Rcguha's Deep Ecology
R.C.Guha’s Deep Ecology The respected radical journalist Kirkpatrick sale recently celebrated “the passion of a new and growing movement that has become disenchanted with the environmental establishment. Decrying the narrowly economic goals of mainstream environmentalism, this new movement aims at nothing less than a philosophical and cultural revolution in human attitudes toward nature. Ramchandra Guha develop a critique of deep ecology from the perspective of a sympathetic outsider. Ramchandra Guha’s treatment of deep ecology is primarily historical and sociological, rather than philosophical, in nature. He makes two main arguments : first, that deep ecology is uniquely American. Second, that the social consequences of putting deep ecology into practice on a worldwide basis are very grave indeed. The defining characteristics of deep ecology are fourfold. First, deep ecology argues that the environmental movement must shift from an “anthropocentric” to a “bio-centric” perspective. The anthropocentric------ bio-centric distinction is accepted as axiomatic by deep ecologists, it structures their discourse, and much of the present discussions remains mired within it. The second characteristic of deep ecology is its focus on the preservation of unsploilt wilderness and the restoration of degraded areas to a more pristine condition – to the relative neglect of other issues on the environmental agenda. Historically, it represents a playing out of the preservationist and utilitarian dichotomy that has plagued American environmentalism since the turn of the century. Morally, it is an imperative that follows from the bio-centric perspective ; other species of plants and animals, and nature itself ,have an intrinsic right to exist. And finally, the preservation of wilderness also turns on a scientific argument – viz.; the value of biological diversity in stabilizing ecological regimes and in retaining a gene pool for future generations. -

Williams School of Graduate Studies Copyright by Jesse Andrews 2017 All Rights Reserved Abstract A PRACTIUM ON UNCERTAINTY: CREATION OF AN HGIS DATABASE Jesse Andrews B.A., University of North Carolina Greensboro Chairperson: Kathleen Schroeder Integrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) historical sources and geospatial technology offers a fruitful new approach to mapping, analyzing, and modeling the past. This project employs sources freely available online to create a historical geodatabase of the A Line of the Mexican National Railroad circa 1910. The project utilizes satellite imagery, census data, historical maps, train schedules along with postcards and photography from the period, to reconstruct the rail line and its stations shortly before the Mexican Revolution. These sources are combined in a GIS to create a highly accurate map and associated historical database of the system as it existed in the first decade of the 20th Century. The database suggests the potential of future scholarship combining GIS software, satellite imagery, and online source materials. -

Environmental Studies and Utilitarian Ethics Brian G. Wolff University of Minnesota Conservation Biology Program,100 Ecology Building 1987 Upper Buford Circle, St. Paul, MN 55108 Email: [email protected] Abstract: Environmental ethicists have focused much attention on the limits of utilitarianism and have generally defined “environmental ethics” in a manner that treats utilitarian environmental ethics as an oxymoron. This is unfortunate because utilitarian ethics can support strong environmental policies, and environmental ethicists have not yet produced a contemporary environmental ethic with such broad appeal. I believe educators should define environmental ethics more broadly and teach utilitarian ethics in a non-pejorative fashion so that graduates of environmental studies and policy programs understand the merits of utilitarian arguments and can comfortably participate in the policymaking arena, where utilitarian ethics continue to play a dominant role. Vena, B.A., M.A. Marquette University, 2009 One of the unfortunate implications of industrialization and the rapid expansion of global commerce is the magnification of the impact that humans have on their environment. Exponential population growth, along with growing technological capabilities, has allowed human societies to alter their terrain in unprecedented and destructive ways. The cumulative effect has been significant to the point that the blame for widespread environmental degradation must be pinned squarely on human shoulders. Because of our dependence on these systems for survival, the threat to the environment is a threat to human life. The root of the ecological crisis is found in human attitudes and behaviors. In the late 1960’s it was suggested that Christianity was a key source of the problem because it promoted the idea of human “dominion” over creation. -

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES Richard Van Buskirk, Chair; Deke Gundersen The Environmental Studies Department (www.pacificu.edu/as/enviro/) in the College of Arts and Sciences provides students with an education that takes full advantage of Pacific University's liberal arts curriculum. In this program, students and faculty have opportunities to pursue interests that span a wide range of disciplines. In addition to the two full-time faculty members in the department, Environmental Studies offers the expertise of faculty affiliated with the program who are based in the disciplines of biology, chemistry, political science, economics, history, art, sociology, anthropology, philosophy and literature. This results in a wide range of opportunities to investigate environmental problems that cross traditional boundaries. Students in Environmental Studies can choose to apply their knowledge through research opportunities in unique nearby surroundings such as the coniferous forest of the John Blodgett Arboretum, the riparian corridors of the Gales Creek and Tualatin River watersheds, and the 750-acre Fernhill Wetlands. The B Street Permaculture Project (a 15-minute walk from campus) is a learning laboratory for sustainability that directly addresses the human component of environmental problem solving. Regionally, there are many exemplary resources available within a one- to two-hour drive of campus such as the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, Tillamook and Willapa Bays, and the forests of the Coast and Cascade Ranges. The proximity of Pacific University to study sites both wild and human-influenced is one of the main strengths of the Environmental Studies program. The Environmental Studies curriculum includes majors that lead to a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) or a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. -

ENVS 345 - Environmental Ethics - Syllabus Environmental Ethics ENVS 345 Fall Term 2015 – University of Oregon Instructor: Nicolae Morar Syllabus 1. Course Description Why should I really care about the environment? What makes environmental issues genuine moral issues? Imagine yourself in the following situation: you are in a room where you can press a button that says “If you press it, the Grand Canyon will be blown away”. What philosophical/ethical reasons would you have to refrain from pressing that button? Are there any such reasons? Is it morally wrong to destroy something we (humans) deem beautiful? Some philosophers believe that there is no moral value without a valuator. So, what if you were the last person on Earth and you would not care about the Grand Canyon, would it still be wrong to press the button? And even if you were not the last person, would it suffice to appeal to the idea that you might deprive future generations from experiencing such ineffable scenery? Imagine the button says, “it you press it, the Grand Canyon will be blown away, but in doing so, you save x human lives.” How many lives would justify blowing away the Grand Canyon? What if those lives are the lives of some people you will never know/meet with? Does it have to be a human life? What about a non-human animal life? What about an ecosystem? This course will attempt to answer some of the questions above and to conceptualize central notions in environmental ethics. We will focus on defining what it means to have moral standing or to be a (moral) person. -
