Position of Mother and I n f a n t ................ 33 vii ABSTRACT Early maternal-infant contact is of extreme impor­ tance in the establishment of a healthy relationship. This contact between mother and infant can be altered by many factors, one of them being culture. The focus of this study was to explore the behaviors of maternal-infant contact in non-English speaking Mexican-American mothers. The subjects for this study were six mother-infant pairs from an inpatient labor and delivery unit at the Health Science Center. These subjects agreed to participate in this research by allowing the researcher to video- arid audiotape the initial maternal-infant interaction within six minutes after the delivery while the mother was still on the delivery table. An observation checklist was developed to measure the various mother, infant, and significant other contact behaviors. Two observers viewed each tape independently to determine reliability of the observations. The inter<- observer reliability coefficient was 88%. The findings re­ vealed that most of the mothers fingertip touch their infants first regardless of what body part they touch. However, this particular group of mothers offered a variety of contact behaviors and did not establish an "orderly and predictable" pattern of behavior. viii CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION It has long been known that babies require mothering, touching, cuddling, and loving attention if they are to thrive. This close contact may be as important to the mother's well-being as to the child's. There are certain processes that a mother and her newborn go through during the first few hours and days of life. These processes may be the key to how well the mother will respond to her infant later in their lives and how well the'infant will in turn respond to his mother (Clark and Affonso 1976b). Inter­ action between a mother and her infant during the first few weeks is significant (Rubin 1963; Barnett et al. 1970; Salk 1970; Klaus et al. 1970; Klaus et al. 1972; Klaus, Trause, and Kennell 1975). Delay in initiation of the mother- infant relationship, especially within the first 24 hours after birth, can create an environment in which a maladap­ tive parent-child relationship can develop. Such an en­ vironment can affect both infant's and parent's future growth and development and so can ultimately affect our society. Our goal is to prevent the creation of a maladap­ tive environment and send a confident, contented mother home with a thriving child. In order to attain our goal of 1 2 preventing a maladaptive environment, it is important for the nurse to understand maternal attachment. Maternal attachment can be defined as a unique relationship between a mother and her infant that is specific and endures through time (Klaus and Kennell 1976). Although it is difficult to define this enduring relation­ ship operationally, maternal attachment is evaluated in terms of attachment behaviors such as fondling, gazing, kissing, holding close,' and looking en face. However, these behaviors correspond to behaviors that might be called "affectionate" in contemporary Western society and do not necessarily have equal importance in other cultures (Goldberg 1972). Variations and attitudes in behaviors which may result from cultural influences need to be care­ fully understood. Culture is significant because it defines the meaning of the experience and designates appropriate behavior for reacting to and coping with events (Affonso, in Clark and Affonso 1976a). In the experience of child­ birth, culture definitely plays an important role. Childbirth is an emotional and immeasurably complex aspect of existence, and the experience means a great deal to the individuals involved, both at the time itself and later (Macfarlane 1977). Influences on the outcome.of a pregnancy and delivery begin at the time of a mother's own conception. The genes that a mother inherits from her parents, her own development inside of the uterus with all 3 its complex changes, the hazards of her own delivery, her social and biological experiences during infancy,

    ‘A Nine-Month Head-Start’: The Maternal Bond and Surrogacy Katharine Dow University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK This article considers the significance of maternal bonding in people’s perceptions of the ethics of surrogacy. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Scotland with people who do not have personal experience of surrogacy, it describes how they used this ‘natural’ concept to make claims about the ethics of surrogacy and compares these claims with their personal experiences of maternal bonding. Interviewees located the maternal bond in the pregnant woman’s body, which means that mothers have a ‘nine-month head-start’ in bonding with their children. While this valorises it, it also reproduces normative expectations about the nature and ethic of motherhood. While mothers are expected to feel compelled to nurture and care for their child, surrogate mothers are supposed to resist bonding with the children they carry. This article explores how interviewees drew on the polysemous nature of the maternal bond to make nuanced claims about motherhood, bonding and the ethics of surrogacy. While her daughter was at nursery school, we talked for a couple of hours – about surrogacy, but also about Erin’s personal experience of motherhood, which had come somewhat unexpectedly as she had been told that she was unlikely to conceive a child after sustaining serious abdominal injuries in a car accident as a teenager.

Price ABSTRACT Prenatal stressors have been reported to affect postnatal cognitive, metabolic, reproductive and immune functions. This study examined immune indices and function in Brahman calves prenatally stressed by transportation of their dams on d 60, 80, 100, 120 and 140 ± 5 d of gestation. Based on assessment of cow’s temperament and their reactions to repeated transportation it was evident that temperamental cows displayed greater pre-transport cortisol (P < 0.0001) and glucose (P < 0.03) concentrations, and habituated slower to the stressor compared to cows of calm and intermediate temperament. Serum concentration of cortisol at birth was greater (P < 0.03) in prenatally stressed versus control calves. Total and differential white blood cell counts and serum cortisol concentration in calves from birth through the age of weaning were determined. We identified a sexual dimorphism in neutrophil cell counts at birth (P = 0.0506) and cortisol concentration (P < 0.02) beginning at 14 d of age, with females having greater amounts of both. Whether weaning stress differentially affected cell counts, cortisol concentrations and neutrophil function of prenatally stressed and control male calves was examined.

To fulfill their dream, the Calverts turned to a non-coital reproductive technology known as gestational surrogacy.1 They contracted with a co-worker of Cris- pina's, Anna Johnson, to gestate their genetic fetus. Mark provided the sperm, Crispina provided the egg, and Anna provided the womb. Their agreement required that, after delivery, Anna would surrender the child to the Calverts. However, during the course of her pregnancy, Anna Johnson changed her mind and decided she could not part with the child developing within her. The bill generated modest media attention, but little controversy;2 it passed unanimously in both houses of the legislature and was signed into law by the governor.'
