With interruptions due to the 2nd World War and the foot and mouth outbreaks, 98 years later we once again find ourselves in the Peak District looking forwards to another challenging event. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us this year, as it has not always done so in the past. As in many recent years we have yet again been favoured with a full entry of 160 riders all eager to have a go at winning one of our famous trophies, which hopefully you will see on display at the start area this year. Over the years we have seen many names famous in the trials world competing for these prestigious and beautiful trophies. Just to mention the Bemrose Trophy itself, a certain Mr SH Miller won it in 1959, 1961, 64, 65 and 67! Gordon Jackson won it in 1955 and 1957. And our famous local “lad” Mick Andrews won it in 1962, 69, 74, 75, 76, 80 and 1981, what a span of years ! In the start area you will also find other historic memorabilia including a blue folder which lists the winners of all our trophies up until the 80th occasion the event was run. (Yes, we need to bring it up to date!) We are always interested in adding to our collection of Bemrose related memorabilia, so if you have anything you could copy or photograph please let us know. The route this year follows the course which has become traditional over the past few years, including famous old favourites such as Kid Tor, Etches, Booth Edge, Manor Steps and Hawks Nest. Unfortunately we are not able to use Staden this year, but we do have the new groups first used last year at Dowell and Hollins Hill. We are constantly looking to add new groups and hopefully next year we will be adding something very special, but you will just have to wait and see!! As always please respect the countryside, close all gates and slow down for walkers and horse riders. Please only re-fuel at the start area and the designated point near Hawks Nest. Well, I hope all riders, spectators and officials have a truly enjoyable day and come to see us again next year, next stop 100 years !! Secretary of the Meeting: Kev Stannard WASHGATES - IMPORTANT As many of you will know, the Washgates track has a Traffic Restriction Order (TRO) in force on it: the Bemrose has special exemption to use it today from the Peak District National Park Authority. That exemption is subject to certain conditions that must be followed or we will potentially lose that permission for the future, permission which was hard fought for. The conditions relate to potential threats to the environment (There shall be no discharge of oil or petrol or refuelling within 15m of the watercourse) and to bio-diversity (Bikes, boots and riding gear shall be clean of mud and debris). So please be careful, especially there! Also have a look at http://www.nonnativespecies.org/checkcleandry/biosecurity-for-everyone.cfm FINAL INSTRUCTIONS ALL RIDERS MUST SIGN ON AT THE START AND SIGN OFF AT THE END OF THE TRIAL Refreshments will be available at the Start / Finish Area ROUTE The start/finish area will be at Haslin Farm (OS map reference 119/SK 066 692 GB grid). Riders will start in numerical order pairs at one-minute intervals from 9:00am. Time penalties as NSC. Competitors will be covered by the ACU blanket insurance scheme. The overall route length is approximately 30 miles and the time limit is 7 hours. All competitors must hand back their riding number at the finish. SCORING This is a STOP ALLOWED trial. Marks will be lost as follows: 0 Clean 1 Footing once 2 Footing twice 3 Footing more than twice 5 Failure 5 When requested by a rider rather than attempt the section 10 Not attempting a section when called upon by an official (in addition to any marks subsequently lost in that section) 10 For missing a section SECTION MARKING The harder/Bemrose route will use Orange bibs and follow red/right and blue/left section markers. The easier route will use White bibs and will follow their alternative route shown by yellow/left and white/right markers. The 50/50 route will use Green bibs and follow the Easy route unless the section is marked with a 50/50 sign, in which case they do the harder route in that section. ACCESS AND OTHER USERS This event is routed along or across public rights of way. Competitors must exercise caution and reduce speed accordingly near other path users. Be especially careful near horses. Obey all signs and close all gates. SLOW DOWN, STOP AND SWITCH OFF YOUR ENGINE, IF NECESSARY Please do not re-visit sections after the trial. Access is allowed for the event only and visits by unauthorised riders can seriously endanger the prospects of using these areas in future, especially in the Peak District National Park.
