Distinguishing Dharma and Dharmata by Asanga and Maitreya with a Commentary by Thrangu Rinpoche Geshe Lharampa Translated by Jules Levinsion Asanga in the fourth century meditated on Maitreya for twelve years and then was able to meet the Maitreya Buddha (the next Buddha) directly, who gave him five works including this text. Asanga then went on to found the Mind-only or Chittamatra school of Buddhism. This text, which contains both the root verses of Maitreya and a commentary on these verses by Thrangu Rinpoche, begins by giving the characteristics of dharma which is ordinary phenomena as we perceive it as unenlightened beings. Phenomena is described in detail by giving its characteristics, its constituents or elements, and finally its source which is the mind. Discussed are the eight consciousnesses especially the alaya consciousness and how it creates the appearance of this world. Understanding dharma allows us to understand how we build up a false illusion of this world and this then leads to our problems in samsara. Next, the text discusses dharmata or phenomena as it really is, not as it appears, in detail. In describing this sphere of reality or pure being, the text gives the characteristics of dharmata, where it is located, and the kinds of meditation needed to develop a perception of the true nature of reality. Finally, there is a discussion of how one transforms ordinary dharma into dharmata, i.e. how one reaches awakening or enlightenment. This is discussed in ten famous points and this is actually a guide or a map to how to proceed along the Buddhist path. -

DOI 10.14746/ kse.2019.16.12. The Path of Insight is a spiritual path of Tibetan Buddhism tradition. The fundamental part consists of three elements, such like: preliminary practices, the tranquility meditation and the penetrating insight meditation. However, counted three parts one ought to perceive as aspects of one pro cess aiming to realize of the soteriology purpose. The achievement of the nondual state has its own develop ment process, which consists experience of the nondual state, stabilise it and then development of it. Outline of development process is contained in the Path o Insight and relies on exceeding of subjectiveobjective divisibility. It is perceived as an effect of the ignorance of true nature of the individual. The achievement of the nondual state, that is nature of the mind (tib. sems nyid) constitutes the purpose of the Path of Insight and it is described by conceptsymbol called mahamudra. The following paper is intended to provide an outline of the Path of Insight, as one of the basic meditation practices represented in Tibetan Buddhism. MAHAMUDRA AND THE KAGYU LINEAGE KHENCHEN THRANGU RINPOCHE It has been some years since the Buddhist teachings have spread to the West, and in that time many people have engendered a deep faith and confidence in the teachings of the Buddha. For those with such great faith and confidence, the practice of Mahamudra is very appropriate because Mahamudra is a particularly convenient practice to do, and at the same time it is extremely beneficial. For students following the path of Mahamudra, it will be very helpful to know and understand something about the history of this lineage. Three Lifestyles of Mahamudra Practitioners In terms of the history of Mahamudra practice throughout India and Tibet, and in particular in India, there are the renowned 84 mahasiddhas who were practitioners of Mahamudra. These 84 mahasiddhas, or great accomplished ones, led many types of lifestyles. For example, we can look at Indrabodhi, a great and powerful king of India who had a wealth of enjoyments and pleasures. He was also skilled at cultivating and sustaining his kingdom in a vast way. Even though he exerted himself at cultivating and sustaining his kingdom and enjoyed the many pleasures of a king, along with that, he meditated on Mahamudra. Due to his Mahamudra meditation, he attained great accomplishment. If we look at a second category of practitioner, we can take the example of the great protector Nagarjuna. Nagarjuna was a great scholar and a wise master who was learned in all of the Buddhist reasonings. He had an extremely sharp intellect and a great ability to compose Buddhist texts and treatises. -

Sometimes it feels like our mind is the enemy, full of painful fears, deep traumas, and repetitive thoughts we can’t seem to control. But it can also be our greatest friend, the source of love, wisdom, beauty, and all good qualities. According to Buddhism, transforming the mind of suffering into the mind of joy is the secret of life. -

THE BIOGRAPHIES OF RECHUNGPA This book traces the lifestory of Rechungpa (1084–1161)—the student of the famous teacher Milarepa—using rare and little-known manuscripts, and discovers how the image of both Milarepa and Rechungpa underwent fundamental transformations over a period of over three centuries. The author compares significant episodes in the life of Rechungpa as portrayed in a succession of texts and thus demonstrates the evolution of Rechungpa’s biography. This is the first survey of the surviving literature which includes a detailed analysis of their dates, authorship and interrelationships. It shows how Rechungpa was increasingly portrayed as a rebellious, volatile and difficult pupil, as a lineage from a fellow-pupil prospered to become dominant in Tibet. Peter Alan Roberts is a writer, translator and interpreter.
