Lithograph, hand colored. Printed Metz: Imprimerie, Lithographie et Fabrique d’Images de Dembour et Gangel, N.130. (Before 1852) . Ancestors of the modern circus A souvenir print of the famous Parisian Franconi equestrian circus with eight scenes of acrobats on horseback. The Franconi's theatrical circus influenced Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey. The Franconi troupe were not only wonderful horsemen - “veritable Centaurs-and jumpers, but also expressive mimes and elegant dancers of a kind rare in the modern circuses for they had been formed in the special schools for circus children.” (Marian Hannah Winter). Large oblong folio (13 1/2 in. x 18 3/4 in.). 16pp. text in French plus 56 mounted, tinted plates reproducing Appia's important set designs arranged in chronological order. Plates loose as issued, fine condition. In publisher's green cloth and boards portfolio (portfolio soiled and flaps defective) . One of the rarest of all modern books on scenography. This volume was done shortly after Appia's death. The beautiful plates provide the best record of Appia's work, since many were taken from Appia's drawings held in museums and private collections. His productions of Wagner's Walkyrie (1892), Tristan et Yseult (1896) and other Wagner operas are documented, as are his designs for the modern rhythmic dances of Jacques Dalcroze and Ibsen's Petit Eyolf, Orphee, King Lear, and Hamlet. Finally, there are a series of drawings from his Gluck Iphigenie operas. DontDelete $1,200 6 Bakst, Leon. ALS, May 28 1919 to Gabriele D’Annunzio .
