2 A Message from the Board Chair and the President & CEO

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.” - Dr. Booker T. Washington

Good evening members, friends, and supporters of the Atlanta Business League. Thank you so much for joining us for this historic and memorable evening of celebration. Our theme this year, “Celebrating 85 Years of Achievement,” reflects the League’s commitment to provide economic empowerment and business development opportunities for metro Atlanta’s women and minority communities-- with an emphasis on enterprises owned by African-Americans. Tonight, we highlight and underscore the important role of trailblazing African-American-owned businesses that have invested more than 100 years in our communities, present the Inaugural Maynard H. Jackson Jr. Empowerment Award and take a brief walk down memory lane.

As the South’s oldest and most influential minority business development organization, the Atlanta Business League has much to celebrate tonight, including its rich history of business development, advocacy and the enduring legacy that it builds upon today.

The League has long been a critical ingredient in the growth and development of metropolitan Atlanta. It continues in that vital role today. For some, it represents a rich history of ‘Negro’ business owners whose struggles and success- es paved the way for today’s African-American entrepreneurs. For others, the League serves as an effective training ground and a valuable rung in their personal growth and development. And for many others, it is a supportive and professional venue where relationships are developed and nurtured. In short, the Atlanta Business League is singu- larly unique for each of us; and it remains a vital vehicle and reliable resource for people at various developmental levels and walks of life.

Since its inception, the Atlanta Business League has been and is being piloted by some of Atlanta’s best and bright- est. Men and women alike, have sacrificed time and resources from both their businesses and home life to help grow the organization into the premier African-American business developer and advocate it is today. Tonight, we salute family business owners, community leaders and global icons who are living examples of those pioneers and pacesetters whose investments paid off, then and now, for all of us.

Sincerely,

Milton Jones, Jr. ABL Board Chairman

Leona Barr-Davenport ABL President & CEO

The non-profit provides the opportunity for young men and women to learn the importance of economic empowerment, community development and enrichment; key necessities needed to start, grow and maintain their very own businesses.

Maceo is often sought after to deliver motivational and inspirational messages to aspiring youth, enterprising entre- preneurs, community leaders and church congregants. History of the Atlanta Business League

The Atlanta Business League (ABL) was established in 1933 as an affiliate of the National Business League, founded in 1900 by Dr. Booker T. Washington. The National Business League was committed from its incep- tion to a strong, comprehensive program of self-help and self-sufficiency which encourages civic pride and community re-investment.

The Atlanta Business League was formed on the same premise and principles. Serving the role as minority business developer and advocate, the ABL seeks to provide economic empowerment and business devel- opment opportunities for minorities throughout the metropolitan Atlanta region. The ABL is a strong force for positive growth whose programs and initiatives have fostered business relationships which have translated to hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue and new business start-ups. It serves as one voice for many small businesses, using their collective power to influence the course of events economically, politically and socially. As challenges arise, the ABL continues to resolve them.

39 Remembering Atlanta Business League Members In Memoriam

The Honorable Ivory Lee Young, Jr.

A native of Butler, , Young has served on the Atlanta City Council since January 2002. The district he represented is comprised of several communities on the westside of Atlanta, including English Avenue, Washington Park and Vine City. An avid Atlanta Falcons fan, he helped oversee the completion of the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, also located in District 3.

During his council tenure, Young’s strong leadership and collaborative problem-solving skills resulted in adopting policy with a long-term positive impact on the city. With support from former Mayor ’s administration through the Department of Planning, Young suc- cessfully completed “Westside Revive.” This unprecedented initiative created redevelopment plans for neighborhoods that have not benefited from traditional economic opportunities. (1962-2018) Young’s active role in the redevelopment of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive corridor resulted in more than $65 million for the completion of the Historic Westside Village project that served as a catalyst for continued investments.

He also supported funding of police and fire equipment to enhance public safety through- out his district, including infrastructure improvements and cameras. Young lent his legislative support for the creation of the Atlanta Citizens Review Board and abolished the Disorderly Conduct 6 statute that unfairly profiled citizens in underserved neighborhoods, after the shooting death of 92-year-old Kathryn Johnston by Atlanta Police.

Young earned a Bachelor of Architecture from Hampton University. He played trumpet on The Marching Force. A proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the National Or- ganization of Minority Architects (NOMA), and former Vice-President of the Atlanta Chapter. Young was the son of a retired army sergeant major who served in the Army for 30 years. At one point, the family was stationed in Alaska.

“The different places that he served while in the Army afforded me and my family exposure that I don’t think we would’ve ever had. It also gave me a love for all people,” Young has said about his childhood.

Young grew up wanting to be an architect and was in the industry for more than 30 years. “I really love construction. When I was younger, I spent many summers with my uncles do- ing construction projects. That experience really gave me a love for the built environment and being able to shape things from ideas and concepts,” he said.

At the time of his passing, Young was serving on the Atlanta City Council’s City Utilities and Community Development/Human Services committees as well as the Committee on Coun- cil. During his tenure, he served as a member of most of the council committees including serving as chair of the Zoning Committee.

When asked what message he wanted to share with constituents in his absence, Young said, “Atlanta City Council District 3 is alive and well. We have challenges that we have to overcome in the city… (but) we’re excited about the future.”

The event also recognizes African-American-owned businesses that have been in operation continuously for 25 years or more and holds an induction ceremony to enter them into the ABL Business Hall of Fame.

STUDENT BUSINESS SHADOW PROJECT The ABL provides high school juniors and seniors with hands-on, real-world access to African-American business owners and their companies for the purpose of encouraging them to explore careers in business. The Student-Business Shadow Project (SBSP) provides the students exposure to professionals in corporate America as well as minority business owners and their employees.

ABL CARES The ABL CARES initiative is a coordinated effort to channel the financial and volunteer resources of ABL members and their associates to benefit the Atlanta metro community. Instituted in 2004, its overall purpose is to support organizations that require help meeting the social, educational and welfare needs of the community.

TUESDAY TALKS WITH ABL CEOs The Tuesday Talks with ABL CEOs affords members the opportunity to meet with metro Atlanta CEOs and community leaders in small group settings. The Tuesday Talks are quarterly 90-minute roundtables that are typically held at the office of the host CEO. ABL members register to meet with one of the participating CEOs and there is a maximum of 10 members per session. During the talks, CEOs engage ABL members in a candid exchange of ideas and information.

THE BRIDGE The (ABL) Bridge consists of young entrepreneurs and professionals ages 21 to 40. It connects the existing ABL structure to a new wave of younger entre- preneurs through programming that is focused on their needs. The goal of The Bridge is to be the platform that brings together young professionals and those who have already blazed the trail for a unified exchange of ideas and resources. 41 Atlanta Business League 931 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, NW Atlanta, Georgia 30314 (Office) 404-‐584-‐8126 (Fax) 404-‐584-‐0445
