduction to my first Beckley & Area Community Benefit Society (BACBS) annual report, in November 2017, bears repetition with only minor editing: ‘BACBS was established in September 2016 in order to purchase The Abingdon Arms for the benefit of the community, and to secure its future as a thriving community-owned pub. It is now a welcoming free house which serves a range of local beers, good quality wine and soft drinks, and excellent freshly-cooked food prepared using locally sourced ingredients when possible. Our vision was, and is, for The Abingdon Arms to be at the heart of our community, accessible to all, a place to meet people, exchange ideas, and come together for recreational and cultural activities. In this way, BACBS aims to support a friendly, welcoming and cohesive community’. The Society’s second year of operation has seen both consolidation and exciting progress. BACBS is in good health, as will be evident from the Treasurer’s and Secretary’s reports. Highlights of the year include: The Abingdon Arms – Aimee Bronock, Joe Walton and their excellent front of house and kitchen teams have consolidated, then extended on the promise with which they commenced their tenancy of The Abingdon Arms in June 2017. It is once again a welcoming and vibrant country pub, serving both the local community and increasing numbers of visitors from further afield. The food, drinks and warm welcome they offer are greatly appreciated! In astonishingly short order, our tenants have achieved prestigious awards which affirm the quality of their stewardship of our community pub. -

It should be remembered that previous to 1752 the year was calculated as beginning on the 25th March, instead of the I St of January, so that a Marriage taking place on say 20th February, 1625, would be on that date in 1626 according to our reckoning ; but as the civil and ecclesiastical year were both used, this is sometimes expressed by 20th February, i62f. In all cases where the marriage is stated to have taken place by Licence, that fact is recorded, as the searcher thereby knows that further information as to age, parentage, and voca- tion of the parties is probably recoverable from the Allegations in the Archdeaconry or other ofifice from which the Licence was issued. -

Maddox John Wesley made a regular practice of recording in his diary the books that he was reading, which has been a significant resource for scholars in considering influences on his thought.1 If Charles Wesley kept such diary records, they have been lost to us. However, he provides another resource among his surviving manuscript materials that helps significantly in this regard. On at least four occasions Charles compiled manuscript catalogues of books that he owned, providing a fairly complete sense of his personal library around the year 1765. Indeed, these lists give us better records for Charles Wesley’s personal library than we have for the library of brother John.2 The earliest of Charles Wesley’s catalogues is found in MS Richmond Tracts.3 While this list is undated, several of the manuscript hymns that Wesley included in the volume focus on 1746, providing a likely time that he started compiling the list. Changes in the color of ink and size of pen make clear that this was a “growing” list, with additions being made into the early 1750s. The other three catalogues are grouped together in an untitled manuscript notebook containing an assortment of financial records and other materials related to Charles Wesley and his family.4 The first of these three lists is titled “Catalogue of Books, 1 Jan 1757.”5 Like the earlier list, this date indicates when the initial entries were made; both the publication date of some books on the list and Wesley’s inscriptions in surviving volumes make clear that he continued to add to the list over the next few years.
