The usefulness of random amplified microsatellite polymorphism markers to study the genetic diversity and relationships among cultivars belonging to Prunus salicina and P. domestica and their wild relatives (P. insititia and P. spinosa) was investigated. A total of 226 of 234 bands were polymorphic (96.58%). The 226 random amplified microsatellite polymorphism markers were screened using 15 random amplified polymorphic DNA and inter-simple sequence repeat primers combinations for 54 Tunisian plum accessions. The percentage of polymorphic bands (96.58%), the resolving power of primers values (135.70), and the polymorphic information content demonstrated the efficiency of the primers used in this study. The genetic distances between accessions ranged from 0.18 to 0.79 with a mean of 0.24, suggesting a high level of genetic diversity at the intra- and interspecific levels. March 28, 1997 Vegetation Structure of a Secondary Grassland at a Line Corridor in Fukuchi Mountain System, Northern Kyushu Tohru Manabe1, Kazuaki Naito2 and Nobukazu Nakagoshi3 'Kitakyushu Museum and Institute of Natural History, Nishihonmachi 3, Yahatahigashiku, Kitakyushu 805, Japan 2Department ofAnimal Production, Chugoku National Agricultural Experiment Station, Kawai-Cho, Oda, Shimane 694, Japan 3Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences, Hiroshima University, Higashi-Hiroshima 739, Japan (Received December 5, 1996) Abstract Vegetation structure was studied at a line corridor which has been formed and maintained as fire prevention belt by periodic mowing at the ridge of a mountain system, northern Kyushu. Grassland herbs were dominant, although forest herbs which usually grow on forest floor occurred at the corridor. The grassland at the corridor was identified phytosociologically as Bupleuro-Miscanthetum sinensis belonging to Arundinello-Miscanthion sinensis alliance. The corridor was classified as trough corridor, because its vegetation height was lower than that of the adjacent matrix. The corridor was composed of various kind of tessera which were brought by many types of landscape element at the adjacent matrix, microtopography and surface geology at the corridor. Those tessera were distributed heterogeniously over the corridor. Distribu tion patterns of the plant species within the corridor were also affected by those of the tessera. Thus, this narrow line corridor had the function of habitat for many grassland herbs which are becoming rare. And variety of the tessera brought about variety of landscape structure generated high composition diversity of the plant species at the corridor. Introduction Secondary grasslands, which were one of the main landscape element types (Forman and Godron, 1986), had been maintained by mowing and pasturage under the traditional sustainable land use systems inJapan (Naito and Nakagoshi, 1994).

VOL. 31.No.4 APRIL, 1956 MORTON ARBORETUM JOY MORTON· FOUNDER BULLETIN OF LIS LE, ILLINOIS POPULAR INFORMATION THE ORNAMENTAL PRUNUS, AN APPRAISAL The genus Prunus which includes the Almonds, Apricots, Cherries, Peaches and Plums constitutes one of the most important subdivisions of the Rose (Rosaceae) Family, not only from an economic standpoint but ornamentally as well. And, with the fruit value obvious to all, our interest in this appraisal is largely concerned with the latter point, the group's aesthetic qualifications. Floral effectiveness and ornamental foliage accounts for the popularity of a majority of the species included, with showy fruit, decorative bark, picturesque stature and miscellaneous lesser attractions providing the additional interests. Trees Two very hardy Prunus share the distinction of being the first trees in the Arboretum to leaf out in the spring. These are the closely related flaky barked Amur Cherry, (Prumts Maackii), from Korea and Man churia and the hybrid Meyer Chokecherry (P. Meyeri) with smooth, darker colored bark. Both are low branched round headed trees (to 45 ft.) whose leaf buds responding to the first sign of warmth sometimes break into leaf in late March or early April. The floral display usually does not come until later in the month, when pendulous racemes of small, very fragrant flowers transform the trees into bouquets of white. Earliest bloom is produced by the dainty David's Peach, 11 davidianan, slender branched, willow-like small tree from China, which after a mild winter may open its fragile pink blooms before March is over. Another bud tender, but sturdier appearing tree, is the Ansu Apricot (P.

Therefore, we evaluated the clonal status of 215 des- ignated cultivars using 17 SSR markers. More than half the cultivars were morphologically distinct and had unique genotypes. However, 22 cultivars were found to consist of multiple clones, which probably originate from the chance seedlings, suggesting that their unique characteristics have not been maintained through propagation by grafting alone. We also identified 23 groups consisting of two or more cultivars with identical genotypes. Most members of these groups were putatively synonymously related and morphologically iden- tical. However, some of them were probably derived from bud sport mutants and had distinct morphologies.

The main purpose of this study is to obtain specimens, seeds and living collections with passport data for the potential use. This exploration was the third of our whole research regarding the investigation of the flora of eastern Asia. The expedition was carried out by a team of scientists from T. B. Lee Herbarium, Seoul National University (SNUA), and the Institute of Botany in Beijing (PE). This cooperation insured involvement by both Chinese and Korean experts in all targeted taxonomic groups, and was essential to successful execution of field studies in China. Field survey was carried out two times in July and September, 2004. From our expedition to western Sichuan, we could visited evergreen broad-leaved and deciduous forests mix (1,800 to 2,500 m), subalpine and alpine conifers [2,500 to 3,200 m; its mountain valleys abundant in spruces, firs and pines, form the (somewhat overlogged) major wood resource for Sichuan], alpine shrublands and meadows (3,200 to 4,500 m) and alpine rock vegetation (above 4,500 m).

  • Recommendation of Native Species for the Reforestation of Degraded Land Using Live Staking in Antioquia and Caldas’ Departments (Colombia)
UNIVERSITÀ DEGLI STUDI DI PADOVA Department of Land, Environment Agriculture and Forestry Second Cycle Degree (MSc) in Forest Science Recommendation of native species for the reforestation of degraded land using live staking in Antioquia and Caldas’ Departments (Colombia) Supervisor Prof. Lorenzo Marini Co-supervisor Prof. Jaime Polanía Vorenberg Submitted by Alicia Pardo Moy Student N. 1218558 2019/2020 Summary Although Colombia is one of the countries with the greatest biodiversity in the world, it has many degraded areas due to agricultural and mining practices that have been carried out in recent decades. The high Andean forests are especially vulnerable to this type of soil erosion. The corporate purpose of ‘Reforestadora El Guásimo S.A.S.’ is to use wood from its plantations, but it also follows the parameters of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). For this reason, it carries out reforestation activities and programs and, very particularly, it is interested in carrying out ecological restoration processes in some critical sites. The study area is located between 2000 and 2750 masl and is considered a low Andean humid forest (bmh-MB). The average annual precipitation rate is 2057 mm and the average temperature is around 11 ºC. The soil has a sandy loam texture with low pH, which limits the amount of nutrients it can absorb. FAO (2014) suggests that around 10 genera are enough for a proper restoration. After a bibliographic revision, the genera chosen were Alchornea, Billia, Ficus, Inga, Meriania, Miconia, Ocotea, Protium, Prunus, Psidium, Symplocos, Tibouchina, and Weinmannia. Two inventories from 2013 and 2019, helped to determine different biodiversity indexes to check the survival of different species and to suggest the adequate characteristics of the individuals for a successful vegetative stakes reforestation.
