Two-time World Champion Evgenia Medvedeva (OAR) is looking to crown her remarkable young career with Olympic gold, but she needs to watch out for teammate Alina Zagitova in particular, who handed her the first defeat in two and a half years at the ISU European Figure Skating Championships in Moscow last month. 15-year-old Zagitova, who also won the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in December, tops the seasons best list with her 238.24 points from Europeans. Medvedeva, 18, who was sidelined by injury and missed the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final and the Russian National Championships, scored a seasons best of 232.86 points at the European Championships. Medvedeva and Zagitova will face stiff competition coming from World silver medalist Kaetlyn Osmond (CAN/seasons best 217.55 points), ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final silver medalist Maria Sotskova (OAR/seasons best 216.28 points) and 2014 Olympic bronze medalist Carolina Kostner (ITA/215.98 points). They also need to watch out for 2015 World silver medalist Satoko Miyahara (JPN), newly minted Four Continents Champion Kaori Sakamoto (JPN) and 2017 World bronze medalist Gabrielle Daleman (CAN). A total of 30 Ladies representing 21 ISU Members have qualified for the Olympic Winter Games and the best placed 24 competitors in the Short Program will qualify for the final Free Skating.     December 4, 2018 Lausanne, Switzerland Top skaters take center stage in Vancouver ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final Preview Following six weeks of exciting competition, the top six Men, Ladies, Pairs and Ice Dance couples of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series 2018/19 will take center stage at the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in Vancouver (CAN) this week. A total of 36 skaters/couples from nine ISU members have qualified during the six events of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series – Skate America in Everett, WA, Skate Canada in Laval, QC, Grand Prix Helsinki (FIN), NHK Trophy in Hiroshima (JPN), Rostelecom Cup in Moscow (RUS) and Internationaux de France in Grenoble. Overview of the competitors Reigning World Champion Nathan Chen (USA) and World silver medalist Shoma Uno (JPN) lead the list of qualifiers in the Men’s after striking gold in their two Grand Prix events. Chen is also the defending ISU Grand Prix Final Champion and Uno the defending silver medalist. Chen scored a season’s best of 280.57 points at Skate America while Uno posted a season’s best of 277.25 points at Skate Canada. Michal Brezina (CZE), who picked up two silver medals on the circuit, returns to the Final for the first time since 2011 (SBt 257.98). Sergei Voronov (RUS) will compete in his third Final (SB 254.28 points). The two newcomers this season are Junhwan Cha (KOR), who is also the first Korean male skater to qualify for the (senior) Grand Prix Final (SB 259.78 points) and Keegan Messing (CAN/SB 265.17 points) who replaces Yuzuru Hanyu (JPN).

The events featured the top six skaters/couples in each category from the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating and the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating series. Skoptcova/Aleshin (RUS) dance off with gold in Junior Ice Dance Russia’s Anastasia Skoptcova/Kirill Aleshin danced off with the gold medal. Christina Carreira/Anthony Ponomarenko (USA) claimed the silver medal and Sofia Polishchuk/Alexander Vakhnov, also from Russia, earned the bronze in what was their debut in the Junior Final. Skoptcova/Aleshin put out a strong Tango program, collecting a level four for their lifts, twizzles and the sin while the serpentine step sequence was rated a level three. The Muscovites achieved a season’s best with 87.74 points for a total of 153.61 points. “For now, we are satisfied with our performance and now we would like to start our preparation for our next competition,” Aleshin commented.
