Guggenheim and AMO / Rem Koolhaas Announce Research Project Culminating in February 2020 Exhibition Countryside: Future of the World to Examine Radical Changes Transforming the Nonurban Landscape (NEW YORK, NY—November 29, 2017)—The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, architect and urbanist Rem Koolhaas, and AMO, the think tank of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), will collaborate on a project exploring radical changes in the countryside, the vast nonurban areas of Earth. The project extends work underway by AMO / Koolhaas and students at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and will culminate in a rotunda exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in February 2020. Organized by Guggenheim Curator of Architecture and Digital Initiatives Troy Conrad Therrien, Founding Partner of OMA Rem Koolhaas, and AMO Director Samir Bantal, Countryside: Future of the World (working title) will present speculations about tomorrow through insights into the countryside of today. The exhibition will explore artificial intelligence and automation, the effects of genetic experimentation, political radicalization, mass and micro migration, large-scale territorial management, human-animal ecosystems, subsidies and tax incentives, the impact of the digital on the physical world, and other developments that are altering landscapes across the globe. “The Guggenheim has an appetite for experimentation and a founding belief in the transformative potential of art and architecture,” said Richard Armstrong, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation. -

Foster + Partners Bests Zaha Hadid and OMA in Competition to Build Park Avenue Office Tower BY KELLY CHAN | APRIL 3, 2012 | BLOUIN ART INFO We were just getting used to the idea of seeing a sensuous Zaha Hadid building on the corporate-modernist boulevard that is Manhattan’s Park Avenue, but looks like we’ll have to keep dreaming. An invited competition to design a new Park Avenue office building for L&L Holdings and Lemen Brothers Holdings pitted starchitect against starchitect (with a shortlist including Hadid and Rem Koolhaas’s firm OMA). In the end, Lord Norman Foster came out victorious. “Our aim is to create an exceptional building, both of its time and timeless, as well as being respectful of this context,” said Norman Foster in a statement, according to The Architects’ Newspaper. Foster described the building as “for the city and for the people that will work in it, setting a new standard for office design and providing an enduring landmark that befits its world-famous location.” The winning design (pictured left) is a three-tiered, 625,000-square-foot tower. With sky-high landscaped terraces, flexible floor plates, a sheltered street-level plaza, and LEED certification, the building does seem to reiterate some of the same principles seen in the Lever House and Seagram Building, Park Avenue’s current office tower icons, but with markedly updated standards. Only time will tell if Foster’s building can achieve the same timelessness as its mid-century predecessors, a feat that challenged a slew of architects as Park Avenue cultivated its corporate identity in the 1950s and 60s. -

[email protected] www.zaha-hadid.com Born in Baghdad, Iraq in 1950, Hadid studied mathematics at the American University of Beirut before moving to London in 1972 to attend the Architectural Introduction Association (AA) School where she was awarded the Diploma Prize in 1977. She founded Zaha Hadid Architects in 1979 and completed her first building, the Vitra Fire Station, Germany in 1993. Hadid taught at the AA School until 1987 and has since held numerous chairs and guest professorships at universities around the world. She is currently a professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and visiting professor of Architectural Design at Yale University. Working with senior office partner, Patrik Schumacher, Hadid’s interest lies in the rigorous interface between architecture, landscape, and geology as her practice integrates natural topography and human-made systems, leading to innovation with new technologies. The MAXXI: National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome, Italy and the London Aquatics Centre for the 2012 Olympic Games are excellent manifestos of Hadid’s quest for complex, fluid space. Previous seminal buildings such as the Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati and the Guangzhou Opera House in China have also been hailed as architecture that transforms our ideas of the future with new spatial concepts and dynamic, visionary forms. -

5 Six Canonical Projects by Rem Koolhaas has been part of the international avant-garde since the nineteen-seventies and has been named the Pritzker Rem Koolhaas Architecture Prize for the year 2000. This book, which builds on six canonical projects, traces the discursive practice analyse behind the design methods used by Koolhaas and his office + OMA. It uncovers recurring key themes—such as wall, void, tur montage, trajectory, infrastructure, and shape—that have tek structured this design discourse over the span of Koolhaas’s Essays on the History of Ideas oeuvre. The book moves beyond the six core pieces, as well: It explores how these identified thematic design principles archi manifest in other works by Koolhaas as both practical re- Ingrid Böck applications and further elaborations. In addition to Koolhaas’s individual genius, these textual and material layers are accounted for shaping the very context of his work’s relevance. By comparing the design principles with relevant concepts from the architectural Zeitgeist in which OMA has operated, the study moves beyond its specific subject—Rem Koolhaas—and provides novel insight into the broader history of architectural ideas. Athens Journal of Architecture - Volume 1, Issue 3 – Pages 221-236 Rem Koolhaas and Álvaro Siza in Asia: An Architectural Comparison By Shuenn-Ren Liou Rem Koolhaas (1944- ) and Álvaro Siza (1933- ) are two of the most significant living architects in contemporary architecture. They have been devoted to architectural creation for a long period of time and produced a great number of works of high quality and originality. It is not surprising that Koolhaas and Siza came to Asia for architectural practice in 2002 and 2005, respectively. In the past few decades, research on Koolhaas’ and Siza’s architectural works mainly focused on their works in Europe and America. Although there were some individual reports on Koolhaas’ and Siza’s activities and works in Asia, they lacked of systematic investigation and analysis, not to mention cross region comparisons. Being highly respected, the modification and/or transformation of their design ideas, thinking, processing, and making, i.e. their architectural strategies including design strategies and management strategies for Asian cultures and regions constitute important sources for exploration in the architectural history and theory. After the investigation on Siza’s architectural works in Asia (Liou, 2012, 2013, 2014a, 2014b), the present study attempts to extend the accumulated experiences and analyse the work of Koolhaas as a case subject, and furthermore to conduct comparative analysis on the style and design of the two architects. Specifically, in this paper, Koolhaas’ design strategies and management strategies for his Asian architectural works are studied. His design strategies include OMA’s design process, public urban space, architectural typology (high-rise building and theater), skin material, and plane material.
